Always a Delightful Place to Visit
My husband and I recently visited Blennerhasset. We were staying at North Bend State Park. We had not been there since our girls were little. We loved touring the mansion and taking a carriage ride around the park. It was a relaxing and pleasant day.

Beautiful day trip in West Virginia.
Been looking forward to this excursion since I heard about it on “Ghost Hunters.” 20 minute ferry ride to the island with some history of the area. First thing we did upon arrival was to get a look around the island on the horse drawn wagon. That lasted for about half an hour, and only goes through the top third of the island, which is the only area the state owns. Saw black walnut orchards, wildlife, and some narration of the life the Blennerhassetts lived for the short time they were there. Then toured the recreated mansion with a docent to get a little more detail into their mismanagement of their fortune. The smaller house that was brought over in its entirety that belonged to their friends was closed, so we were unable to explore it. Sadly, the docent told us they had no ghosts there, so we had no stories to tell. Total time spent was roughly 3 hours with the ferry trip there and back. Total cost per person as of this writing was $31 to do all of the exploring and transportation. They do have a gift shop and a concession stand there, but not much else to do if you don’t purchase the tours in addition to the cost of the ferry. We had a good time and beautiful weather to enjoy this historic site. It will be closing at the end of the month for the season.

    Fun, historical day trip
Took the ferry over (on a warm sunny day, remember to wear sunscreen! It was about. 20 minute ride in the heat) You can buy tickets for the mansion tour and carriage rides on the island, the staff were very helpful. We enjoyed both tours we took (mansion tour and the horse carriage tour) and just walking around the island. We also started a tour of one of the other buildings which was very interesting and much less crowded, but had to cut it short to get back to the ferry. It was a fun trip after living in WV for years without much knowledge of the island!

Great visit with tons of history
Despite the heat, this was a great experience. Everyone on the island was very knowledgeable and nice. We enjoyed touring the homes and the horse and wagon tide was fun. Adam was fun and even telling jokes. Beautiful and well cared for. We had seen it on Ghost Hunters and couldn’t wait to visit. Must see!

    A good history lesson!
The sternwheeler ride to the island was pleasant and about 15 minutes long. The boat leaves Point Park on the hour and Blennerhasset Island in the half hour. It’s a lovely place, wooded, lots of history. Due to heavy rains in April there is no food available as the concession stand was destroyed. Bring snacks, beverages or better yet a picnic lunch as there are plenty of tables to sit. Nice walking paths. Gardens could use some sprucing up as they look a bit tired. The history behind the home is interesting but the home is a reproduction due to the age of the original home and limited care after the original was built. We had a very interesting guide Debi (sp?) and it is interesting to hear about the history along the Ohio River during the late 1700’s/early 1800’s.

This was a very impressive presentation. As a docent I appreciated the docents were so passionate about the history and importance of this historic home. The paddleboat ride was an added treat.

The Blennerhasset Museum is a worthwhile visit to make before going to the island. It holds a wealth of memorabilia and also offers a short video of the history of the island. From there it is a short drive to the port for boarding the Island Belle paddle wheel boat out to the island where you will be met by workers in period costume for your help in getting to a wagon tour, walking tour or for handicapped tourist there are golf carts to take you to the mansion for the tour. The mansion and beautifully manicured grounds are really exquisite reminders of colonial days. Our guide for the mansion was well informed and super helpful.

I found the island enjoyable. The boat ride to and from there was very relaxing. It was nice learning the history of the island and seeing all the different buildings with some of the very old items in them.

It was interesting to learn more about the Burr Conspiracy at the place where some of the planning took place. The sternwheeler ride, horse drawn wagon ride, and the Manaion itself all featured knowledgeable staffers. We're from Frankfort, Kentucky, so we knew about the involvement of James Wilkinson who helped found our town, so this gave us the rest of the story.
