Had a great day riding from Kaikohe to Snow's Farm and back about a 45km ride.
The actual rail trail ends at Okaihau, where you then ride through the town and onto a dedicated cycle trail out of town heading west to Horeke.
We hired our bikes at Kaikohe where there are two bike hire shops. If you don't have a bike go directly to Kaikohe. There are no hire shops at Opua or Kawakawa and the trail is not easy to find at Opua if you are not a local.

Having little knowledge of the places we visited, the cycle trail was a revelation. We took two days, basing ourselves in Kaikohe and hiring e-bikes from the local TopTrail team. Day one goes east, through country towns to Kawakawa to join the historic steam train for a jaunt, before biking to Opua. Shuttled back to Kaikohe, we spent the night at Mulga Bills (great food there). Day two went west, through trails, forests and farms to the quaint food stop on Snow's Farm, ending at Horeke and a night at the historic hotel on Hokianga Harbour. With side visits to mission houses and Wairere boulders, there is so much more to explore. Thoroughly recommend the TopTrail bike tour, then add more days to explore Northland .

These guys did an outstanding job of fitting bikes for us and getting us to and from Kaikohe as we pedaled across beautiful countryside coast to coast. Highly recommend!

Great ride from Opua to Kawakawa
But we found the constant stopping and having to get off our bikes to walk thru metal barriers really off putting.
The track itself is great, and well signed.

Hi we started our Trip in Opua had morning coffee at Kawakawa. Interesting place to visit. It was an interesting ride to Kaikohe where we all happy to arrive. Had a night at the Left Bank accomodation. We stayed in the Back Packers part. It was so good and different. Dinner and Breakfast meals were very nice. Service was excellent. Next day we headed to Horeke And stayed at a lovely old Bed and Breakfast. Had nice Dinner at the Horeke Hotel. Nice meals. Old and interesting Building. Second part of the ride was more interesting. Stopped at a little snack shop on the way and ordered sandwiches. The men enjoyed looking at Farm Machinery.
The next day we were taken back to Opua with our Bikes. Great Trip

Mrs and I have done a few of the North island trail rides now , this was another to tick of the bucket list. Opua to Kawakawa was an easy estuary ride. Good track. The next section from Kawakawa to Kaikohe a steady incline with a few steady uphill sections towards Kaikohe end , this sections is near the road , with several cross overs , some farmland and forest tracks. Not as picturesque as Opua to Kawakawa. Limited cafes to stop for a coffee or a bite in Kaikohe , especially on a Sunday. Did not do Kaikohe to Okaihau, but did stay at Horeke Hotel and did the Horeke to Okaihau ride / section, this was probably the most varied and interesting part of this trail. A fairbit of undulating trail but with some nice trails through picturesque farmland , forests , riverside trails . A challenging switchback hill climb about 6 k's out from Okaihau end , some tricky corner's when going back downhill, glad we had E bikes going up. Recommend the Kiwi Kai cafe for a luncf stop. All in all a great trail ride which we both enjoyed. 👍Thumbs up

Fascinating, stunning bike ride!! Not technically challenging but varied and beautiful and a great workout for anyone on the pushbike! Kids manage the whole thing and utterly delighted with it. Highly recommend starting at the highest point Okaihau and cycling to Horeke, then driving back to Okaihau and cycling east to Opua from there. Kaikohe to opua was surprisingly easy compared to our first day

This was a 5 day all inclusive guided E-bike tour from the Bay of Islands in the East to the Hokianga harbour in the West that my wife and I joined.
We had never partaken of an organised holiday in our lives, so the whole experience was quite novel. We loved every minute of it!
The organisation was faultless, the bikes excellent, accommodation outstanding, and food in abundance.
The icing on the cake was Ropata, our host and guide. He is a born raconteur, a font of local information, a vision of sartorial splendor, and a thoroughly nice bloke!
We are both in our seventies, only moderately fit, but found the the cycling a doddle.
I would thoroughly recommend Northland Experience.

Absolutely loved the twin coast trail. We rode it in sections over a three day period. Day 1 Opua to Kawakawa return, very easy grade. Day 2 Kaikohe to Okaihau, a little more hilly but very rideable the whole way, was fun riding back to Kaikohe after a short stop in Okaihau for a real fruit ice cream. Day 3 was the best. We rode from Horeke to Okaihau & back. Had lunch at the Sapphire Cafe, highly recommend the homemade apple pie & smoked fish pie, the coffee was great too. Awesome ride back to Horeke. Have to make mention of the Country Food kiosk picnic stop by the river, delicious jam & cream scone, washed down with a thirst quenching cup of homemade lemonade. Kiosk is open Wed -Sunday only from 10-2pm

We have risen the trail in a number of section from east to west. It is very well constructed and the trail surface is very good for the most part. The scenery is constantly changing and there are lots of beautiful sights to see. The boardwalk towards the end at Horiki is a delight to ride along!

We have e-bikes which made the trip very easy - much of trail didn't need any power assist.

Warning: We did one section with our grandchildren in child seats .....at all the road crossing there are steel parallel bard to push your bike through. These definitely cause an issue with a child set and may well so with paniers also.
