About
Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens have undergone a spectacular transformation and are being restored to their former glory. First laid out in 1804 in the 'picturesque' style of Humphry Repton, the famous Victorian landscape designer, the gardens had become derelict by 1996. There are 10 acres of gardens, included a 2 acre Walled Garden, fantastic valley gardens packed with unusual and interesting plants, flowering shrubs and trees; river and waterfalls. Home made cakes are served in the traditional Tea Room. Visitor Centre describing the history and restoration of the gardens. In 2017 open 12noon-5pm on Weds/Thurs/Suns in April; Tues/Weds/Thurs/Suns May-Sep; Weds/Thurs/Suns in October. Pre-booked private group tours by appointment.

- Climber1347675 contributionsAn enjoyable afternoon in the Spring sunshine. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit yesterday, venturing into areas we had not been in before. The waterfalls and pools were lovely after the heavy rain, blue bells on the banks, and lots of azaleas. In the formal garden the tulips were beautiful. Lots of bird song added to our experience.Thank you for your kind comments and we are delighted that you had a lovely afternoon exploring the gardens. It's a wonderful time of year to tickle all the senses with the sights, sounds and scents throughout the gardens.Written 18 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- Gill G1 contributionReally delightful gardensWe have visited these gardens several times and they never disappoint. There was lots of colour from rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and many more. This is a great garden, you can wander down amongst huge trees to a very pretty waterfall. Lots of very unusual plants. Bit of a struggle to get back up, but not to worry the tearooms are worth the trouble. Very peaceful and enjoyable.Thank you for your review. It is such a wonderful time of year, with so much colour. We are delighted that you enjoy visiting the gardens and seeing how they are evolving. The tea room is a great incentive when returning from the Lower Valley.Written 13 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 May 2024
- J P MLytham St Anne's, United Kingdom38 contributionsA HAVEN OF BEAUTY AND TRANQUILITYAbsolutely delightful, well-maintained, peaceful gardens. Never as crowded as an NT garden, this is a place to spend a few relaxing hours, savouring the tranquility. Lovely café with views over the garden. Will definitely come again. Be aware that the garden and paths down to the stream are sloping and are quite steep in places, so perhaps best to call for advice if you are a wheelchair user or are not as nimble on your pins as others may be.Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed savouring the tranquillity of the gardens. - jpcheshire1615Wilmslow, United Kingdom563 contributionsStunning hidden gardensWe spent several hours walking round the Hidden Gardens and enjoyed every minute. The gardens range from the very formal centre to the woodland on the edges. There were surprises at each bend in the paths, There are many unusual and interesting plants to see, some exotic and some from much closer to home. The bluebells under the trees were stunning. It must take a lot of work to make the woodland seem so natural. We are looking forward to going again on our next visit to Anglesey.Thank you for your review. Our staff love to share the gardens with visitors and it truly delights us when visitors enjoy themselves. The Valley Gardens are planted with the Picturesque in mind and as you rightly pointed out, each placement is considered to maintain the natural feel. - IanBradford, United Kingdom83 contributionsLovely gardenThis is a fantastic garden which is peaceful and tranquil. It’s amazing how well it has been restored in about 25 years. The cafe is also excellent with great food and friendly service. We also enjoy the fact that dogs are not allowed so there was no barking to upset the peace of the garden. I imagine the holiday cottages are good to but we will have to try that another time.Thank you for your review. It has taken many years and a lot of hard work from a small group of people to get to where we are today, but it is worth it to share the gardens with visitors from all over the world. If you enjoy the tranquillity, then you will love staying in one of the holiday cottages as cottage guests can explore the gardens outside public hours: I can say from experience that there is nothing quite like taking a stroll around the gardens as the sky transitions from blue to pink and gold; and the evening creature calls and the soft crunch of gravel are the only sounds in the world.Written 20 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024
- Carmela38 contributionsOne of the best gardens to visit in the UKThis is one of the best outdoor places to visit on Ynys Môn. It is beautiful! Happily stayed here for three hours with my family and had a lovely tea - would suggest getting in early if you want lunch as the cafe gets very busy. We were there on a Thursday when it opened and it was busy at 12:03pm. The staff are just lovely and really helpful, and the cafe and facilities are clean and the food good. The gardens are just amazing and the waterfalls, river and beautiful plants are so enchanting. I’d stay for longer next time. Would really recommend even if you’re not into gardens. I’d love to stay in the wonderful holiday cottages.Thank you for your kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed exploring the gardens; depending on the day, the tea room can be very busy. With the varied weather we've had recently, the gardens are looking great, especially if you're lucky enough to visit on a sunny afternoon.Written 10 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2024
- Andy IChester, United Kingdom49 contributionsFantastic afternoon outAbsolutely beautiful gardens, a real hidden gem. You have a choice of beautiful manicured formal gardens, jungle or wilderness all in one visit. Limited access for wheelchair users and those unsteady on feet but I walk with a stick and had no problems. There are well marked routes from yellow (wheelchairs and prams) blue (moderate with out steps, and red (more challenging).Thank you for your review. The physical geography of the gardens can make it challenging for visitors with limited mobility to explore to explore in their entirety, so we do what we can to inform visitors before they enter. The different areas offer something different, so I am delighted that you had no problem exploring them all.Written 8 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 June 2024
- Dawn5354Leeds, United Kingdom38 contributionsThe Hidden Gardens - visual treat!Plas Cadnant gardens are just lovely and will not dissapoint - if you can access a guided tour then so much the better although there is a useful map available at the entrance/visitor centre to guide you around the areas. The history of the estate is worth checking out and information is available in the display in the entrance/visitor area. There is a lovely cafe with good food at reasonable prices. Some of the wooded areas are challenging for those less mobile but for most can be accessed with care. The estate has evolved with care and foresight and is still being developed, the areas around the river and waterfalls is well worth the effort. Indeed the whole estate is a treat and an experience that should not be missed on any visit to Anglesey or the surrounding area.Thank you for your kind review. Throughout the summer we have weekly guided walks with our head gardener that, I agree, are not to be missed. We also have a programme of other walks throughout the season that offer something a little different for repeat visits. We always advise care when exploring the more challenging areas, but they certainly are worth the effort and a good excuse for a tasty treat when you return to the tearoom!Written 18 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 July 2024

