Must see in the Townsend area
Visited the caverns with the experienced tour guide, Brandi, who was excellent! She made it fun for all ages- small children up to elderly grandparents. She made each person feel like she was talking to them.. The caverns are very interesting and unique. The price was reasonable for a 90 minute tour. I would highly recommend this for anyone! It does require going up and down a total of 400 steps and a few areas are quite low so you have to duck. My husband is 6’4” and had no problem navigating the pathways, but you do have to pay attention to what you are doing.

    Beautiful challenging and confidence building
It was awesome I'm a 64 year old who is a rare brain cancer survivor and kidney cancer. When I saw the stairs I started to cry. As much as I wanted to share this experience with my grandchildren I was afraid I couldn't make the 400. My daughter and grands encouraged me to try. It was exhilarating! It was worth every step and the hyperventilating at the top but I finished. It made me know despite my treatments I still can! Not going to lie I had to push myself like crazy. Staff was kind and encouraging. After that experience I had the confidence to hike up Laurel Falls, Dollywood and dancing at my daughters wedding. not all in the same day. Grateful for the opportunity even if I am so very sore still from the experiences. Thank you for the beauty and convenience bust! I would like to continue to build on the strength and go back and try again. My group ages 4, 7, 9, 38, 39, 65 and me 64 love it.

    Cavern Hike in Tennessee
On a scenic trip you can find the caverns not too far from the highway outside of Townsend Tennessee. The overall experience was great, the backstory is interesting, and the cavern is worth seeing. We wouldn't say it was breathtaking but if you like natural sites then you should stop in. The price of admission was very low and the guide was helpful and patient with the overall group. If you are physically challenged in terms of walking, standing, balancing, and climbing stairs you may want to think twice.

    Always learning something new!
Great location for history lesson! The tour guides are extremely knowledgable and answer any and all questions that are presented about the caves. I do not remember the young man’s name but he informed of us things from the history standpoints and also from personal experiences he has had in the cave. This is not our first trip to these caves and it seems every time we learn something new and gain better experiences!

Fantastic formations, beautiful drive, great tour guides
This was one of the coolest caves I’ve ever been in! 11/10 would recommend. We loved learning about the history of the cave and how its family owned and operated. Our fantastic tour guide Jonah was so knowledgeable and fun, we definitely want to go back! Some of the most beautiful formations I’ve ever seen. Also a beautiful drive through the Smokey mountains to get there! Fantastic day all around! Definitely going back!

Scary at first, exciting, then relaxed. Great tour guide ( Brandy ) Waterfall ending.
Our group was about 12 people. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, her name is Brandy. It started out pretty scary, was exciting and mysterious all the way through and became quite relaxed to the point you'd want to walk through it all a second time. The ending was quite climatic and I won't give it all away. I'm actually going to research other caverns to explore now that I've broken the ice ( got my feet wet. ) I didn't think I'd capture such good photos in a cave! I'd highly recommend this experience to others. The stairs were a minor workout, nothing too exhausting, I took a short breather between staircases when there were 2 in a row. Enjoy ya'all!

Great experience! My tween girls enjoyed it!
Tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Besides the 87 stairs (go down once and go up once) the “hike” was very easy. My Apple Watch noted it to be around half mile in total. My girls are ages 12 and 10. They enjoyed it tremendously. It stays a cool 53 degrees at all times. We were comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt when “hiking”.

    Excellent Underground Adventure
We try to do one educational adventure each day on vacation. We’ve done several different caverns in Virginia and Tennessee, but this might have been my favorite. Large system to tour. Great young man giving us the tour. If you have to carry a child be prepared for the exercise. Highly recommend!!

Good family fun on a rainy day
Great family trip on a rainy day. Be ready to wait in line. We parked the kids in the car with some rock candy and drank a beer in line. It was a great cave. We have done mammoth and it was just as good. The bathrooms could use some attention.

    Wonderful experience, a must see!
The stairs were fine .....don't let the number scare you. The formations are spectacular.....I took so many photos! I only wish that folks were instructed not to touch the walls, formations, and other features to preserve the unique ecosystem. Every other cave I have visited has this guidance in place. I am so glad I visited.

