Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We actually went to the one in Lahaina but Trip Advisor does not have a listing for it.
This is a great place to buy books while in Maui. They have a comprehensive selection of new, used and "ex library" books covering all topics including local history, cooking and nature. The staff are volunteers and very helpful. Good value and your purchase helps the local library!

This is such a wonderful idea for schools and bookstores. Kids always need books! This is perfect for all the needy kids who don’t have a lot of fun or experience. Incredible place, incredible staff. P.S. most books are only fifty cents!!

This used book store would never be found without hand painted signs leading you behind a school at the end of the road. There are over a hundred free books on the porch and thousands inside the store. Most books are fifty cents by I also saw a few Thomas Friedman books which were $7.00. The very helpful staff mentioned there are other locations but this one is unique and interesting.

The people who run this non-profit organization are well organized, friendly, happy, and just plain nice! I am not sure if they know how much they are appreciated by all of us who are readers of the printed page! They now have bookstores near Sears, in Lahaina, and this most amazing of all here in Pu'unene. Come on over - you'll be glad that you did!

If you're booking for reading material for the beach, definitely visit this store because they have a great selection of everything. Their selection of Hawaiian books is really good!

We saw a review for the Friends of Maui used bookstore and planned to find it when visiting. We went to the store in the mall and found some wonderful bargain books to enjoy on our trip. They had a wonderful selection and the staff was very friendly.

We landed in Maui's Kahului Airport around 9am. After hiring our car this was our first stop! We followed the directions on the FOTL website through the sugar mill and towards the school and with only one wrong turn reached book heaven. The free books (yep - **FREE**) outside kept us occupied while we waited for the main store to open, and I already suspected I hadn't left enough room in my luggage. Then inside to hunt around where nearly everything is 25c while some are labelled for $1 or $2 if they're more desirable. I could have stayed all day. They dust your book purchases for you (lets face it, its a warehouse in the middle of dusty cane fields) and have wet wipes for dirty fingers - just bring your asthma puffer if you're worried! While there we saw locals dropping in huge piles of books so there will always be more to trawl through.

Positives: cheap and free books; driving through an area you wouldn't usually get to see (especially if you're a visitor); getting to chat to local fellow bibliophiles; books to read on holidays; a Hawaiiana section for much less than you'll pay anywhere else; supporting the Friends of the Library; and did I mention free books :-).

Negatives: None, unless you don't have enough luggage space in which case just drop back and re-donate the books when you drive back to the airport.

Friends of the Library - please open a branch in Brisbane Australia? Pretty Please??

I took my grandkids here for spring break--the books are affordable, and the selection is very good. The volunteer was very friendly and helpful. The books are only $.25 each, but still they gave my 2 youngest grandkids one free book each! Thank you Maui Friends of the Library--I love seeing my grandkids learn to love reading:-). I also loved showing them part of "old Hawaii".

They had books for the very young (board books) and for every age group.
Warning--part of the road is dirt, with lots of potholes--I wouldn't try it on a day with heavy rain. But on a dry day, you can take it easy and drive around the potholes--there is very light traffic there.

This was quite an experience! The branch we went to is located not far from the Sugar factory, we found it by following some signs from the Alex Baldwin Sugar Museum. It's fairly small, but packed to the brim with books, mostly selling for 25 cents. We went with our 20 month old, and they gave him a free kids book with our purchase. Mixture of books you'd never read, even for 25 cents, and some than you might consider reading.

This place is run by volunteers, and all the money raised goes towards the local school.

Although I did not head to the Puunene branch of this store, I was able to check out the one in Queen K centre in Kahalui as well as the one in Lahaina. Super cheap books, an excellent selection, as well as friendly staff. Oh, and all the staff are volunteers. How cool is that? I'm stoked.