Loads of plants, shrubs & flowers. There's a sunken pool and a waterfall. Good cafe. A real treasure of a place.Thank you for your review. We visited on a day where the gardens opened at noon and decided to have lunch first (choosing soup and a sandwich which was really good) which worked well as the cafe did get busy later and meant we then could take our time wandering through these wonderful gardens.
The border plantings were beautiful and we spent quite some time just watching the large number of bees and butterflies busy on the flowers, such amazing creatures.
It was a beautiful sunny day and we chatted with many of the other visitors all of whom were enjoying the experience as much as we were. We spoke to one lady who had visited earlier in the year when the bluebells were out and the leaves just starting to come out on the trees which of course was a totally different scene with the trees currently still in full leaf and ferns and bracken growing on the woodland floor. We hope to visit again in the spring to see the difference.
We loved following the paths to different features including a small waterfall, all in all a lovely visit.

Thank you for your review. The soup and sandwich is a good choice to set you up for some late summer exploring! I also love watching the bees and butterflies busily flitting from one flower to the next along the raised border. The gardens have been designed to have a long season of interest, so there's always something different to see and we look forward to welcoming you back in the Spring.

It was a beautiful garden we loved it. We spent £39 to get in. After we had looked around it began to rain so we went into the lovely tea room and spent £16 for coffee. We had our own picnic and when I asked if we could eat our sandwiches in the shaded area in the courtyard as it was pouring down ( not in the cafe ) we were told NO! No one else was there, we would have cleaned up after ourselves and I had my elderly parents and young children with us. We were very unimpressed with the response and we feel this is an oversight for the gardens. We did not feel very welcomed.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you found the gardens beautiful, but are sorry that you were disappointed with not being able to eat you picnic within our tea room area. The courtyard is part of our tea room sitting area and our policy (as is the case for most catering establishments) is that only food purchased from the tea room may be consumed on-site. Visitors are very welcome to enjoy their own picnics in our parkland.

Fabulous hidden garden with impressive approach and interesting history now being sympathetically restored by passionate owner. Very sunny day so lovely to stroll through the woodland walk to the river. Only disappointment was the fact that hot food is only available til 2pm so from 1.30 large queues built up and slow service. Cake and hot drinks served 12 til 5pm.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed exploring the gardens and are sorry that you were disappointed that light lunches are only served until 2.30pm. I have spoken with the catering team who confirm that despite additional staff, it was a busy afternoon. They did however highlight that just before 2.30pm a member of staff checked whether each customer in the queue wished to purchase any light lunches and none did. This is their standard practice when there are queues at 2.30pm as they do not wish for any customers to miss out due to queuing. The recent fine weather has been wonderful and we are glad that you were able to visit during the sunshine.

Had looked online before visit to plan times etc. Very easy to locate. Plenty of parking and entry hall was full of information boards. On the day we visited ..a Wednesday.. visitors can use Gardeners World 2 for 1 card.
There was delicious honey for sale too. After our walk around the different parts of the garden we had a delicious lunch bought from the cafe but eaten outside.

The delicious honey is produced locally using honey collected from hives at Plas Cadnant and I can't get enough of it! What a fantastic place! Stunningly beautiful gardens to wander about in. A wide range of different types of planting, including a lovely waterfall. On a gorgeous, sunny day it felt almost tropical. I absolutely loved it and will definitely be going again. Great cafe too. I recommend getting there for opening time (12 noon) as the cafe got very busy later on. Plenty of space to wander around the garden, though I imagine July/August will get very busy.

Thank you for your review. The Lower Valley in particular can feel quite tropical; it actually has it's own microclimate that allows us to grow certain plants that we would otherwise be unable to grow. Our catering team will be delighted that you enjoyed the tearoom and we look forward to welcoming you back.

