A brand new building in 2015, amazing views of the Open Cut, surface tours of the old Homestake Mine and the current operations of the Sanford Underground Research Facility! The exhibits are beautiful and scenery is amazing!

What an interesting place. While hated to see what open pit mining does to the landscape, the story behind the mining was fascinating. And now the facility has been turned into a scientific research facility. Really interesting!! Take the time to stop here.

Toured the museum and then went on the trolley and toured the facilities. Was very impressed with the center and all the building. We had a wonderful guide and driver who shared a lot of information. Would recommend this if you are in Lead.More

Took the wrong way our of Deadwood and ended up in Lead. Saw the visitors center and decided we had time to stop. High point is the layout of the mine tunnels and shafts. Looks like a lot of material was removed.More

This is a small but very informative museum about gold mining in Lead, SD. The must-see item is the model in the center of the room that depicts the underground tunnel and shaft system. Lead is definitely a bigger town underground than above!More

Truly worth a visit if you are in the area. Amazing how deep the tunnels go! Seeing into the open pit mine is a pretty unique experience.

The Homestake Mine talk was so interesting. Amazing how much information we learned about the mining. Went with a homeschool group so the kids had lots of questions. Staff very knowledgeable and made it fascinating for the kids.

Hello! We do not have gold panning right here at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, but just 2 blocks up the street at the Black Hills Mining Museum, you can. Gold panning is also available at the Broken Boot Gold... More
