The exhibit was so good, we went back a second time.
We saw their special exhibition American Perspectives, featuring over seventy significant works from NYC's American Folk Art Museum’s collection. There were so many enchanting and fascinating pieces in the form of quilts, paintings, prints, sculptures, papier-mache, primitive painted boxes, and so on. The canvas made of broken pieces from antique wooden chairs was especially intriguing.

    Nice Variety
I really enjoyed my time at the art museum on a rainy afternoon. The native american exhibits were unique. I enjoyed the digital artificial intelligence display, which I've never seen before. They had a good collection of European and modern art also. I spent about 2 hours here.

    Enjoyable stop
This is a good tourist stop. I didn’t spend too long there - I want to say the spent an hour or so looking through the works. Some were pretty impressive. It’s undergoing a major facelift so I’m guessing it will better in a year or so once the transition is complete and more exhibits are in place.

    Nice variety of art
An interesting mix of art. We appreciated the native art the best. There seem to be a lot of twists, turns and stairs that lead to something new. Some spaces get a bit crowded when the entrance to the room is small, and its a long narrow room. It seems to be a busy place with groups singing etc.

Portland has been one of the Premier Cities of the West Coast since the 1860s. You would assume that the city art museum would feature an impressive collection of art. Considering the age of the City, the local Art Museum is mighty sad.

The core of collection was contributed by a wealthy family. The museum guides politely say the collection was "self curated". Th8s means that the collection was gathered by the name of the artist - and not by the artistic merit of the individual pieces. There is a "Van Gogh", but nothing like his popular paintings. A sad little donkey in blacks and dark browns.

If you have any kmowledge of art history, this collection will be extremely disappointing. I personally do not recommend this collection

My main complaint is that they charged full fare for daily admission when only one exhibit was open due to construction. The exhibit was well done and enjoyable but not worth $25 admission.

How is this museum nervy enough to charge full price for access to 1/3 of the actual museum? Disgraceful. Greedy. I saw no disclaimer online when I purchased my tickets, either. Why does Portland have to keep letting its people down like this?

I was surprised at how large the museum is. It was excellent and well worth visiting. The museum’s permanent collection has over 42,000 works of art.

When I go to an art museum, I expect to see a fair amount of art in relationship to the museum's size. This museum had some art, but mostly it was blank walls. The space was terribly utilized. It was very expensive for what was there, and very disappointing. We finally felt our kids were old enough this year to appreciate art, this is one of the first art museums that we take them to, and it was almost empty. I have seen small-town (less than 10,000 people) museums with more artwork than this.

There was one exemption and one reason this is not a one-start review - they had a very good traveling display on Guillermo del Toro. However, it was not appropriate for the young.

The museum has a lot of potential but wait a year or 2 before going. It is undergoing major construction and the primary exhibits are closed, e.g., native American art and American western artist like Bierstadt. We were very disappointed. Despite closures the museum charged full entry fees. We complained and received a refund. The day we were there, water fountains were shut off, yet the museum website still said to bring no water to the museum. And they did NOT offer any free bottles of water. Only bottles, at $2 each could be purchased at the gift shop. We had heard from friends that the exhibits were really good, and were terribly disappointed. The one open exhibit, Impressionists, was very good, but small.

This is a nice museum. We happened upon a special exhibit about the making of the movie Pinocchio. Fascinating. They also had a nice Impressionist exhibt.

The building is lagre but only about half of it was oven when we visited. There was so little to see that the entrance fee should have been reduced. The Tickets are at the same rate as the really big art museums elsewhere in the US so to pay such an amount for so little felt like Boeing ripped off.
