- keen72762Vancouver, Canada273 contributionsMust seeHonestly I think I enjoyed seeing all the beautiful flowers rather than the animals though the animal exhibits were great. We had a great time at this zoo though. Yes you do have to walk a lot but bring water and bring snacks. We visited during Portland's heat wave.Visited July 2022Written 20 April 2023

It’s walkable from the centre of Portland and is beautifully laid out, and very well sign posted. The Rose Garden is just stunning; the Holocaust Memorial is so very moving and the Sacajawea Statue is beautiful. Well worth a visit.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 July 2023
- EllenChrOslo, Norway2,444 contributionsWonderful on a nice dayIf you visit Portland be sure to visit the park. We took the tram from the center and when we came up from the station there is a free shuttle that takes you all around the park so you can hop-on-hop-off wherever you want. As the park is pretty big this is a nice option. It’s also great just to walk if you are in shape. We walked back down to town which was fine. The rose garden is fantastic (and free), the different monuments are worth a look. We did not enter the Japanese garden (long queue and high price).Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2023

Highly recommended. Given the cost of the parking within Washington Park, I suggest either taking mass transit or parking outside of the park and walking inside.Visited August 2023Written 17 August 2023

Highlights include the Holocaust memorial which is extremely tasteful, the Japanese Gardens and the squirrels. Lots of paved walkways and a good spot for e-scooters.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023

This is a huge park overlooking the city of Portland. Roses are the main feature of this beautiful park. There is a fee for parking and signs warning of car break-ins. While there, we met a family who had all their luggage stolen. Remember to not leave anything visible inside of your car.

This is a huge park located in Portland. Accordingly, a lot of local people come here for a walk and exercise. Parking is metered but there are plenty of spaces. Bring your own water if you plan to walk a lot.

This is an amazing park with many different trails to choose from. We opted to Uber here as we had heard that parking was an issue. The information center staff were very helpful and friendly. Each trail has decent markings and the map we got from the info center was also helpful. A gem in the city for sure!

Beautiful gardens, well worth the time and having the timed ticket for the Japanese Garden allowed for space to see and enjoy the gardens.

We only visited the Rose Garden, as we came on a rainy day and the rain was soon to set in. The rose garden was absolutely beautiful! There was also a small gift shop with rose-themed drinks/snacks and memorabilia.
The rose garden provided lots of walking around, as the flowers were endless. We’re disappointed we didn’t get to see more of the park before the rain, but the rose garden alone with worth the visit.

How much time should i allocate for Washington park? For a no rush stroll through the Japanese garden..rose garden etc?

Give yourself a whole hour or more for the Japanese Garden. Walk slowly. Take it all in. It's supposed to be serene, and being on a timeline messes with that.
The park itself is huge, so maybe set at least a half day aside if you can hang with nature.

No specific bike trails, but there are plenty of bikers on the winding roads through the park. Check out the park map.

My kids and I will be in Portland for just an afternoon and evening, and I had the Japanese Garden on our agenda. Then found out it's actually located in Washington Park where several other places to see are located, too, like the children's museum, zoo, etc. Is everything located so far apart that we'd need to drive and park at the different locations, or do we park in one location and just walk to the locations we want to go?

P.S. The walk from the parking area to the top @ the Japanese Garden is steep. If your children are small-young or you have a stroller, suggest you use the shuttle, which is well scheduled.

I agree with Dan D. - it depends on your preferences. We enjoy staying in NW Portland in the Pearl District, because of the restaurants and accessibility to Washington Park. It's all so close you can hike then walk to lunch when you're done. We've been known to put on 10 miles without alot of effort. If you like the river, try staying by the waterfront. The Saturday market is always fun and there are loads of restaurants nearby. We usually stay at te Hilton as it's close to the river and shopping. If in the Pearl, we choose something that area. Transportation around the city is easy. No need for a car.

HI, is there any food available in the park? If so, where? Also, which areas such as the Rose Garden and Japanese require tickets/payment? Or is there an admission just to get into the park. I'm confused; not finding good information on the website. Thanks so much to anyone who can help.

I didn't pay anything but we just walked around. There are several indoor spots that may have food but I didn't go into them I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.
