A nice spot to visit on our way to downtown Hilo. It is a short stop. We spent about 30 minutes on site.I loved the story by the native Hawaiians about the waterfall. I won't spoil it. Come and read it yourself:)

What a wonder! Incredible falls that are easily accessible (short walk from parking lot) and majestic! Absolutely worth the stop off if in Hilo area.

Small but pretty waterfall very close to downtown Hilo. Arrived around 9:30am in hopes to catch a rainbow. Waited until after 10am, saw a tiny start of a rainbow. Parking lot had plenty of open spots. Not much else to do or see here, so it is a quick stop.

Beautiful falls and great vantage point. Would love to get in our get closer but I respect how dangerous the falls and water are. Free to see, easy in/out off the road.

This waterfall is easy to find, just outside of Hilo and worth the trip. The parking area is small. I read about issues with people breaking into cars but we did have any problem.

This is a very relaxing site with easy access. We stood quietly and simply enjoyed the view and the roar of the water. There is no charge for parking and no charge for entering the falls area.

The falls are nice, we took a video to capture the sound as well. It is a 5-10 minute stop. Also suggest you go to Boiling Pots as long as you are here, just 5 minutes up the road.
Rainbow Falls is very similar to Akaka Falls. The surrounding tropical vegetation and nature walk/paved pathway through forest is what makes Akaka more interesting, but they are now charging BOTH to park and to go into Akaka Falls State Park. Given this, if you can get your "tropical foliage pathways walking" somewhere else, Rainbow Falls makes a nice free substitute.
If you are only in Hilo short time, or in the surrounding area, and wondering "should I spend my lmited time going to see Rainbow Falls?" - for me, having seen much of the area and only now on my perhaps 5th trip finding time to get here, I would answer, absolutely NOT to go to Rainbow Falls until you have run out of anything else in Hilo or nearby that you would want to do.
