A must see place. But I suggest to have waterproof boots on and a jacket what you don't mind to be a wee bit smoky, as the fire is on in the house. Public transport from Stornoway is fine and cheap.

The trip to the the Blackhouses was lovely. The scenery getting there os gorgeous and the little villages are picture perfect. The actual houses were very cool and it was interesting to compare to other similar housing forms. Worth a visit.

I could have spent more time here exploring the buildings. I left this to the last moment and regret having to rush round. The staff were lovely and happy to see you. There is parking and a small shop.

It's great to see how people lived. There was a peat fire lit and it showed how cosy but dark and smoky it was. The little shop and visitor centre is handy too, both for info and loo stop

Arnol blackhouse is one of my favourite sites on Lewis. The house has been left exactly as it was lived in in the 60s by the last inhabitant. A peat fire burns inside and the smell of peat smoke permeates the building, evoking centuries of...More

The blackhouse had a real peat fire going when I visited here and it was really interesting to see how people lived, and how hard life was, on Lewis within living memory.

Loved seeing this place. It really gave you a glimpse of how people lived.. I have asthma and lasted about 10 seconds before I had to leave. I'd go again.

School was over 40 years ago when we learned about crofts and crofting and the Blackhouse brought everything into life. The peat fire and smoke, the dark interior, area for cattle and the family. The White House opposite is also fascinating but from a later...More

This is an excellent illustration of island living conditions, There ruins of blackhouses throughout Lewis and Harris but this is in excellent shape and the peat fire is still burning!
