We were running short on time to get to our destination, but the detour was so worth it! The hills were beautiful and the colors were unreal. I wish our reservations were for Mitchell so we could've stayed to sunset.

This National Monument is off the beaten path, but it delightful and worth the extra effort to get there. What is most interesting is that the colors change dramatically with a clear blue sky to a cloudy sky. From a high-noon summer to a later...More

We did not know this existed, but stopped by after a suggestion from a friend while traveling in Oregon. Spectacular and interesting geologic formations. We went in September and weather was perfect and mild, probably pretty hot in the summer. Start at the Thomas Condon...More

We spend the whole day driving around the 3 main attraction. Clarno is beautiful and the only place you can see fossil on the rocks. Painted Hills is a dream come true. We are amazed by the colors. So beautiful. The last stop there is...More

We spend several hours in this part of John Day Fossil Beds. We loved the views on the colourfull mountains. It is a bit off the beaten tracks and you have to drive the last part of the road on gravel but it is certainly...More

We visited both the Painted Hills and the Fossil Beds. The visitors Center is chock full of specimens and interactive displays. The colors of the hills are amazing. The Fossil Beds offer a chance to see scientists at work and the short film explains how...More

The visitor center was very neat. A lot of interesting fossils that have been found in the area. I had no idea that they would be found in Oregon.

We spent the whole day driving out of Bend to admire the fantastic scenery that has unraveled itself as we followed the John Day Fossil Beds, Sheep Rock and Painted Hills. We couldn’t believe the vastness of the landscape and the natural wonders that we...More

Oregon's John Day Fossil Beds Painted Hills unit is worth the drive off the main highway at any time of the year. The subtle range of colors in the rocks and sand - browns, yellows and light greens - is remarkable. In the summer and...More

We wish that it would have been cooler as we wanted to hike but it was way too hot for us. Visitors Center was average.

Mapquest says it's 4 hrs 15 mins, 215 miles from Portland to Mitchell, OR which is the closest city. Add about 10-15 miles & @20 mins to that to get to the Painted Hills Unit.
