For three centuries, our family has made our way of life in the rolling landscapes of Fauquier County, Virginia. We have proudly served as stewards of the Virginia Piedmont, a unique and special place enriched with cultural significance of sweeping historical importance. We invite you and your families to share these pastoral meadows, primordial forests, and gentle slopes lined with lush vineyards that we have called home for generations. Virginians have long identified themselves with the vine, have recognized its importance, and have consistently promoted a viable wine industry. As Virginians, grape and wine production is part of our collective cultural identity and heritage dating back as early as 1619 with the adoption of the Twelfth Act of the Original Acts of the Virginia General Assembly that required every landowner to plant and maintain ten vines. Today, what was once a dream of a few Founding Fathers has now become a reality for all to share and enjoy. Wine in moderation is an integral part of our family's heritage. At Philip Carter, our history is wine, and our future is to promote the gracious way of life through wine, art and culture. Philip Carter Winery offers the absolute perfect way for each and every person to enjoy the unique terroir and breathtaking beauty of Fauquier County. From a romantic walk through the Philip Carter vineyards to an elegant winemaker's dinner in our grand Cleve Hall or the perfect personalized, private group tasting in our King Carter suite overlooking the vineyards, our incredible family winery is sure to satisfy!

Fun and informative tour and tasting We enjoyed the wines and picnic snacks. Music topped off the day with a great acoustic mix. Vic did a wonderful job with the tour and tasting and history of the facility.

As members of the PCW club our views may be different than others, but every person we recommend to PCW loves it. Great selection of wines...tasting menu changes with the seasons as does the decorating in the tasting room. Lots to do for the family.

While we stayed at the Inn at Vineyards Crossing, they lined up a tour here for us. Our guide was great, we got to tour from the actual fields all the way thru to the seller and then to a room for tasting. They have a great selection of wines, and the Port is to die for!! All the staff was really helpful. We got a basket with some nibbles and of course we bought some wine, and some of the other guests at the inn along with my husband and I enjoyed an afternoon outside in the vineyard. I look forward to going again!! AND once I came home I was excited to see that a local Restaurant that we just started going to carries Phillip Carter Wines!!!

Skip this winery. The setting is nice, but the wines are mediocre. As importantly, this winery has sued Virginia to force the removal of Virginia's Mask Mandate. Nothing says you care about your customers, like putting them in an unsafe environment.
There are many good options for wine in Virginia, that also provide a safe environment for their customers. Seek those out instead.

The wines may be more than worthwhile for a visit but the whole set-up is so poor it leaves one with nothing but a bad taste in the mouth. This winery really needs to rethink their whole organization and atmosphere: confusing layout of where the tastings are actually held, bored and seemingly uncommitted staff with an attitude of resentment (no doubt reflecting the management), long waits for pours and check-out, and more apparent interest in making as much money from other activities than promoting their wines. I wonder how their neighbors and other wineries in the area view Philip Carter.

Crowded, and understaffed. Rude wine educators. Try going to some of the less known wineries for a more authentic experience.

We have since moved to Florida so I have something to compare the Philip Carter Winery to so I am taking the time to write this review.
My wife and I purchased a voucher to see this winery from Travelzoo. It was quite a drive from our home in Fredericksburg and we expected to see more, but it was the off season and we had to use our voucher before it expired. They had a very limited selection of wines and no wine tasting so we were rather upset with the amount of time expended on this venture.
Compared to our local winery in Clermont Florida (Lakeridge Winery), I would rate the Philip Carter Winery a two star at most.
As for the taste of the Philip Carter wines, they pale in comparison to the Lakeridge Winery wines. The reason being is that the Lakeridge wines are processed with Stainless Steel vats in Florida whereas the Philip Carter wines have an after taste from the wooden barrels .
There is very little to see at Philip Carter Winery and I would not waste your time seeing this place as there are far better winery’s in the USA as we found out.