We went to the caverns today and were shocked to find tours packed with at least 40-60 people, most not wearing masks. We should have turned around from the moment we got there and saw that not a single employee was wearing a mask in the ticket sales area. We proceeded to join a tour with a guide (who was also without a mask). As we proceeded into the cave, down the steps. a huge group was coming up the narrow staircase. Again, few people wore masks. The last straw was when everyone began singing “lean on me” to demonstrate the acoustics without masks in the confined space. When I turned around to leave I was told by an employee that “Lydia” was leading the singalong. Why would I care who it is? Especially when this employee felt the need to tell me from 6 inches away from my face. Clearly these folks don’t know there is a serious pandemic going on and have no idea what social distancing is. This is a coronavirus super cluster waiting to happen. See some of my photos...

The caverns themselves are nice with an interesting history. The guide was pretty good, but I wouldn’t say excellent. My biggest issue was the complete and utter lack of safety precautions in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. We were in a VERY large group. I counted 30 in our group alone, and we passed (or squeezed) by multiple other groups of at least that size as well. There was absolutely NO possibility of social distancing for the majority of the time, given the size of the group and the numerous other groups we had to pass by in close quarters. My family members and I were also the only ones wearing a mask in our group. They did tell us when we bought our tickets that they did not require masks, but I assumed that meant they would be doing social distancing instead, but that was not the case. They were extremely busy and seemed to pack as many people as they possibly could into each group.

If they do not want to require masks, then the responsible thing to do would be to decrease the group size to 10 or so and plan out where groups could pass each other in the larger rooms to preserve social distancing, instead of groups passing each other haphazardly in the tighter parts of the cavern. They could operate safely with a few simple changes, and yet they choose not to, instead opting to pack groups full in order to make more profit, regardless of the health and safety of their customers.

I would also like to point out that they sell fudge in their lobby/shop, which is sitting in a non-enclosed case. The entire back of the case is open, with multiple employees sitting behind the counter NOT wearing masks at all. That has got to be some kind of health code violation during this pandemic, and even if it’s not, it is HIGHLY irresponsible and downright dangerous. They are literally flouting every health recommendation made by local, national, and medical authorities and are callously putting the lives of their customers at risk by doing so. As a healthcare provider myself, what I saw at Tuckaleechee Caverns was utterly appalling. Any business willing to put their customers at risk to protect their bottom line will not gain my support or endorsement. Therefore, I do NOT recommend visiting this attraction.

Masks are not required in our county. You are responsible of making the choice to go , or not to go on a Group Tour. What confuses me with you saying your a healthcare provider and that we are completely irresponsible and still chose to go on the tour. It seems that you might need to plan different and be more "responsible", if you decide to go to anywhere with a tour group. Hope you come back to see us.

We're staying near Pigeon Forge and wanted to see one of the many caves available in Tennessee. I'm very glad we choose to see this one. Our tour guide Gavin was friendly, knowledgeable, and had that relaxed Southern feel to his presentation. The price was less than other caves we had looked at, and it was only 20-30 minutes outside of Pigeon Forge.

When you go into the cave, you end up getting two main experiences. The "big room" and the waterfall. Both are impressive and involve going up and down stairs. In a few locations you have to stoop down to pass through (like 4 feet tall) but those are easily overcome if you don't have any physical conditions which prevent you from freely bending your back. If you have back problems or trouble walking, I would not recommend this experience. It is definitely not handicap accessible (it's a cave after all).

I went with my wife and two girls (6 and 9). All enjoyed it immensely. There is a gift shop at the surface which sits above the cave entrance which has a large variety of stones, carvings, and lots of other nick knacks. I'm glad we included this on our trip to Tennessee.

We visited the caves on a very wet Saturday and the tours were extremely crowded. There were 4 tours happening at the same time each with up to 50 or 60 people and many without masks all crowded together in a space with extremely poor ventilation. The guides were also not wearing masks. The group was so large and we were at the back so we couldn’t hear anything our guide said so we learned nothing at all about the caves and the 1 ¼ hour tour took over 2 hours as we were just standing around waiting for other groups to move on for most of the time, As a result what I am sure would have otherwise been a fun and interesting tour was boring.
I understand that company wants to take advantage of the larger than normal volume of visitors and to make as much money from the situation but the way this was done was really unacceptable and certainly not worth $18 per person. It also put everyone at risk of covid.
There was also absolutely no mention of the number of steps involved and as a result an elderly visitor had to be basically carried out because she was not physically able to manage the tour.
At the very least there should be better information about what to expect on the tour beforehand, masks should be enforced for visitors and the guides should be wearing face shields.
The groups were way too large- personally I feel a group of a dozen to 15 people should be the maximum so that everyone can hear the guides and the tour progress quickly and smoothly. With small groups taking less time they would still be able to handle a large volume of people as the tours would take half the time and there would be fewer people standing around for long periods.
All in all this was very disappointing as although the caves themselves were nice The experience was not well managed.

