Overview
More
NMAC is the only full-time, year-round, independent institution devoted to the display, preservation and study of (antique) American woven coverlets. The Museum is open seven days a week. Each visitor is given a personal tour.Currently, the (500-plus) collection includes coverlets made between 1771 and 1889. Exhibitions change periodically. Generally there are about 80 coverlets on display along with "period" beds and bedding, and spinning and weaving equipment including looms and a (rare) Jacquard head. We are located in a former Common School building (dating to 1859) in the historic district of downtown Bedford, PA.

We stopped to have my wifes great great grandmothers coverlet evaluated. Melinda and her husband were very helpful in providing information on the age and weaver who could have made this coverlet.

While visiting Bedford I enjoyed the local shops and then asked where the Coverlet Museum was. This is a good place that teachers can take children for field trips. A room near the back shows what is done with the flax plant, seeds, and how...More

Driving on I 70/76 and wife suggested a break by stopping here. In an 1800s old school; although a visit was short - I found it interesting for the old Americana. She found the coverlet display spectacular. (She is a weaver / fibers fan.) The...More

Who knew there was a museum on coverlets? And that the cards that enabled weavers to create these spreads were one of the inspirations for the modern computer? Yes, they will tell you these things-- and show off their collection. We got a personal tour,...More

This Museum, housed in a beautiful old school built in the 1800s, is such a gem. American Coverlets are a little known but outstanding example of early American craftsmanship. These coverlets that are beautifully displayed are sophisticated works of art. The museum and the tour...More
