It's too bad the staff is inflexible when it comes to booking. We tried to make a same-day reservation in July, 2020, during coronavirus days, but they wouldn't allow groups to be combined so we couldn't take a tour. There were just two people on the tour that we wanted to join, and there were just two of us, but because we didn't know each other, we couldn't be on the same tour. We had our masks, we were ready, but try as we might, they wouldn't let us in. What a supreme disappointment. It's almost like they didn't want visitors.

Jaye was very knowledgeable, informative and entertaining. She is a retired teacher and it shows! The house was period authentic. It was decorated for Christmas and was not gaudy. Jaye not only shared about various furniture and accessories, but also the social climate and expectations of each generation who resided in the Castle. We’re glad we came.

Our tour guide, Jaye, was extremely knowledgeable about the era, the furnishings, the past occupants, and the history of Marietta. The tour gives you insight into the lives of the founders of this 1st settlement of the Northwest Territory. If you have the time highly recommend!

Touring old houses isn't on the top of the list when we travel, but some other key attractions weren't available during our weekday stay (the trolley was down for repairs; the toy and doll museum only open on weekends; the Ohio river museum closed for renovations) and this was very close after the riverboat ride so we did it. You do learn some interesting history of the town, and if you like architecture you will appreciate this attraction more. The staff were friendly; the introductory video was very helpful. Tours are usually on the hour, but it was a slow day and we didn't have to wait at all. There's no parking lot, but we had no problems finding street parking.

We visited the Castle for the normal tour and enjoyed it very much in the past. We've always wanted to visit during the Victoria Funeral weekend. This year we looked at the Castle website and saw it running for two weekends and decided to come into town for the second weekend. We live seven hours away, but we had a little family business that we wanted to attend to, so we picked that weekend. There were a couple of others that would have worked better for us, but we wanted to attend this event. We showed up expecting it to be running. The staff told us that the second weekend had been cancelled months before and that we shouldn't have looked at the chamber website for information. I told her that I hadn't and pulled out my cell phone and pulled up the Castle website and showed her what they had posted. She didn't offer an apology at all once she saw that the Castle website showed the event running that weekend. Two other groups arrived after we did expecting the event as well, and one had come from Minnesota. The guide had worked the Victorian Funeral event so they did a "modified" tour trying to cover some of the material from the Victorian event. It just didn't work. To add the final insult, they hand out a flier to all visitors with upcoming events, and it still listed the second weekend as the event as running. I sent an e-mail to the Castle management, and never got an answer, so I can only get the feeling that they really don't care about the customers. That's okay. Other establishments won't say no to my money.

If you enjoy history, culture, and architecture, this is a tour you will want to take. The old house(circa 1855) is beautiful and has a very interesting history. We loved the old furnishings, beautiful rooms, and period clothing. We also enjoyed hearing many of the stories of the various owners and their families. The tour takes a little over and hour and is preceded by a 10 minute introductory video shown in the old wagon house and stables. Tickets are purchased here...about $15(?). I would say that the only downside to the tour is (customary in many old home tours) that interior photography was prohibited. There were many exterior photo opportunities.

Some interesting info on the tour. The short video at the beginning was informative. And I will say the house is interesting and ecclectic. However, our young female docent was not very personable. No directions were given on what should not be touched, and I was admonished for touching a card. Another guest was told not to take pictures halfway through the tour not at the beginning. One guest in our group walked off halfway through the tour. They need to organize the timing of multiple tours as we waited in the kitchen for several minutes of awkward silence for another docent to finish in the location next to us. Out docent could not answer several questions from out group either.We visited several museums today, and this was not among our most enjoyable.

We thought we’d check out the castle in Marietta our first afternoon in town, and it was a major downer. Unless you’re from the area, there is nothing you can really relate to and the walkthrough is a guided tour that’s far too long at over an hour-and-a-half and the thing’s they point out to you are boring and dry to the point of tedium. Our first stop was the carriage house where you pay and then there’s a hasty walkthrough there that ends with you sitting on some wood bleacher seats for a twenty minute movie about the renovations and history of ownership of the property. I’d compare it to having root canal work done with rusty instruments. We then walked around the grounds and got some more history and then we went into the actual mansion, which is really no castle at all, and thus began the hour long walkthrough where they explain how the furniture was donated and some of the original furniture was reaquired. Honestly it was one of the most mind numbingly dull, and boring tours I’ve ever done! In the end I made a silly rat face at my brother and he burst out laughing and ran out of the house followed by me in tow laughing to tears. Horrible!

I had come to the Castle about 5 years ago with our Girl Scout troop on Halloween. I knew it would be a good place to take my family on a visit in Marietta. I recommend The Castle and then the Mound Cemetery which is a couple blocks north from the Castle. Entry to the Castle is in the little carriage house. They charge a modest fee for a private tour of the whole house! It's very interesting and the woman taking us through had a lot of information about the mid 19th century house and it's various owners from a potter's shed to a grand house. There are many artifacts unique and interesting on display inside too. Check out their events too. We went to a storytelling there once and they do teas and musical performances as well.

Step back in time as you learn about the history of "The Castle." Walk through the 'original' black iron gate and follow the little signs to the carriage house on the right. Start the tour at the carriage house where you are greeted by a smiling face. Here you can purchase your ticket for $7, browse a few items for sale, and snap a few photos. You will go into the actual carriage house where the horses used to live. A short 7 minute video provides a brief overview of the history of the home and its owners. From there, meet your tour guide to start the tour of the home. The home dates back to the late 1800s, but after being purchased in the 1970s by the Bosley brother & sister duo, renovations began to restore it back to the original Victorian era with some modern features so they may live there. Sadly, both died before all renovations were complete and they could live there. A non-profit took over and as a result, we have the opportunity to tour it! Inside you will find some great artifacts from the Victorian era and from the time period when the home was first occupied. The parlor area still hosts occasional parties and other events. For anyone who enjoys history, this is a must do. The tour is about 1 hour, but could go longer if you have questions or want to learn more. There are no set tour times, but they are more so based on availability. I called before hand so they were expecting me. Note: The last tour starts at 3:30pm, but I'd try to go earlier so you have more time since they close at 4pm. Photography is not allowed inside the home. Restrooms are available. There is no working elevator to allow wheelchair access up to the second floor.