This trip was not necessarily on our itinerary for our Pigeon Forge vacation, but we were so glad we made it a part of our trip. Not only is the cave a thing of beauty, with a great story about how it was discovered but our guide Jeff made it so entertaining and educational. My family and I were confused as to whether we were in his first tour group of the day...or his first group ever...regardless he is part of the reason we had such a great experience. I Highly recommend this excursion to anyone who can handle all the steps.

This place is just simply amazing. While we were at Pigeon Forge we went to the Hollywood wax museum, Titanic, Cades Cove, and the Tuckaleechee Caverns. The caverns were the best. They are huge, be prepared to walk and go up and down stairs(around 450 of them). But the exercise is well worth it, so beautiful and awe inspiring. The guides are very informative and entertaining, and the history of when the caves were found by two young brothers and that they are still in the family is awesome.

We had a great tour of the tuckaleechee caverns. Moose was our guide and he did a great job providing lots of info on the caverns and formations inside. This attraction is not for small children or people who have serious mobility issues. There are over 200 steps, slick and steep pathways that span over a mile. It was a beautiful place under the smokies. One of the largest caves in North America. Definitely put this on your list of stops! The only negative I have to say is that there are no COVID-19 precautions. None of the employees were wearing a mask and there was only one bottle of hang sanitizer. There were many high touch points through the cave that could easily be disinfected a couple times a day. Other than that no complaints

What a fantastic experience for our family! I would highly recommend this cave tour…not too long or strenuous and definitely unique/worth your time and cost. Our tour guide was super friendly and fun. Great place for kids, especially who love science. It literally felt like we walked from someone’s basement into another world. We also loved hearing the history of how it was found.

I'm conflicted in writing this review. We visited the Tuckaleechee Caverns in early September 2020. The caverns are beautiful, our guide was knowledgeable and funny. But it was very crowded and almost nobody including gift shop workers was wearing masks. We were trying to stay away from the crowd and thus we could barely hear our guide. Several times we were passed by other groups making social distancing impossible. It made us very uncomfortable even though we were wearing our masks. It would make sense to spread out the tours, so that groups wouldn't have to pass each other on the way in and out.
If you want to enjoy the Cavers, arrive early to be in the first group, wear a rain jacket and good hiking shoes. It's cold, wet and a bit slippery in the cave. And don't forget the tip for your guide.

Yes The caverns are beautiful and we are happy you continued. You could have got a refund if you thought you were in danger. We are glad you battled on to see our beautiful caverns. Read the box your masks were in. It says on the side "DOES NOT PREVENT COVID" . Its a shame that you gave us 3 of 5 because of a scare tactic causing you to think a mask is necessary. Think of kids and the mental effects it will indefinitely have seeing that they never see smiles.

Was the second time we have visited the caverns. Great activity when it’s hot out since it’s so cool underground.

Would normally give it 4 - 5 stars but was really bothered by their lack of recognition of the current situation. Yes, it’s a cave, some areas of the cave make social distancing difficult. But out of 6 guides I personally encountered, only one was masked (ours was not). There was no mention of practicing social distancing or masking and over half the guests did not wear them. Even those that had them with them did not wear them. The guides and staff, who move throughout the groups of 25+ guests talking loudly so everyone can hear, should be masked for the sake of their guests (considering how many people they are exposed to each day). Also, by not wearing a mask, the guides unknowingly communicate that it’s acceptable for the guests not to wear their masks as well.

No, it’s not the place of the business to force people to wear them, but it can be encouraged through their policy and their actions. Unfortunately, neither appears to be in place here. If you are concerned about social distancing and the spread of covid19, considering waiting until your next trip to the Smokies to see the caverns.

It is not mandatory in Blount county to wear a mask. Your social distance preference is your call. Also, your distancing from others can not be regulated by anyone other than you. We do not restrict masks at all.
