About
The Slack Key Show has been perpetuating the art of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar for the past 20 years. It takes place every Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the Napili Kai Beach Resortʻs open air pavilion. The resort is located on the upper westside of Maui. Grammy Award winning slack-key guitarist master, George Kahumoku Jr., is the musical host. He often showcases a young protegé. Shows feature renowned Hawaiian musicians as guest artists and everyone shares traditional Hawaiian music with you. Storytelling about the songs reveals elements of Hawaiian life and culture. All in all, the show is an entertaining way to experience authentic Hawaiian music and culture.

We loved this show and were glad they had it. So many shows are still not open. We wore masks and the chairs were paired up, then had appropriate distance between them. We had the opportunity to purchase a drink at the adjacent restaurant, and the Mai Tais were delicious. The show was wonderful. We loved George and all of the other artists. All had beautiful voices as well as playing an instrument. A lovely lady also did a pretty hula. The only thing preventing us from giving this five stars was that we expected the show to go from 5:30-7:30, and we were out by about 6:45, so it was shorter than was advertised, which then threw off our dinner reservation, etc.

If you love acoustic music you need to go see this show. Traditional authentic and moving music and stories about the music. We were even treated to some hula which was an unexpected surprise that brought me to tears. I will be coming back on every trip to Maui.

Attended this show last Wednesday evening. Performers were amazing and very friendly. Not only happy and up beat, but explained the culture behind each song and the instruments used. I would highly recommend attending this and any other performance by these musicians.

Enjoyed a taste of real Hawaiian slack key guitar in a smaller open air venue (seating about 130). Worth the price. The host plays and sings very well and often invites other excellent local artists. Located at the Napili Kai Beach Resort.

These shows are terrific fun- - a hit of real home-grown Hawaiian music by amazing musicians! It's a must each trip to Maui. Uncle George Kahumoku and his wonderful guests never fail to put on a great show. And the venue is on Napili Bay, one of the best beaches on Maui. Arrive early and have a swim before the show!

This is a long standing weekly event highlighting traditional and contemporary Hawaiian slack key music. The performers are local, highly acclaimed and very talented musicians. If you enjoy music in the slack key style, if you want to learn more about Hawaiian culture, attending this show is a no brainer. It is rare treat to see so much virtuosity on stage, in such an intimate and welcoming setting. Do not hesitate to attend!

The title says it all. While the individual artists were excellent, the post intermission jam was outstanding. If fact it was the best part of the show. Many of those in attendance were repeat guests and were extremely friendly, sharing their prior experiences, as well providing sites to see.

The show consists of 5 musicians playing string instruments (2 ukuleles, 2 six string and 1 twelve string guitars). Occasionally there's a guest performer - on this visit it was brotha noland from the big island. The show started with cohost peter deaquino on ukelele for about 30 minutes followed by george kahumaku on slack key for about 30 minutes. Then brotha noland for about 30 minutes and finally those 3 were joined on stage with 2 other regulars and they played together to wrap up the show. Most of the songs were sung in Hawaiian and several were accompanied by hula from a lovely Hawaiian lady who has performed at the merrie monarch festival. The hula dances were excellent as were all of the musicians.
The venue is intimate - there's maybe 10-15 rows of 12 chairs. There's really not a bad seat. If you're interested in experiencing real Hawaiian culture and music, this show is highly recommended.

George was not there the night we attended as he was on tour. We’ve heard him before on a tour and the musician , Led K., who played tonight was his equal! Peter who “ hosted”the show was a great musician and wonderful story teller. We had already been in Hawaii for almost a month and this was one of the highlights!
