About
Under The Stars are a mobile stargazing tour company based within Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve. We come to you at your home or holiday accommodation with everything you need for awesome guided views of the southern night skies. We bring all the equipment to keep you comfortable while we guide you on a visual journey using binoculars, a large telescope and your own eyes.

I want to thank Chris for introducing us to the world of Astronomy in such a comfortable way. His undeniable professionalism created a space that was not only comfortable, but radiated a sense of warmth and welcome from the very start!
Chris's passion for the cosmos was not just educational, it was contagious. He guided us through constellations and clusters, brought us up close and personal with Saturn's rings and debunked the reason for stars twinkling (maybe not alien raves?)
My partner is a keen photographer and really appreciate the effort Chris put in to help me nail shots of the milky way. He was patient and had a deep knowledge of what's needed to line up perfect photos. I came away with some invaluable tips.
Chris really takes care of you and has thought of all the details to ensure you are warm and comfortable throughout the tour.
I wholeheartedly recommend Chris's stargazing sessions for both those interested in astronomy or astrophotography, and starry-eyed beginners to experienced enthusiasts. Experiences like this are as rare as Halley's comet!

Chris took such great care of us as we planned our trip to New Zealand. In addition to providing great advice on when and where to see stars, he answered general questions about where to stay, how to spend our time etc. His flexibility, availability and depth of knowledge really helped ensure our trip was a huge success.

Our Matariki celebration took an unexpected turn when our Airbnb fell through, but thanks to the amazing team at “Under the Stars,” our stargazing dreams became a reality! Chris, the wonderful guide, went above and beyond to find us an alternative open space in Martinborough, proving to be incredibly accommodating and understanding. Chris even provided us with three viewing time options, he was clearly committed to making the night truly magical.
As the night sky unveiled its brilliance, I was left speechless by the enchanting sight of the Milky Way - a spectacle I had never seen before as a US native. Not only did we witness this cosmic wonder, but Chris also imparted valuable knowledge about finding true south, identifying the brightest stars, and sharing captivating tales of the great Emu constellation.
The attention to comfort was outstanding, with heated blankets, hot water bottles, lounge chairs, and a cozy lounge blanket ensuring a truly immersive and enjoyable stargazing adventure.
If you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind dark sky experience in New Zealand, “Under the Stars” is an absolute must-do. This stargazing haven offers an unforgettable journey through the cosmos, guided by experts who genuinely care about creating a memorable and educational experience.

This was a great activity to do in the winter night sky. As well as stars we got to see a close up of the moon all from the comfort of our accommodation in Carterton. The reclining chairs, blankets and hot water bottles were well received. Our kids also really enjoyed it and learned so much from Chris who is extremely knowledgeable.

Chris set up while we waited inside, we then got to lie back on comfy reclining bean bags with hot water bottles and blankets while Chris took us on a guided tour of the southern night sky, from Alpha Centauri to Canopus, through the southern Cross to Scorpio and the Maui fish hook and off to Galaxies far away. From old red giants to new nebula. Using naked eyes, binoculars and an amazing telescope.

Had a lovely evening looking at the night sky being expertly guided by Chris who came to our resort and set up the telescope on the tennis court. He was very patient with the barrage of kids' questions. It was rather cold so the blankets and hot water bottles provided were very welcomed. Recommended.

This was one of the most memorable experiences I have had in a very long time. Sitting around a fire with friends, Chris took us on a journey around what I have clearly taken for granted for so many years. Seeing Saturn from my back yard was AMAZING

This is such a great experience - sitting comfortably at our holiday accommodation, being lead on a tour of the night sky. Chris is very knowledgeable but keeps it relatable. Learning, awe and fun, all wrapped into one!
