- RosiezWaiuku, New Zealand7 contributionsThe Parrot Prison. The positive.. We had a great time. The kids enjoyed interacting with the birds at the beginning of the visit and the staff were nice. Decent playground if the kids want to stay a little longer afterwards, and some seats to have a rest. The negative.. Some of the birds didn’t have great cages and I felt sad for them, especially some of the larger ones. It’s a tiny place so you should also know that before you make a long trip if you’re travelling from far. You could walk the whole way around it in a few minutes. Again, the start of the visit when we got to interact with the birds who were cage-less was so much fun, and the kids had the best time. 5 stars for that part.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 13 December 2022
- sueMassey, New Zealand2 contributionsAwesome experience that is well worth a visitFriendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff. The selection of birds is awesome. The shop is well stocked with food and boredom busters to purchase for your own birds if you have any. The grounds and aviaries are very nicely laid out and look well looked after. They have some truly wonderful birds with big characters. Definitely well worth a visit.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2023

- Super W1 contributionSmall cagesFriendly staff & beautiful birds. Unfortunately the cages are quite small & we felt sad seeing them in there, we had expected a larger aviary. Wouldn’t have gone if we had known it was so small. Nevertheless, the birds were really beautiful & we could feed them :)Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 May 2023

I was reluctant to take the children here as I’m not huge on animal tourism, but seeing as it was a wet day and we needed to fill the day, we decided to go after reading several promising reviews.
Although there are many birds, quite a number of them seem distressed. A lot of birds had plucked their feathers out (Google to learn about the sad reasons behind this behavior our), were bobbing their heads side to side (a telltale sign of stress) and birds at the entrance were handed to visitors as they entered, though they were saturated from the rain. One lovely young bird kept doing a soft cry and I was told that it missed its Mum down in another cage - surely their welfare is more important than visitors wanting a photo op??
Sadly, my photos of the truly bald birds will not upload which I’m sure would help deter you.
I’m not overly sure what to make of this place but I would not go again and hope that if you’re reading this, you reconsider visiting too.

Hi chris we have a good Bird World here in australia (cairns), no small cages like the ones in the pics. We were told to stay away from the Macaws as it was breeding season and they get vicious. So perhaps this is why your Elmo experience was diffeent. My question is, what time of day did you visit? I know that with animals the time of day can also affect their behavior and I am hoping to visit he next April.

Hi, Whilst our breeding Macaws are caged, Elmo is free. His behaviour however can only be described as mischievous ! We usually recommend that people visit first thing as the birds are eager to please and this can wear off towards the afternoon if we have had a lot of visitors or they gave eaten too many peanuts!
