About
NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Well, this probably sounds stupid but it was all TREES! And quite boring trees at that- the most excitement was the fact we saw a papaya tree with some small fruits on - and the fact my companion had a lizard run up his leg (a small one- but made us laugh none the less) there was no exotic flowers ti look at , nothing that was remotely an exciting moment - it was tree after tree ….. great….

I was hosting 15 guests coming here to Hawaii and booked the self guided tour 6 weeks in advance. We rented two vehicles for transport to the gardens for that day. Three days in advance I got a call saying they cancelled our tour. Sadly a garden employee had died and they decided to close the garden for his service. They would not accommodate us the next day which was our only other available day. I live in Hawaii and understand how you honor Ohana when they pass. But there were certainly ways to do that and maintain your responsibility to other people. If you call yourself "National Tropical Garden" you do have that responsibility. I would not trust another booking with these people. I am very embarrassed for our Hawaii and its image.

That is quite extraordinary! A few hours exploring a couple of private gardens. Stunning views along the way with plenty of explanations along the way by the knowledgeable driver/guide. Plenty of amazing exotic trees, flowers and fruits. And you get to see a few movie locations, taste some fruits and nuts, explore the local history and traditions,... Not physically demanding as you are brought to both locations in a compact bus.

2 hours sounds like a long time to walk around, but it flew by for us! They had a ton of different variants of plants with historical timelines of them. The "Spice of Life" trail is in development and we are excited to head back when it's completed! The other walkthrough of historical plants was really interesting, it showed the types of plants that would be growing 400 million years ago - today. (The tour guide was also really knowledgeable about the history of the gardens and gave an excellent presentation as we drove to the site)

We toured both of the major gardens with Sam who has lived on the property for many years. He is very knowledgeable since he has grown up with his family on the property. There’s a lot of history and he is very knowledgeable about the plants and history of the land. We would definitely recommend taking the “best of both worlds” tour which includes two of the major gardens.

The garden is really beautiful; the walking paths are smooth. Tours of the garden are a couple of hours. We didn’t complete all the walks, the reading and the savoring of the view. Could have easily spent another hour or 2. The themes are well done. We really benefitted from arriving early and reading the garden pamphlet. A person might benefit from bringing a paper fan for the warm afternoon ride down the hill.

A worthwhile 2 hour self guided tour of Kauai’s native and non native flora on easy to follow trails. Take sunscreen, bug spray and water. I wished more of the plants and trees were identified by signage or on the map/guide. Also expected to see a lot of different flowering plants but did not. Van driver was knowledgeable and energetic and price was reasonable.

Good tours covering a lot of interesting plants. Many of them are stunning. The tour guide Sam provided some Hawaii history and stories along the way.

McBryde is a sister garden to the next-door Allerton Garden. Allerton only has guided tours, McBryde has only self-guided tours - which was why my family chose McBryde.

The shared parking lot for the 2 gardens was close to full for our mid-morning tour. A 15-minute bus ride transports the customers from parking lot to the actual garden (leaves and returns every hour). A docent greets the bus in the garden ang gives a short general overview - then one is on one's own to explore.

My family (with 3 pretty knowledgable gardners in the group) took a leisurely 2.5 hour stroll through the 200 acres of gardens. The plants are not well signed (which was a disapointment), and the 7 or 8 designated trails are really just different parts of a long pretty loop trail. All that said, it's a very serene way to spend 3-hours. Yes, I have seen more specacular gardens in my travels and I think the $30 per adult was a bit pricey for a self-guided tour, but overall our family enjoyed the entire time in the garden (even although it rained). Considerable native bird life added to the enjoyment. Two members of our 11-person group vote the garden the best event of our 9-day stay on Kauai (and we saw pretty well all of Kaui's sights!)

My wife and I went on the waterfall tour. The guide was knowledgable, with a great sense of humour. Lots of stories to tell about local history, and some very beautiful views, including the waterfall.
