Overview

Bedford County is blessed with 14 covered bridges. Built approximately 100 years ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, these structures withstand the rain, snow and hard use of the traveling public. The county's bridges range in length from the 136 foot Herline Bridge near Manns Choice, PA to the 56 foot Palo Alto bridge south of Hyndman. Twelve spans are Burr-truss bridges, named after their designer, Theodore Burr. These bridges are held in place by a set of trusses that interact with the arch that spans the length of the bridges, creating added strength. A lot of people ask, "Why did they cover the bridges?". One answer is that wooden bridges with exposed superstructures can rot ... covering and roofing them protects them from the weather so they'll last longer.

We did this scavenger hunt as Family Fun. With a little help from GPS and WAZ we found four. If you find Colvin Covered Bridge (our favorite) you are near a buffalo farm.

Quaint covered bridges abound. You may find old grist mills too. Pick up a brochure or go to the website for self guided covered bridge tours.

I would have to be a lot more bored than I've ever been to "take this tour." I have seen nearly all the bridges on individual excursions. One or two covered bridges would last me a lifetime just not enough variety to travel such a...More

Single lane old wooden bridge. Beautiful location over a river with beautiful scenery. Nice place to take pictures and think of a wooden bridge that still works over a 100 years old.

There are a few options to the loop. My girlfriend and I found one online that gave clear directions and took us to nine of the fourteen bridges in the area. It was a great way to spend an afternoon!

The directions on the county website and spot on, the bridges are very cool. It takes a couple of hours to do it right, but it's all thru some beautiful farm land

FYI...the Bridge #'s on the maps, don't correspond to the #'s on the bridges that do have engraved plates. We were exasperated and lost on little 2 lane roads until we figured that out. ...then we were just lost.
