Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Although the museum is small, care has been taken to display lots of interesting exhibits, covering local wildlife, architecture and social history, documents etc. The entry price is very reasonable. The museum is largely run and staffed by volunteers. The visit was very enjoyable.

Brilliant, very well curated. The flow through the different exhibits works so well and they've totally mastered keeping kids interested - it's the first time in years I've had time to read about the different exhibits in a museum without being mithered to move on by a child. There's a whole nature section where you are able to pick up and handle items. My son is 8 and he loved it. The staff (who are very friendly) obviously put a lot of effort in and it shows. We've been to lots of local museums and I found this to be one of the best. I would encourage anyone visiting Bute to include this in their itinery.

This museum really lets you imagine how people lived on the island around 5,000 years ago, up to the present day. Many of the views will not have changed in that time and the museum helped me to understand what life might have been like for the inhabitants.
The natural history section lets you see the wildlife up close, something that would be unlikely to happen in reality and I loved the wildflower display- learning the names of plants in the hedgerow and I've now managed to spot a few of them whilst out on walks.

We visited with our four year old who was very excited to find all the pirate coins hiding in the exhibition - a fab idea which kept him entertained.
A lot of museums have large spaces but this one is petite but filled just perfectly.
The guy who was on was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and really went out of his way to ensure we had a wonderful visit. We will definitely be back!

We’ve been visiting this museum as a family for several years now, and the kids love it. The staff are so friendly, and are willing to give you any additional information and history about the island. Entry is free for children, and they have a gift shop that ranges from kids toys to gemstones etc. There’s plenty to see, and the children love the touch table. Quite often the museum has quizzes and competitions available for children visiting, that consist of going from cabinet to cabinet and finding certain hidden things, which results in prizes at the end. Again, the staff are lovely, and I couldn’t recommend this museum more if you’re visiting and wanting to kill some time.

This is one of those traditional local museums that strives to provide an overview of the natural and human history of its locale. I think it succeeds quite well. Even though there are but two rooms, these are well-stocked with, on the one side, historical artefacts ranging from the Neolithic to the twentieth century and, on the other, stuffed animals, shells and rocks that have some connexion with the island. Everything is explained in great detail.
Do not expect new-fangled interactive technology; the Bute Museum is an old-school establishment that keeps the interested visitor occupied for about an hour or so, perhaps two hours if you read the card with every single exhibit.
Good, decent, worth a visit if you are in the area.

This was a great museum for a historian interested in local history. It was presented in what could be called the standard form which for me sums up the character of the place using artefacts, photos and captions. After 90 minutes I retired and will certainly return next time I am in Rothesay.

Just two rooms with natural history and local history of the island. Didn’t take us long to see it all but enjoyed the old photos. It was only four quid but that seemed slightly overpriced for what you got. The chap on the desk was friendly though.

We went in here to pass the time. It is lovely that this wee island has a museum like this. Saw some interesting yet bizarre artifacts. Not sure if its the sort of place to visit more than once but give it a go if you are there. All money goes to a good fund.
