Not all the shops sell tourist junk, some are for locals. Thursday night in summer from 6pm to 9pm, 7th street is sealed off and a party ensues with a live band. Watch the locals line dance.

Downtown Rapid City is mainly Main St and Market Square with a bunch of good restaurants, nice shops, pubs and cafeterias. Parking at night is free.

We spent a short amount of time here seeing the city on our way back after seeing the Badlands. Beautiful city. Enjoyed seeing some of the extraordinary art work on the Presidential sculptures.

I was very surprised at the statues all over the sidewalks everywhere you looked. It is just a very beautiful place with lots of history. A must to spend a week at just for the downtown.
