Gunung Gede or Mount Gede Pangrango is a nice spot to visit. Many local people climb for weekend, but tourists do on weekdays. It is because of the lower price. For this beautiful spot, however, the government must enforce strict laws for visitors who litter. This does not seem to be so much observed by local visitors. I often find plastic bottle laid on grass or in the bank of rivers, and I often listened to the stories of tourists who feel sad to know this condition.

Gede-Pangrango Volcanoes is a twin volcanoes which administratively located in 3 regions, namely Bogor Regency, Cianjur Regency and Sukabumi Regency, West Java Province as the part of hundreds volcano exists in Indonesia ring of fire lines which formed million years ago by the collision of two major plates called Eurasian and Indo-Australian. Currently, Gede is a still active volcano, Pangrango has become a dormant volcano. The icon of these volcanoes lies on their ultimately beautiful landscape of wide square called Suryakencana for Gede dan Mandalawangi for Pangrango which full of Edelweiss Flower / "Anaphalis Javanica".
In the Ancient Sundanese Kingdom era, Gede-Pangrango are considered to be a sacred place to the Sundanese as they were related with the legend of Sundanese land. Sundanese as brother of Javanese & Balinese too has the same beliefs that mountains are called to be the place where the spirit of their ancestors reside and thus it has to be worshipped. The famous man called Bujangga Manik from Sundanese Kingdom who once had journey across Java-Bali island mention that these twin volcanoes as "Bukit Ageung, Hulu Wano Na Pakuan" or in Sundanese has meaning of "Mighty Mount, the Highest Peak in the Land of Pakuan".
In the Dutch colonisation era, the Dutch East Indies government set the area around Gede-Pangrango to fulfill both their economical and environmental interests. The economical interest can be shown of how they designated most of the fertile lands surrounding it to become agricultural and plantation which now has developed reach the area of Ciawi and Cikopo. The environmental can be shown of how they designated the area around Cibodas-Cimungkad to become the first center of conservation area and botanical research in Indonesia by establishing Botanical Garden and setting Natural Reserve.
In the Indonesian independency era, the Indonesian government then continue the preservation effort of the area around Gede-Pangrango by setting Gede-Pangrango Biosphere Reserve and Gede-Pangrango National Park which then nobled as the oldest biosphere reserve and national park in Indonesia.
About hiking Gede-Pangrango Volcanoes, the peak of Pangrango is 3019 MASL and the peak of Gede lies is 2958 MASL, which can be accessed from 3 common hiking-routes namely Cibodas or Ciputri in Cianjur Regency and via Selabintana in Sukabumi Regency. The hiking-time rate from Cibodas or Ciputri range from 5-7 hours while from Selabintana range from 10-14 hours depending on our pace.

The national park is very beautiful and i entered from the Sukabumi side. If you would like to climb Gunung Gede be warned that foreigners must pay 200,000rp for a permit and Indonesians just 2,500rp. On top of this the guides fee is 350,000 per day and camping gear can be rented for an astronomical fee of 200,000rp per night. If you would like to climb it is possible to register and go without a guide as the path is very easy to follow yet you may well be stopped and asked a lot of questions before you head up. There are some beautiful waterfalls in the park and also a lot of places to camp. If you climb Gede then you can find water along the way but just bring one or 2 just in case.

We (male 24 and famale 25) decided to hike the gunung gede from cipodas. We wanted to start at 1 a.m. to see the sun rise at half past 5 a.m. and then walk back down in the morning. Normally you have to pay around 30 dollers to get in the national park and hike the mountain. There are two ways you can pay less:
1. you say you just want to see the waterfalls so you pay less
2. you go there in the evening or in the night when nobody is at the entrance
As I said we started in chipodas and a friend drove us to the entrance. There we started to walk up the vulcano. You do not need a guide because there is just one way, you can not get lost. And here again as in all national parks i have visited in Indonesia, everywere is trash and it is very dirty. The walk up is really long and sometimes steep. The sunrise was beautiful but nothing really special. The view from the top is amazing. We ate some sandwiches up there and took a short break. Then back down again. The way down is as long as the way up and you have to be in a good health condition (if you want to do it in one day). You can also do half the way, there is a camping place, and do the rest on the 2nd day. On the way down we took a break at the hot springs. It was beautiful to hold your hurting legs in to the 40 degree hot water. We arrived back down at 11 a.m. The next day we had massive muscle soreness.

a best mountain to hike near Jakarta (bogor area) with peak 3600 mdpl. and the best is the track is easy to climb and friendly. (hardly you will get lost) all the way to the peak and down. Starts near Safari puncak, a hike of non stop walk up will take around 5 - 7 hours.
you can then go to another mountain (pangrango) or go down to the savannah surya kencana.
there are sellers for food (local coconut rice or cup noodle) and water. still recomend to bring your own.
one last thing, please do not pick the edelweis...

