Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wednesday 16th June and we visited Ponta do Garajau. The main reason for our visit was to see the large Statue of Christo Rei.

We were very pleasantly surprised to discover that there was more to see and do here that just the Statue.

Just along from the Statue down a lot of steps leads to the Viewpoint, Miradouro do Garajau. There are some incredible views from here. Also it is possible to see the front of Christ Rei, as it stands facing out to sea. Along the way was a whale monitoring station

At the bottom of the cliff is Praia de Garajau. It is not a sandy beach, rocks and stones; beach shoes required.

There is a bar restaurant serving snacks, meals and drinks.

Sun loungers are available and there are showers and toilets. We were informed that this was one of the best spots for snorkeling

There are two ways to get down to the beach, as it us not advisable do drive down. The first is the energetic way, to walk down the long and winding road. The second is the lazy way, to take the cable car down. The return fare is €5 each, thought fare was expensive in comparison to other cable cars on the island, still a fun experience.

So with the Staute, Miradouro, Cablecar, beach and a good walk all here, it is worth more than a quick look.

The views are stunning here, specially at sunset.
You can walk all the way through from the statue Christo del Rey to a nice viewing point.
Just steps, so should be possible for everybody.

Can be walked to from local hotels but is a very steep walk of upto 2 miles, we were recommended to visit by a local shop owner. A small cafe near the statue service the local portuese tarts (a variety of egg custard tart), very reasonable price for coffee and flavoured iced tea. The statue is difficult to get a picture of from the front unless you sit on the floor under it.

Great viewpoint and the statue is worth a visit. I walked down the long and windy road which was lovely then took the cable car back. Short journey but steep. There’s also a little cafe at the bottom.

It was worth walking 3km uphill to see those gorgeous views. The statue of Jesus is similar to the one in Rio but much smaller.

In Ponta do Garajau you have a nice view of Funchal bay, there are parking spaces nearby and you don't have to walk very long to get to the "Cristo Rei" statue. There is also a bar next to the parking and a cable car to take you down to the beach or you can also go on foot, but it's a long way down. Better to visit when the weather is warmer, it's usually a windy place.

Beautiful statue of Christ! We had to walk down to a lower pier to take a proper photo but was well worth it, it's amazing! Then we took the cable car down to the beach which was rocky and struggled to walk on but had a lovely dip in the water. Very nice trip!

Take the cable car down to the beach below. Cafe on beach and fun to do. The statue stands right on the cliff with stunning views in all directions.
