About
Founded in 1972 by the Jackson County Historical Society, the museum tells the stories of Jackson County, WV’s history with objects, photographs, and archives. The museum is located in the former Lock 22 powerhouse in Riverside Park. It is joined by the Sayre Log Cabin, which was moved to the park from Cow Run Road (near Cottageville) in 1982. Set up in the manner of a late 18th century homestead, the Cabin depicts the everyday lives of the Sayre family and other early pioneer families of Jackson County. In 2020, the Historical Society gave the museum and collection to the City of Ravenswood to carry on its mission of preserving and promoting county history.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a wonderful museum located in the 1918 powerhouse building! The building and how it was used originally is interesting in itself. I was fortunate to meet the museum director when I was there for a very short visit- I enjoyed hearing the local stories, and she pointed out many interesting artifacts. I hope to go back again when I have time for a longer visit.

The museum was closed when we got there but it wasn't a big deal because we really wanted to check out three things, the park, the Ohio River and finally the Ravenswood Bridge. The park provides a good view of the Ohio River as well as the State of Ohio which was just across from where we were standing. But most of all, the park provides an excellent front and center view of the historic Ravenswood Bridge which spans the Ohio River. It was a beautiful day!

Finally after seeing the museum several times, I decided to stop and give it a try. Unfortunately, I discovered it was close when I stopped. I walked around the park for a while which is nice....and was surprised by a huge barge on the Ohio River.

There are other structures onsite and picnic pavilions if you need a nice place to break and stretch your legs.

I hope to get there sometime when the museum itself if open.

While traveling from SE Ohio towards Charleston, WV, we stopped in Ravenswood for lunch at Subway. We at lunch in this park. There are plenty of shaded picnic tables. The view across the Ohio River is very nice. Since it was Sunday, the museum was closed, but it did look like an interesting place to visit.

My husband and I stumbled upon this by accident on a recent road trip through West Virginia. We didn't visit the museum since it was closed but It's worth it to stop and walk around. There are plenty of benches to sit along the river and enjoy the views. Next time we will make sure to visit when the museum is open.

We arrived in the evening and the museum was not open but the park was a wonderful place for an after dinner walk. After our walk we enjoyed sitting on one of the many swings and watching traffic on the river and the sunset.

Small City Park that offers a little for your time. Has a boat launch, parking lot for your trailer, a picnic area with a shelter for family get togethers, a place to pull over and watch the River traffic. There is a museum and a kayak rental in the summer for trips up a small tributary that's only acessable by small boat.

Although quite small, this museum has lots to see. The building itself is historical and also has a nearby real log cabin you can tour

Even if the museum is closed (and it was) you still have the park, the Ravenswood bridge, and the Ohio River to enjoy. The view was wonderful. The park also has a 19th century log cabin filled with the owners private possessions. You can sit in the picnic area and just relax watching the river roll by.