Gunung Gede is a mountain in West Java that has a very high attraction for the hikers on the island of Java. Mount Gede has three official gates, namely National Gede-Pangrango Park (Cibodas) Halimun-Gede National Park (Sukabumi), & Gunung Putri (Cipanas). This time I will review through Cibodas. Normally trip to cibodas approximately 3 hours from Jakarta if you were not got the traffic jammed. If you are from Jakarta city, you can use public transportation to Bogor city (bus). From Bogor, you can continue the journey to Cianjur using a small vehicle, a colt or angkot, until Cibodas intersection. From there you can continue using the angkot to the gate or basecamp or PHPA Cibodas office to take care of the permits. Please note, if you want to hike Mount Gede you have to take care of the permit 3 days earlier & if you have never climbed before, it is advisable to use the services of a guide or porter to anticipate the worst, although actually the signs on this route is quite clear. Gunung Gede has beautiful scenery at its peak, duration for beginners approximately 10 hours. So prepare yourself as well as you can to enjoy the hike. The water source is quite abundant on this route, so there is no need to worry about the lack of water.
Have a safe hike & keep our earth clean.

A 'must visit' attraction if you are in the Puncak area is the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park. It is reached by traveling to Cibodas which you can easily do off the main road in Puncak using the small mini buses and the fare is not expensive. The grounds of the park are extensive and beautiful, and the Waterfalls are a reasonable gentle 3 kilometre walk. For the more adventurous, depending on the amount of time you have, it is even possible to climb the volcano. Do remember to wear sensible shoes for walking as some of the steps can be slippery especially if it has rained.

You may want to follow the Lonely Planet instructions, but which one is easier, going up or coming down? With these kind of mountains, coming down. So, you may want to start from a place called Putri . This is the other end of the track and it takes you straight to the Meadow below the summit. Meadow is a way better place for camping than the noisy Kandang Badak, a place for picnickers.
* To Putri you can get by yellow angkot - learn to use them in Indonesia, but get out of angkot with the last local passenger if you don't want to pay 100.000 rupiah instead of 10-20.000.
For a cigarette, farmers will show you the right track ahead from Putri. The path is steep, but not as crazy and with opened rocks as from Cibodas. To see the sunrise, you have to climb in the dark anyway. To reach the beautiful Meadow to set up your tent and primus, it takes about 7,5 h at max.
So, the next day will be for pleasure - 1h to the summit of Gede, sunrise, and coming down 1,5 h. And after the all the attractions: waterfall, air panas (waterfall from hot springs), and the green lake Telaga Biru. Hati hati!

I went here with my friends and I did really enjoy this national park. In my opinion, it's much bigger and natural than Bogor Botanical gardens, since it's located near the mountain and far from the city.

Gede - Pangrango are two mountains located in three different districts in West Java. Gede Pangrango is one of the two famous national parks in the regional Bogor-Sukabumi-Cianjur. The other one is National Park of Halimun - Salak.
If you love to climbing the mountain, you will find a good experience when try to climbing this Gede - Pangrango. But, I suggest that you climb only Gede Mountain. You can go to the Cibodas gate and very recommended to walk at the afternoon in order to get in the top of the mountain and feel the great experience to face the sunrise there.
After enjoying sunrise, you can go to the mountain valley and by 9 o'clock, you can reach the best and greatest flower fields of Surya Kancana untill 12 o'clock and get praying (for moslem) and have a wonderful worship activity. Then by 1 pm, you better going back and reach the gate of Puteri.
Have a nice trip and climb.

Are there any recommendations for the best local travel company that can arrange privately specifically for foreign nationals to climb in 1 day or go camping to explore these two mountains, Gede and Panggrango?
Written 17 July 2023
Check out the Java Private Tour, you can googling, they are part of a gede pangrango national park, and are highly recommended by embassies and professional climbers, and their service is specifically for foreign nationals, I just did a tour session today with them, the service very good, and I highly recommend it

How challenging is the climb compared to Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen in Surabaya?
Written 4 November 2019
Hi Hello,
If compared, of course, the Gede Pangrango Mountain will be very more challenging from Bromo & Ijen, if your physical condition is good enough, you also can try another mountain in Bogor, which is more challenging too, one of the mountains in Bogor, namely Mount Salak. Have a good adventure and protect Indonesia's nature well. Best Regards & Friendship Java Private Tour

Hello,
I plan to do a solo hike on the first week of November. Is it possible to just go there and apply for a permit on the spot or do I need to apply in advance (and how)?
Thanks
