Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went to Martinborough, Tuesday 4th February, hoping to try some of the district's wines, especially Ata Rangi. The Wine Bank seemed an attractive option, offering wines in the centre of town, from different makers, without the irresponsibility of driving to various cellar doors. For me, the designated driver, spitting is not the same as actually drinking a wine.

Closed Tuesdays.

I can't recall seeing anything on their limited website about days open and days closed. It wasn't a temporary thing either, because there is a metal strip for Tuesdays attached to the days / hours signage near the front door.

We were having a drink outside at the Martinborough Hotel, diagonally opposite, and a fellow came up to us and asked " do you know where the Wine Bank is ? " When we told him " over there, but closed Tuesdays ", he looked as annoyed as we felt, and appeared to have the same attraction to a central location, as we did.

An opinion, which I think is reliable, from a local motel proprietor, is that the Wine Bank is more expensive than it is worth - easier and cheaper to just go to the hotel and buy a glass, because they have a reasonable range of local wine.

When I said to him, in 2016 when we were there, a similarly formatted Wine Bank was in Napier, but it appeared to be now closed up, he quipped " Yeah, I think this one will go the same way ! "

Recommended you check whether they'll be open, before you go.

Thank you for your review. For clarification, The Wine Bank does not have a website so it is extremely unlikely that you gained your apparent mis-information about our operating times and dates from it.... We advertise our opening times on both Google and Facebook, and as you observed, they are also clearly displayed outside of our premises. As for your "opinion" garnered from a "local motel proprietor", it is exactly that - an opinion. Whether we are "worth it" is of course subjective, but the fact of the matter is that the wine we offer by the glass is actually cheaper than most establishments in Martinborough and certainly cheaper than the exact same wine by the glass at the establishment you chose to imbibe at. We specialise in offering samples of up to 64 different wines - many of which are unavailable for sampling anywhere else and as such there is a cost to this relative to the retail value of the wine itself. We have observed that by far the majority of our customers understand and appreciate that they have to pay for the opportunity to sample these wines - something that is substantiated by repeat custom as well as ever increasing new customer visits. Finally, there never was a "Wine Bank" in Napier (The Wine Bank is our own independent company and not a chain etc.) - you are perhaps referring instead to a wine shop that closed a few years ago that most definitely did not offer self-service wine tasting like we do - which is the crux of our business. It is disappointing that you feel that a "quip" from a random stranger predicting the demise of a business that you know very little about was worth commenting on in a forum such as Trip Adviser. Our recommendation to you is that you reserve your judgement for real life experiences rather than for perceived ones that somehow satisfy your need to justify your sense of entitlement.

The Wine Bank situated in the square at Martinborough is a self serve, pay as you go wine tasting room.

The wine bank offers self serve to about 60 different vineyards/varieties of wine.

When you enter the wine bank, approach the counter and swap your credit card for a wine bank card. The wine bank card records how much $ value if wine you have tasted while visiting the bank.

The wine bank also offers the purchase of gourmet platters to have while tasting the wines.

The serving of each wine comes in 3 sizes and you are charged according to the amount you consume. The wine is expensive in this format, but you do get to taste many wine from different vineyards at the same location.

We enjoyed getting into some of the Pinot Noirs. Dry River, Craggy Range, Escarpment, Schubert, ATA Rangi, Te Awa just to name a few.

Great concept!

I went with my husband who sampled a few wines. I can't drink but I found the concept and set up really great and can imagine how great it would be if I were able to sample a few. The staff member was friendly and offered me a soft drink.
How it works is you get given a card with a chip, it's self service so you select the wine you want and the volume you want (taster, half glass or full glass). Costs are clearly written and information about wines are in the books provided. At the end you take your card back and pay the trial of whatever you tasted. The wines are all locally made and you can buy it as well. There is also gin tasting. Definitely recommend for a wine lover!

What a great set up, comfy chairs, back ground music and educated staff. Ask for a tasting or go with the do it yourself model (highly recommended). Bottle sales available as are a couple of snacking food options. Costs are published and cover, a taste, half a glass or a full glass. A great afternoon thank you.

Wonderful experience. Great anti-pastas that they will customise for you. The tastu g system is brilliant. Its a very classy, relaxed place - a bit like being in a comfortable lounge with wine...

Somewhere different to have a drink - a great concept. Visited with a group of girlfriends. It was good to have the option of a gin tasting - not just wine . Would definitely visit again.

Hey guys, what you do in your remote place is outstanding. I liked every second in your wine heaven. If I wouldn‘t live 24 flight hours away, I would stay much more with you.

This is a converted old bank into an interesting wine bar experience. On the corner of the iconic Martinborough Square, in a historic building - well done on bringing something new to a great weekend in this lovely town.

The decor is a collection of comfy sofas and armchairs, with a range of rooms and little nooks (that would have once been bank reception and offices and so much more fun in this new format).

The experience is the wine motion dispensing system which allows you to try over 40 wines from the region, in one of three pours (taste, half glass or full glass). You only pay for what you sample. And if you like something you can buy a bottle to take home.

They had a good selection of food suitable for experiencing great wines.

The team of Sarah and Nicholas were very knowledgable, welcoming and fun.

Would recommend and will definitely be back.