Vistied Philip Carter Winery 29Sep2013 for wine-tasting. Unimaginative (boring) stone walkway led up to bare-bones 2-story lodge. No effort made to spruce up the lodge with nice furnishings or historically-interesting decorations; no wine prizes hanging on the walls; no Wine-related sales items on any shelves; etc. This made the interior of the lodge very boring and bland. This Winery has very expansive acres of vines under growth, but instead is obviously geared only towards lining everyone up like cattle, and then rushing clients through Wine Tasting as quickly as possible (collect their money and rush them out the door). All doors on both floors of the Lodge (8-10 of them) except the 1-front door were locked, forcing everyone from the downstairs wine-tasting to climb back upstairs to exit the lodge, and then climb down the outside stairs again just to sit on the lawn. What a foolish practice (fire safe?). Wines for tasting were okay/average tasting, but bottles of wines were very much overpriced. Winery was popular this Sunday, so everyone got equally-bad service. Tasting Wine Staff were curt, unfriendly, and rushed everyone through the tastings just to pack people through (felt like amusement park ushers, instead of quality attention for wine tasting event). Outside lawn had a few picnic tables scattered around in the open, blistering sun with no landscaping or interesting views to occupy people as they rested. There are no trees, bushes...nothing, except bare lawns. This winery is very large, but makes no effort at all to appear welcoming. I was very disappointed with this place. I recommend that everyone should avoid this place and go on to one of the 10-other (better) Wineries within 10-miles of this place.

I had never visited a winery but when I received a coupon from Travelocity I decided this was the time to go. I invited a friend who has visited many of Virginia's wineries to accompany me. It was an overcast Monday in April and the drive from DC was beautiful. The winery was tucked back off of the main roads and offered a fine view of the mountains and countryside. The winery is in a newish metal building set amidst the grapevines. One enters into a narrow room with a bar on one side and a seating area on the other. From behind the bar we were warmly greeted by James and Ben, two young men of intelligence and charm. We were treated to an excellent array of both red and white wines from the tasting menu as well as two exceptional wines from the "members only" reserve because they were opened for a previous tasting. And while the wines were all very good, it was James' encyclopedic knowledge of the wine and of the history of the local wineries, vintners, politics and gossip! The tour was filled with interesting facts and opinions making it far more interesting that the usual rote descriptions tours often dish out. While learning about the process of wine making we also discussed various wine pairings with different foods. Upon learning my friend was a vegetarian James made a point of describing what wines would go well with a variety of vegetarian dishes - and why! We sat at a table in the vineyard and ate a lunch of a local cheese, summer sausage and crackers with a jar of great cranberry chutney. The only thing I missed was a piece of fruit. An apple would have made the meal. We purchased a crisp white wine to have with our lunch and another to take home for another day. It was all around a perfect afternoon. If I have any regrets it would be that the two wines I most wanted to purchase were on the members only list. The membership is free but requires the purchase of 2 bottles every two months at a 15% discount. They also offer great events for their members throughout the year. And if I were not just visiting the area I would love to join the club. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys good wine, beautiful scenery, and leisurely afternoons in the company of charming tour guides who really know there stuff!

I am in no way a wine connoiseur - I just drink what I like and claim no significant knowledge of wines. That disclaimer aside, the actual review: I had come across the Philip Carter Winery through a Groupon deal which included a tour, tasting, souvenir glass, and a meat and cheese picnic, which was the perfect activity for our wedding anniversary. The tour was brief, but it was neat hearing details about the grapes while standing in the middle of the vineyard. The wines themselves are decent, but nothing notable or remarkable - we found only one we liked, mostly just to enjoy with our picnic. The picnic was a little disappointing, mainly because the meat was a deli pack of Hormel salami..I just anticipated something a little nicer, but it was edible. We were fortunate to have a beautiful fall day and the scenery is really lovely and staff were very pleasant. I personally would not pay full price for the entire experience, nor buy their wine again, but it was a nice way to spend time.
