It's an odd structure, a stone octagon in "German art nouveau" style.

    Great views of the river
The desk clerk at our hotel in Portland suggested Vista House when we mentioned we were headed to Multnomah Falls. It isn’t much to look at as far as a gift shop or anything, but it is a really cool building and the views of the Columbia River are great. Just beware, parking can fill up the later in the day it gets.

Stunning Views by This Iconic Columbia River Landmark
While Vista House could use some attention, it does provide a stunning place to view the Columbia River Gorge. The Vista House is staffed with volunteers that can provide helpful information about the area. It has a coffee shop and a ift shop. There are historical photos lining the walls though you can see water damage and the need for repairs. It is a beautifully designed building that Roadside America calls the Statue of Liberty of the West though it is more of a metaphor as greeting place from west like the SOL greets visitors in the east. Some would say it is mainly an expensive rest stop along the Columbia River highway. It does have accessible rest rooms, but it is the views that will keep you coming back.

Excellent stop on Columbia river gorge
Vista house is an iconic historic landmark dating back to 1930, so almost 100 y old. Built of stone it offers a panoramic terrace, great gift shop and small coffee shop, as well a kind of small museum with historic aerial photos over decades with explanations. Best to reach it is via a scenic Historic highway, though you can also do it via I-84. Much parking space in April, however I think it's difficult in summer season to find. Views of Columbia river with both, Washington and Oregon sides are naturally the main star here.

    What a View!!!
Situated high above the Columbia River Gorge on historic Hwy 30, the Crown Point View House offers gorgeous views of the gorge below. Opened in 1918 as a stunning rest stop and viewpoint along the new Hwy 30, it featured marble floors and stained glass windows. The octagonal building features stone carved panels with the names of settler families from the Oregon Trail. Do not miss this stunning stop at exit 22 on Hwy 84 and continue on Hwy 30 to visit the beautiful waterfalls that line the gorge. Your camera will be packed with gorgeous images!

    Amazing view
When we arrived it was already closed so I don't know what's inside. But this is a spot from where is amazing view at Columbia river Gorge. The Art Nouveau building is from 1917. There was a car park near by but you must be careful when crossing the road as you cannot see if coming cars or motorcycles if somebody is driving speedy.

Even during off season this place was very crowded. The roads up are windy and narrow- be very cautious of bikes traveling and sharing the road. The view is truly unbelievable and no picture can do it justice. The building itself is small and the gift shop is actually so small and difficult to maneuver if crowded. There are bathrooms and so much history to read on each of the 3 levels. The stair cases up and down are narrow and you may have to wait if it is crowded. The architecture and beauty of the Vista House is breath taking. There is plenty of parking but it is always busy and during peak season I could see this to be difficult. However, I highly recommend you go, you will not have any regrets.

We came here since we knew it was a historical place and it was a wonderful place to visit in the Columbia River Gorge. The views from the building were spectacular and that was true even since we visited during a time of wildfires and limited visibility. The shops and food available was also quite good and it was just such a nice little stop on our road trip. We would come here again any time we was in Hood River just for the views alone!

We had flown from GA to OR for a surprise birthday party for a friend. While at the party, someone recommended we visit the waterfalls along the historic Columbia River Hwy, a short distance from Portland. The waterfalls were spectacular but he didn't mention the Vista House, so when we came upon it, it was a nice surprise. We were very impressed with the building and view.

We visited the gift shop and I was pleasantly surprised to find many local crafts for sale, usually everything is made in foreign countries. I bought a beautiful metal woodpecker to hang on a post and a couple of other local offerings. There is also a Cafe with coffees, cold drinks and snacks.

It is definitely worth stopping at the Vista House.

This historical location was where we chose to start our Columbia River Gorge drive. The views all around go for Miles and miles. We arrived around 10:05 AM and the building was open and staffed with rangers eager to answer questions. (I believe it opened at 10AM the day we visited). Check hours as the site said closed for covid but it was open (maybe the first day open again when we visited?) also closes for high winds. The interior was very cool - the shape of the building, the dome and the windows… beautiful and fun to walk through and downstairs to the museum or up to the second floor for overlook views. Lots of history and information on the area and time when it was built.

A very interesting piece of architecture and history - the drive along the historic highway 30 is beautiful so go slow and savour each curve and vista point. Be sure to understand the history of Vista House before visiting and note the incredible details of the structure including the roof, rails and stairways. Building such a structure there in 1930 would have taken much planning and engineering. In particular note the gentle curve of the guardrails - the builders were very pleased with those. The interior has limited opening hours so check the website.

During our visit the inside of Vista House was closed due to covid, but we still considered a stop worthwhile. The parking lot was open and from the parking lot visitors have the most beautiful view of the Columbia river valley. Perfect place for pictures. The 'vista' that gave the structure its name is remarkable. Don't miss it.

I'm glad I stopped here. The octagonal building dates from 1918. It was built as an observatory and as a tourist stop along the Columbia River Gorge. The building was closed when I was there, but I enjoyed studying the architecture from the outside. Plus the views of the gorge are spectacular. Be careful of traffic as you move around the grounds.

We were visiting the Columbia River Gorge, camping in Troutdale. We came here first by car while on a long drive thru the gorge. The house was closed due to Covid but it sure looked interesting! The views from this vantage point are fantastic! So good in fact, I went for a bicycle ride from Troutdale again and rode to Vista House just to see it again. Lots of cyclists do that ride along the historic highway.

Use Sasquatch Shuttle’s parking lot and hop-on/hop-off service so you can relax and don’t have to fight for parking. This is one of their stops! I wouldn’t have known it existed if not for the shuttle. And I’m so glad we took advantage of the stop.
The views on a sunny day are spectacular and the historical building is pretty amazing!

This is one of the first stops on the western end of the Columbia River Gorge. It was built as such slightly over 100 years ago as a rest area. The view is amazing--but so is the building. It's Art Deco and really cool. There's an small coffee shop and small gift shop along with a small museum. There is a bit of climbing stairs required to see everything
