Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We traveled with pets and found accommodations appropriate and plenty to do for 2 days. Be aware there are no grills near the lodge rooms and you cannot use your own in the area, you have to go to the community grilling area. Restaurant food is AWFUL and bland, overpriced, Thankfully we only planned one meal there and brought food. Great canoeing and fishing.

This review is strictly for the campground.

This park is a golf resort. Golf courses looks fine as well at the lodging. Restaraunt was popular with locals Sunday after church.

The campgound however is VERY neglected. Horrible road and I would never take my travel trailer back in there. I would say this is the worse campground in the SC State Park System. Many sites are permantly closed. I am guessing it was easier to close them down than it was to maintain them.

They need to shut the campground down, rehabilitate it, then open back up. Done right I think it would be a popular campground with all that the park offers.

My husband and I take a five month cross country tour every year. Hickory Knob is the only campground we have repeated. Sites are large with picnic table and fire pit . Staying in a site right on the lake is best. Beautiful views! Challenging and reasonably priced golf course on premises. Restaurant has a very good buffet. Definitely an upgrade to a traditional state park. Lots of water activities. Kayak rentals and fishing gear available. Boat launch too. Cannot wait to come back!

The course is a very interesting and challenging Tom Jackson layout. Owned and operated by the Georgia State Parks department. (sadly)
The course is quite picturesque. It is relatively inexpensive to play here and tee times are relatively easy to get. However, the course conditions range from quite poor to somewhat moderate, depending on the year. (yes year) Some years the course is ok. I played it several times when I came away sanctified. Last year it was horrible. I last played it in October(2022) and the greens were un-puttable. There is much "encroachment" from old growth Hickorys and oaks that moderately impacts the white tees and greatly impacts the blue tees. This is sad because the design is superb.

At age 40, the golf course is in desperate need of improvements. Problem #1 revolves around the fact when the greens were switched back from bentgrass to bermuda in 1993 (gee, now the entirety of Jordan Spieth's life time!!) as it was just prior to the era which saw the emergence of the drastically improved bermuda in the form of TifEagle, Mini-Verde, Champions, etc, etc) so Hickory Knob has been stuck ever since with the grainy, slow old timey bermuda. One would think by now the state would come up with enough money to change the greens if nothing else......not to mention new sand for the bunkers, new cart paths , etc, etc. I could overlook that if they could renovate the greens. In its salad days of the mid 1980's this place was maintained almost to the level of a private country club. Really sad what has transpired since.

We drove past the golf course on the way to the park office and the course looked in good shape. Arriving at the office revealed a large office with, part-time restaurant, rental rooms and a lodge for visitors. Much of the rooms faced right out toward the big lake. We were told that colleges bring their golf teams here for tournaments and stay in the lodge, rooms, or barracks.

On 8/17/22, my wife and I drove through Hickory Knob's campground. The road through the campground was gravel and horrible. The campsites were even worse. If it wasn't for the electric and water outlets, we would not have known there was a campsite. It was covered with pine needles, and we are assuming the pads were dirt since we didn't see any gravel or concrete. The road had sharp fall offs with no timbers to warn people.
I did not go into the restrooms; but, based on the disrepair of the campground, I would not expect anything better.

This campground is an embarrassment to our state. Forget camping tourism.

Attractive park.. was nice to visit and relax. The lady at the front desk was super helpful- explained a lot about the park. Gift shop was nice and the restaurant looked clean and positive. We were there for a few hours= hiked around the trails. Very nice. The big lodge room was nice to relax in. Drove by the golf course- appeared to be busy. Loved the historic house on the grounds. Might come back to try the lodge or maybe even camp!

Mediocre at best. Dining hall is buffet only and not open during the week (even though the website said they have breakfast, lunch & dinner server). There are no grills or fire pits for the lodge rooms (which are both on the map and website buy isnt accurate). Nothing nearby. Some lodge rooms are updated and ok but not worth the money. The campground looked great and the lake is beautiful. Call ahead so you know what you are getting into.

Awesome skeet shooting experience for some novice skeet shooters! The park rangers working with us Kaelyn (sp?) and Katie were patient with us and the pointers they gave us helped us hit a clay pigeon every now and then! The cost per person is reasonable considering they provide the shotguns, 25 shells per person, the clay pigeons, eye and hearing protection and instruction too! I am so glad they asked if we preferred 20 gauge or 12 gauge as the 20 gauge was nice and the 12 gauge would have been tough. I recommend shooting 20 gauge unless you are an experienced shotgun shooter as it does not kick near as much.
We stayed at the lodge so we could keep our dog with us. You have to keep your dog on a leash while in the park and you can't leave your dog alone in the room but that is not a hardship since we are used to our dog going with us or someone taking the dog for a walk while we are doing various things. The lodge rooms are nice and clean. don't leave the balcony door open or you will have bugs in your room - we had to clear out some daddy longlegs (only 4 of them) and after that, we were good. I love the adirondack double chairs on the porch.
We got breakfast at the restaurant right next to the office each morning and got our coffee there also. It was reasonably priced, good and you just have to pick it up to go right now.
We were disappointed the archery range was closed while we were there. I think it was because of staff shortages, but we borrowed horse shoes and played some horse shoes, although it was a challenge to find the horse shoe pits, which are near the basketball court on the side away from the parking lot there. We looked up how to keep score with our phones and modified the rules slightly and then went at it. The Beaver run trail was a good 2.5 miles one way and we returned the same way for a challenging hike only because of the 5 mile distance. The trail is fairly level the entire way with just a few insignificant changes in elevation every now and then. Our last night we went to a local brewery just across the lake in Georgia (about 15 minutes away) and had a great time with live music! We planned to canoe, play golf and hike the other two trails but will have to come back for all of that. I love the way our state parks in South Carolina are making it possible to take our dog with us! This is a game changer for us as we will visit with the entire family much more often over the coming years.
