Enjoy a beautiful new museum set in the stunning Castle Grounds in Stornoway. Discover the distinctiveness of the Outer Hebrides, shaped by a unique combination of land, sea and people, and view our islands as never before in a wrap-around audio-visual presentation. Hear from islanders in a series of videos and audio interviews about the Gaelic language, work, religion, emigration and community. Brilliant museum which gives a good slice of Island life. Great to hear Scottish Gaelic being spoken. Highlight for me was the chessmen. However it begs the question of why 82 of these Lewis chessmen are in London(England). I believe they should mostly be here...More

Due to being on a tight time schedule, only really had time to see the chessman. But more than worth it, they are incredible. The expressions carved into the faces are fabulous.

Interesting look into island culture, people and history. Good way to spend a wet afternoon. Wish more of the castle was open!

Really cool exhibits focusing on Lewis and Harris. Interactive ways of sharing information, like a room where you sit in the middle and the three walls around you stream time-lapse video of locations on the Isle. You feel like you are there!

Having read Chessmen book by Peter May we wanted to see the real thing on our tour around the Outer Hebrides. We discovered that some of the pieces were being displayed at the Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway and I was thrilled to see them....More
