Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is an amazing place on the Isle of Skye. The cemetery is not well signposted and it has some interesting stories to tell. It’s easy to walk around and the paths are well trodden. Just make sure you watch where you place your feet. This is an idyllic part of the world and very peaceful.

I was staying just over the bridge so took an evening stroll around the small ilse. You really get a feeling of walking in the footsteps of people a long long time ago, very enchanting. Mostly overgrown and ruins but some still remain preserved. I really took to this place, enough benches where you can stop and just take in the scenery and atmosphere, with the sound of the river in the background. Quite magical

Since we were staying about a mile away we figured we’d try to give a little more direction on how to get to this little island with the knight’s effigy and other old graves. From Portree head towards Carbost on A87 to A850 towards Skeabost. Watch for a sign that says Tote 1 (mile). You will turn right there and immediately go over a wide cattle grid. Take your first left and another left. In front of you, you will see a car bridge. Park before it off the road. Walk towards the bridge and on the right you will see a path to the walking bridge to the island. It is a small island so you will easily find the knight’s effigy. We wore boots but didn’t need them. It’s been dry and didn’t see signs of animal droppings.

A very interesting place, well worth going to.

Would suggest that prior to going you read up on it to appreciate what it's about and what you can find there.

Beautiful spot, ruins, ancient graves. You need good directions to get there but it's an interesting spot with lovely views of the river. Go visit.

For those who enjoy exploring well-hidden ancient ruins and walking among fascinating tombstones that span centuries, then St. Columba's Isle is well worth a visit. I especially marvel at seeing sculptured medieval graveslabs of carved knights lying in their original locations.

Our own visit to the isle came after seeing the much more impressive St. Finnan's Isle (aka Eilean Fhianain) in Loch Shiel, so St. Columba's Isle made less of an impression on us. But whereas we needed to hire a boat to take us to St Finnan's Isle, you can park close and walk over a footbridge to get to St. Columba's Isle. I also loved the charm of the Skeabost Bridge.

Follow the directions on the website. You must drive in from the east, as the Skeabost Bridge is closed to cars. There is one parking spot next to a very, very worn "River Snizort" sign. From there, the path to St. Columba's Isle is well marked. There are other paths to other ancient sites from there as well.

We had a great local guide who explained the historical significance of this small island on an island. It is believed that the Picts considered this area sacred, but the artifacts are from the time of St. Columba. Columba was thrown out of Ireland and crossed the Irish Sea via rowboat to the Isle of Skye in the 500s BCE. Columba protested the corrupt monasteries of Ireland and was banished. The island is home to Nicholson’s Aisle a fairly well preserved building which holds the remains of 28 chiefs of the Nicholson clan.

Excellent historic site. Many chiefs buried here, of the MacNichol clan. Quiet. Free parking close to the burial ground.

Easy access to an ancient burial ground. Overgrown markers and effigies added to the feeling of a graveyard forgotten.

Peaceful, secluded, easy walking and great views of the river Snizort. Interesting history but not a lot of information there.
