Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

That trail is a rather short one, about an hour one way, but offers a very good view to Hanalei and Hanalei Beach. It's steep and slippery but the viewpoint to Hanalei is worth it. From that viewpoint is another section to the end mostly through the forest but the view to a valley at the end is not worth it.

It started out a little muddy, but only for the first 5 minutes. It's an out an back hike, we didn't get to the second overlook, but the first overlook was awe-inspiring. It was steep in spots and would have been difficult if wet, but it was pretty dry the day we went.

We found this trail not long after a rain, which is certainly common on Kauai's North Shore, and we decided to give it a try. The trailhead is located on Ohiki Road just out of Hanalei, with a small parking area on the left side of the road. Ohiki Road is just off the Iron Bridge near Hanalei Town. Okolehao Trail is steep at the start, and we would suggest bug repellant, because we went through very thick jungle as we worked uphill. The trail is about 2.5 miles long and climbs to just above 1,200 feet. When you get near the top you will have views of Hanalei Bay and the Hanalei Valley, both of which make the climb worthwhile. The trail was muddy and a little slick, so a walking stick or trekking poles would be good. Your 5-mile round trip should take about 2 hours or a little more. ENJOY!

Lovely hike, although can be VERY slippery after rain - even with the netting, with stretches of slow and steady hiking and short bursts of steeper, rocky climbing. The view at the 1 3/4 mile mark is worth the effort. Go further for a more challenging, narrow trail + ropes, hike. It's about an hour to 90 minutes to the lookout and about 30 minutes to get down. Be sure and get off the trail before dark as it's a little tricky to find your way out in the dark (and lots of mosquitos!).

We only went to the pine trees -- first stop, but this is a beautiful trail and has lovely view of the Hanalei valley and taro fields from a different perspective. You also get to see many of Hawaii's cool birds on the drive to the trail because it is in a wildlife preserve. Very slippery if it is muddy so be sure to pick up one of the walking sticks at the trail head to help guide you.

The trail has a pretty steep incline, but totally doable if you hike often. The first half of the trail is like a smooth dirt road, the second half is rougher terrain with lots of rocks and tree roots. About half way up you get to the first overlook at the large telephone pole. At the top there are a couple benches with a beautiful view of the bay. You can keep going past this to the start of the Hihimanu (Manta Ray) trail, which is extremely tough with ropes required to climb, etc. Going down was actually harder and hard on the knees/feet because of the steep slope. Plan 2-3 hours depending on pace. Fairly shaded. Don't do this trail after it has rained recently or if it looks like it is going to rain while you are up there.

We did this hike with our three kids. They are 13, 11, and 8. It was steep, muddy, and slippery but manageable. It was my favorite hike that we did in Kauai. The views were so beautiful and it was a wonderful workout. At the end of the hike, we rinsed off all the mud in the creek at the trail head.

This trail doesn't only offer amazing views, but it is probably the most fun hike to do. For many, stopping at about 1.25 miles (at the green bench) is all they will do, and in that case the hike is merely okay. But for those who are up for it, continuing on will be a lot of fun. After the bench, the ridge goes downward for a bit before sharply turning upward Much of the trail you need to use the ropes that are there to climb up the near vertical step. It's a whole lot of fun, and the views of the Hanalei River valley and Hanalei bay are amazing. It can be a bit dangerous, especially if it is muddy, but this is my favorite hike on the island, not only because of the great views, but also just how much fun it is to climb up. I definitely recommend this one. Some people it will take all day, I've been able to go to the top and back in a few hours. Bring water, food, and you'll want to make sure you can have both hands free.

The hike to the benches and view of Hanalei Bay is very do-able, though plan for mud. A walking stick would be helpful. The view is beautiful! Also note that you can keep hiking beyond the benches, but then be prepared because you will be on the Hihimanu Trail which has descriptions of being death-defying with 37 ropes to climb to another peak. There is parking at the trailhead, which was very helpful, and it's very close to Hanalei where you can pick up JoJo's Shave Ice for a nice cool treat after the hike or Chicken in a Barrel for something more substantial.

Steep hike and incredibly muddy and slippery. Lots of places where you need to hold trees to keep balance. I would not do this without hiking poles. The views at the top are not that much better than those you get 1/3 of the way up; not sure it was worth the effort in all honesty. Had more fun birdwatching along the road to the trailhead, as it runs along a bird sanctuary.

Has anyone hiked this trail after the April flood? If so, what trail map / directions did you use? I am concerned that any pre-flood map / directions may no longer be applicable if the flood damaged any marked trails. Mahalo.

Yes was just there and did this hike. Clearly visible parking lot with a small bridge with a sign on it marking the trail head. Very steep and muddy, but a very fun hike. My wife and I are pushing 50 and not in great shape but hike a couple times a month. Our son is 14 and rarely hikes. We all made the 4 mile out and back. The views are stunning and the hike was challenging at times and yes mosquitoes are heavy.
