What people are saying
Beautiful park but rude rangers ruin the experience. :(

My rating is based on the Park Rangers that oversee this park, not the facility itself. Horseshoe Falls is a beautiful gem that we have always enjoyed, but the rangers based here are making it impossible to support this great park. We not only have a SC Park Pass, but we still choose to pay an additional admission here because we want to support our local State Park. Last year there was an older lady who was the ranger and my husband and I watched her yell and scream at families with small children and tell them to leave right at 6:00. While I understand the park itself closes at 6:00, when you have kids playing in the river it may be a couple minutes to wrap up and get everyone ready to leave. Not only did she yell at them, but she stood on the walkway fussing to everyone who would listen how she couldn't stand people who don't follow the rules. After watching her do this multiple times over the summer, we finally stopped coming to Horseshoe Falls. We came back this year a few weeks ago and there is a younger male ranger who seemed much nicer. Today I watched him run off a couple with their dog right at 6:00. Horseshoe Falls used to close at sundown and none of the locals understand why they changed it to 6pm. The river is wide open with no gates restricting access. Why chase off people who are trying to support and enjoy their local State Park? This is the last time we will ever purchase a SC Park Pass.

Admission/State Park Pass is Now required. The small visitor center has a big table diorama of the battlefield. A 6 min. audio describes the movement of troops with moving colored lights for each army. It's not really a museum but has some gift sales. There was 1 men's and 1 women's toilet at the visitor center. At this time, there didn't appear to be any other toilet facilities/porta johns on either loop of the park, including by the falls. In this critical time of Social Distancing, the parking lot by the visitor center was only allowing 16 vehicles and only 10 vehicles by the falls. The entrance for the 1.3 mile "educational Battlefield loop" is from Horseshoe Falls Rd. There is a good sidewalk - less than 1/4 mile long - from this parking lot to view the falls but the trails are not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, or bikes. People in moderate health can tackle this trail (lots of roots, a few stairs, not much for hills). The 1 mile British Camp trail is a few miles away on State Park Rd. by the Visitor Center but there are only a couple of info. signs on this moderately easy path.
The falls were packed with people on Memorial Day weekend. The Park Ranger had to corral a couple of groups of about 40 peope just to get off the ledge of rocks. There is a small beach area at low water times but that was also packed.
People PLEASE be kind and respectful of the Rangers. They shouldn't have to feel like they are risking their lives trying to keep us safe!

We went with the dog on a lovely walk at Historic Musgrove Mill site. The walk at the main sight (State park Road) was a quiet, well marked, circular one-way walk partly along the river. There were places to rest along the way with a handful of information placards. There is also an information center and several restrooms. We then took a short drove to Horseshoe Falls Road to see the quaint Horseshoe falls which is only a short walk from the parking. There was also another hike available there we didn’t do but hope to come back to another time.

The last time I was there, I was not a happy camper. I found the signage confusing and was irritated that I had walked around looking for the trail to Gordon's Falls (which was down the street). Frankly, I was a little grumpy because it was almost the first hike since I had broken my ankle and all the walking made it sore. I will mention that a ranger reached out to me and asked me to come in and tell them more about my experience. And I should have done that. But I didn't.

This time I came and the signs were clear and concise. The only complaint was the information was on the back of the sign. But it was there. Can't help but wonder if I missed it the first time, but I don't think so. This time I was there to hike the British Camp trail. A great trail, but I suggest bug spray. The trail barely covered the British camp, so I think it is misnamed but other than that I was pleased that it was not a difficult trail, and easy to follow the blazes and signs. There were several educational signs and a couple of benches (more please-it would be nice to sit in the foods and enjoy the sounds).

So bravo. It's nice to see a place where the trail is easy to follow and the signs are easy to read. The only suggestion I would make is to put some of the directional information on the front. Just in case people don't think of looking on the back.

Great hike and history! This spot is actually 2 great hikes. Start at the visitors center and walk the pretty easy mill and camp site. Then, drive about a mile up the toad to the battlefield site and hike that one. It’s a little longer and includes Horseshoe Falls. Good interpretive signs and clearly marked trail. Not crowded at all! The visitors center at the Musgrove Mill site is very nice. Also, you pay at one spot and that tag lets you hike both places. Good for families too. Picnic tables at center.

The first civil war in South Carolina took place during the Revolutionary War when Tories were pitted against Patriots. After English soldiers overtook Charleston, SC and headed northwest, they encountered fierce resistance from local militias. Musgrove Mill was the site of a lopsided victory by Patriots who used impromptu tactics and knowledge of terrain to overcome numerical inferiority.

The visitor center lies near the ruins of the Musgrove home and the Enoree River. Here you will see centuries-old exotic Osage Orange trees which served as hedgerows for pasturing cattle. As it turns out, the visitor center is a favorite spot for migrating big brown bats to rear their young. Dawn, the park manager, has acquired expertise in bat biology of necessity, and may show you the bat baby saver tool that she keeps at the ready in her office if you inquire. You are guaranteed to see bats at twilight during bat nursery season, but only if enough folks sign up at the visitor center desk for an after hours presentation. Nothing personal, but I think Dawn is a little batty.

The visitors center of Musgrove State Historical Park contains a well documented presentation of the historical importance of the revolutionary war battle which happened there. In addition, the park contains good recreational facilities for familites. The park is located maybe ten miles outside of Clinton, SC and reached over pleasantly rolling, country roads.

I've gone past Clinton probably 100 times but never knew about this state park - full of revolutionary war history. You'll learn a lot of stuff from the patient and friendly park ranger in the visitor center. And you can walk their hiking trail - which I found to be astonishingly easy. When you hike it, you can see why the British valued this location.

We were quite disappointed in the hiking trails. The information sheet said "Easy." NOT. There were a lot of hills, LOTS or raised roots and stumps on trail. The trail was not well maintained. We are used to trails in NC and Tennessee. They are excellent. So far, our experiences in SC state parks are not the best.

As Americans we tend to forget much of our important history. Musgrove Mill preserves a part of our American Revolutionary war legacy which we need to remember - how Americans fought each other.

More Revolutionary War battles were fought in SC than any of the other 13 colonies. While our War Between The States sites have gotten more attention, the Revolution is gaining. Musgrove Mill is a beautifully maintained site that has excellent parking and facilities. Ranger James is knowledgeable and very pleasant to visit with. The visitor's center has an electric map that explains the action to even the most casual observer. There are two trails; one north and one south of the Enoree River. The south trail takes the visitor along the river bank and through the area where the mill originally stood as well as where the British soldiers camped. The north trail, with a separate entrance two miles up the state road, takes the visitor to Horseshoe Falls and along a 1.5 mile battlefield trail. The trail has several interpretive markers that explain the action. The key terrain feature in the battle, an Indian field that had gone fallow, is no longer in existence. The area is now a stand of oaks, however an attentive eye to the terrain gives the visitor a good understanding of the tactical situation. Horseshoe Falls is a great photographic location, offering very accessible falls.