I’ve bought a season pass here every year since it opened to the public. I arrived a bit early one day so decided to walk my dog along the drive on a short lead to tire her out before I was able to go into the gardens and get some lunch. I’ve always been told before that I can take my dog on the parklands, and I always have walked up and down the drive. However on this occasion the owner started yelling at me aggressively from his car that I shouldn’t be there. I hurried on with my dog eager to get back to the safety of my car only to find him there waiting for me, I expected him to have a go at me again but he did then apologise. But I won’t be returning. I don’t expect to be yelled at. It was frightening. It’s not right for a man to approach a woman on her own and intimidate her.

Firstly, I wish to highlight that your initial review was removed by TripAdvisor for violating their guidelines, and you have reposted an identical review. As we are unable to flag this a second time we will instead clarify the events you are referring to.
You refer to an interaction between yourself and the owner, not only outside our opening times, but on a day that we were closed to the public. As you were on private property, having passed “closed today” and “private road” signs, the owner was within his rights to ask what you were doing and advise you that the gardens were closed. The owner is well known for his polite, courteous & temperate manner which does not fit with your version of events on that day. The owner is security conscious and is concerned about unauthorised trespassingand he in fact felt very intimidated by your actions.
Our season tickets only allow access to the gardens and grounds during our public open times. As mentioned you attempted to access the grounds outside of these times which is why you were challenged.
Finally, I wish to highlight that TripAdvisor is intended as a site to review attractions, venues and locations. Your review relates to an unauthorised attempt to access the grounds outside of business hours and a subsequent personal attack on the owner resulting in its removal from TripAdvisor upon its initial posting. It is disappointing you have chosen to violate their guidelines a second time but I feel this speaks volumes for the validity of your claims.

What a fabulous place for an afternoon out. The car parking is extensive with more than enough room for all. We entered the site and as we were trying to orientate ourselves we met the owner who showed us the facilities and walked us to the start of his suggested path around the gardens. The gardens are a mixture of manicured formal areas and more rugged areas with lots of seating all the way round. The cafe is fine with a nice selection of food and drink. The only problem with our visit was that a heavy shower forced virtually everyone into the cafe at the same time so it became very crowded with a long queue. Overall we would recommend Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens if you want an excellent afternoon in a beautiful setting.

The hidden gardens are a delight & the staff extremely helpful & informative, especially the gardener, up a ladder, trimming the foliage in the walled garden! The scones are a credit to the bakers & the jam tasted homemade, too. The gardens looked amazing; very well kept & we loved the topiary & the BIG apples. Giving apples away free was a lovely touch.
Minor negatives, having read others’ reviews: the main lunch meals in the cafe seem a bit overpriced & the admission fee for fit people, too, compared with similar venues. As Historic Houses members we got in free with cards, but as I am still recovering from hip fractures 6 months ago, I attempted the blue route with walking poles but was struggling. Can appreciate someone in a wheelchair finding it difficult to see very much beyond walled garden. (Think National Trust admit disabled & carers free?) I do note that, on the website, it stresses that much is not suitable for disabled access but feel this may be overlooked.
Overall - a great place & a credit to the owner & staff. Good luck for the remaining renovation plans.

My wife and I spent just over a couple hours in these lovely gardens and restaurant.
A leisurely walk around the gardens will take between 1-2 hours more if you stop for a snack, ice cream or lunch.
Some parts are only accessible via steps or relatively steep slopes. This is explained in the maps provided on entry, a very peaceful setting and is truly as described a 'hidden' gem.

Even though we visited on a rainy day which got worse and worse we had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
We would have taken much more time than the hour and a half to linger and thoroughly appreciate these stunning gardens which really reminded me of a smaller version of Bodnant Gardens.
It was so bad we were given a laminated map of the grounds, what a marvellous idea.
Wish I could have bought some plants, but just wasn't practical for us being so wet and being on a mini break in Angelsey.
Gardeners World 2 for 1 are only accepted on certain days, so check GW website 1st.

I would like to know if dogs are allowed in Hidden gardens
Written 27 June 2018

Hello,
Visitors are welcome to exercise dogs on a lead in our extensive parkland - they need to be kept on a lead as we have sheep and lambs on the land. Only assistance dogs are permitted in the gardens and Tea Room. Our historic gardens have feature topiary which is vulnerable to dog urine, so for this reason we regret we do not allow dogs within the Hidden Gardens.
Parking is available in the shade of trees (to the right of the main parking area as you approach) and we provide water by the entrance.

Would a couple of doddery eighty year olds be able to walk around? They're not very good with steep slopes.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,
The Gardens are situated in a valley, so much of the land is sloping to a degree, but the Walled Garden is accessible to all and the Upper Valley has a few slightly steeper slopes that can be avoided. The Lower Valley is the steepest area of the Gardens and I would advise avoiding if slopes are difficult, but we do have a few viewpoints overlooking the Lower Valley that can be reached by gently to moderate slopes.
We do offer a half price rate (£3.50) for visitors with limited mobility. We do advise visitors to explore the Gardens at their own pace and we have benches placed at regular intervals throughout the Gardens.
I hope the above information is helpful and please don't hesitate to contact us should you require any further assistance.
