About
Spectacular scenery, gourmet food and warm rural hospitality – the Tora Coastal Walk is the best-loved privately run walk in New Zealand. This exhilarating three-day walk takes you to private hill-country farms, river valleys, native bush, hilltop ridges and the magnificent Tora coastline – and to complete each day, comfortable and stylish rural accommodation and delicious food, carefully prepared with fresh local ingredients by the people who own and farm the land. The walk includes all accommodation, meals, maps, and access to the track. Your luggage is transported each day, so you don't have to carry it with you. One of the best things about the Tora Coastal Walk is its strictly limited numbers. Only 14 people a day are allowed on the one-way track, leaving you free to walk uninterrupted by two-way traffic. Just 30 minutes from Martinborough Wine Village.

Fantastic time with friends and family. The walking was great , amazing views and changing scenery as you get to the spectacular coast. The accomodation was fantastic and the food was beyond all expectations. The walk was challenging in places but had several options to make it easier. We had two mid 70s in our group who had a great time. The hosts , organisation and communication were all top notch - you could tell the team has been making this work for 30 years - it was a well run operation.

We were a family group of four - two mothers with their daughters ready for a great experience!
It was a long day getting to Martinborough, then out to Whakapata cottage, so it was nice to meet our fellow walkers, relax with a wine, enjoy the beautiful dinner and get a good night's sleep. Early start next morning after breakfast, weather was kind but really WINDY once we got up on the hills! We were glad we had packed a thermos to enjoy a coffee when we stopped for a break. Second night was at Stony Bay Lodge, purpose built and very stylish. Again, gorgeous dinner dinner delivered with separate options for vegetarian and GF walkers. Because of the wind, we opted for an easy walk the next day to our final accommodation, enjoying a free afternoon.
The final day wasn't as challenging as Day one, and we got back to Whakapata Lodge in five hours, allowing time for a shower and departing before the next lot of guests arrived.
Like all outdoor pursuits, weather has an impact, but it's the company plus time spent together that is priceless.
Thankyou Tora for looking after everyone so well, and making us all feel so welcome.
Judy, Nadine, Sue and Giselle.

Fantastic walk. Unique opportunity to hike across private farmland. Stunning views, varied beautiful landscapes, nicely challenging . So well organised. Amazing food provided. Tasty 2 course dinners plus packed lunch with delicious home-made traybakes and afternoon tea and cake on arrival. Lovely accommodation - traditional farmhouses and designer pad on the seafront

This was an absolutely fabulous experience. Did it with 7 friends, we had a magical time together. Extra 4 people (2 sisters and a lovely couple) in the group were great too. The accomodation and food (yes, fab breakfast, lunches for the walk plus dinner and desert) were great as well as the actual walk!. Stunning scenery, great country side and Kiri was super friendly keeping in touch. Highly highly recommended

My two girlfriends and I had a lovely time. Everything was so well organised and the food and accommodation were amazing. It wasn't just a 3 day hike - it was fresh air, great exercise, wonderful views and a very relaxing time to catch up with friends since all else had been taken care of for us, by the kind and welcoming families that run the walk and the farms that we walked through.

Booked out 18 months ahead of our trip but it was worth the long wait list. Great to do with friends. The hiking has enough challenge to make it interesting. Take poles! Day two is pretty cruise. The optional trip up the Trig is worth it. Food is amazing and plenty of it. Accommodation is fab.

This was the first group walk I’ve taken part in. I’ll be honest, I was lured by the thought of someone taking your luggage (and wine!) to each accommodation and arriving to home baking and a prepared evening meal.
The walk itself is relatively easy. Day one is long, but has amazing views and optional view point hikes. Day two is short a short walk along the coast to the next accommodation but has the option to climb a relatively steep hill for great views. Day three mixes it up a little and walks through a lot of woodland. We we’re lucky with the weather, but I’m not sure I would have enjoyed day three as much had it been heavy rain. Some of the track is very narrow and very muddy. Poles and good boots would be essential in bad weather.
All the accommodations were lovely, with comfortable beds and pretty much everything you need. The food was next level! A real highlight of the trip. If you’ve booked the trip as a group of friends, it really is a wonderful experience.

I’m trying to think of some feedback to offer improvements, but I’m struggling. Maybe promoting Freddie to ‘Day 1 Chief Guide’ 😉

Overall, I highly recommend this well organised and scenic walk, but it’s so much more than ‘just a walk’.

We had a booking for 14 so there was only our group. Weather was great which really makes a big difference, although last day walking out was about 28'C which was hot. (Prefer that to a day of rain!!) Really enjoyed the afternoons/evenings when we would gather round the table for a drink/dinner and maybe a game of cards later.
As described by others - the food is excellent and plenty of it. You won't go hungry. Staff are very friendly and engaging.
Everything is very well organised and the accommodation is fully equipped with pretty much everything you would need.
Highly recommend it, particularly if you can put together a group to book to fully book the trip.
Weather can make a huge difference, but as you have to book the Tora a long time in advance you just have to take your chances.
Highly recommend it.

A bucket list trip and well worth the wait. Sign up for the cancellation waitlist to be alerted to places that pop up, otherwise book HEAPS in advance cause this walk is POPULAR and deservedly so.
Amazing countryside, incredible hosts, delicious food, well signposted track, majestic hills, sky and weather, be prepared for all seasons. The lodges are comfortable, cosy and perfectly equiped with hearty fires (already lit), great wifi, homebaking (delicious) and plenty of post walk beverage fridge space - the postman shifts it from lodge to lodge for you! Hoorah!
All round superb experience.
