About
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, is a 17,000 square-foot museum offering interactive exhibits, videos, vintage musical instruments used to create the Stax sound, stage costumes, photographs, records, and approximately 3,000 other items of memorabilia that tell the unique story, from beginning to present, of American soul music, particularly that of Stax Records and the Memphis Sound.Artists highlighted include Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, the Bar-Kays, Booker T. & the MGs, Johnnie Taylor, Little Milton, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, and hundreds of others. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have special safety precautions in place, such as mandatory mask-wearing for all employees and guests, social distancing, no large groups, and, for now, cashless transactions only.

If you care at all about music this is must see!

We followed other reviews and chose to visit this site. That was a great highlight of our trip through multiple states!! The museum has a great presentation that explains soul music in a way that I could not, plus chronicles how it fit in the 60s turmoil. I particularly enjoyed being able to see much of the equipment from that time preserved, including the organ used for the hit "Green Onions".

Getting it all together, yes they did!

This is a great museum! I'm 68 and I didn't have any trouble reading the info so I'm not sure what the others are talking about. Also because of my age these are the artists I grew up loving! Displays are well organized and it flows easily. I recommend watching Summer of Soul (currently on Hulu) before or after your visit. All the staff here were super nice and welcoming. This is my second visit here and I would come again because they add to and change the displays. I've been to Sun studios twice too and if I could only go to one it would be Stax!!

Simply Outstanding

You will learn so much here. It was our first stop and that really helped put everything in historical context. Also, the front desk staff and security here are excellent.

Fine, But ...

I want to echo what some others are saying. It's a very nice museum, but there is an awful lot of reading to do. It wasn't always easy to do, too may people or glare on glass or the writing wasn't big enough.

This was an excellent tour. I gave it a 4-star because it was self guided. I know that I would have of benefited from a tour guides knowledge. There was lots of information to read, but sometimes it was hard to see.

Do not miss this

Very friendly staff greeted us and had my name down as I had pre-purchased our tickets. Terrific and important short film about Soul Music and its contributions to life as we know it. A lot of wonderful history is on display. The reproduction of the original studio right down to the sloping floor was a high point for me. A shame it's not being used as a working studio now though. Anyplace that has Isaac Hayes' Eldorado on a spinning turntable is a must see.

Lots of great history and memorabilia.

It was as larger than I thought with a short film and excellent memorabilia including Isaac Hayes Cadillac and stage clothes. Easy free parking and a great restaurant nearby called Soul Fish Cafe. Made for a great day.

Musical history!

I really enjoyed my visit at the Stax Museum. Walking in immediately took my back in time. Hearing the music, seeing the artists, and reading the history of Stax was phenomenal. If you’re visiting Memphis, be sure this stop is on your itinerary.

BEST THING TO DO IN MEMPHIS! THE REASON TO VISIT MEMPHIS
Jul 2021
This was so much more amazing than I had expected (and I was looking forward to going)! The amount of interviews, musical excerpts and performances you see, historical details. We spent 4 hours and still didn't read every thing or listen to every interview. Did I mention they have a dance floor for you to join the Soul Train show? YES I did dance! This is one of the best museums/tours/things I have ever done. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES MUSIC. The music is still drifting through my head, bringing a smile to my face. This tour is 1 million times better than the Sun Records tour (which we also did). I will have to go back to finish reading and seeing the spots I missed. And when it is over, they have a store where you can buy vinyl records of this amazing music! Visitors included families and couples .

Their technology was down on a Tuesday morning. So we went to Sun Records instead and enjoyed the tour there. I must say the employees at Stax weren’t apologetic about the inconvenience. Bummer.
