- Kevin S2 contributionsFirst-class museum for a miniscual admission fee! Native history, Revolutionary War history, Lots of artifactsWow! What an incredible museum! A Gunter's chain, a chunkey stone, a Conestoga wagon, and more than I had time to see! I stopped in Marietta on my way to the Cleveland area for the total eclipse and really regretted not being able to spend more time here. The Director of the museum was very helpful despite having her hands full cleaning up the Ohio River Museum after a major flood. I highly recommend a visit! The admission is only $3.00 and it's very convenient to restaraunts in town; not to mention the wonderfully rich history of the mound-building cultures in Marietta. I was so pleased to see an exhibit in the museum which featured early visitors' (1780's and on) reactions to the earthworks.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 April 2024
- Pat C178 contributionsOhio History Museum well worth visiting - Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, OhioThe multiple wings and floors of the museum include artifacts from the first settlement in Marietta to the 1970s. Be sure to include time for the guided tour of the Rufus Putman home. Everything was very well presented and interesting. If you are interested in Ohio history, visit the Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, Ohio.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2024
- Venture308535114081 contributionGood presentation of regional historyCampus Martius Museum is worth a visit. Displays are well-organized and has easy to read descriptions. Museum is spacious and you don't feel crowded. We were disappointed the Ohio River Museum was closed for remodeling. Marietta is a nice city to visit, but not during the Sternwheel Festival unless you like music. Great selection of restaurants and brew pubs in Marietta and across the river in Parkersburg, W.Va.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2024

This Museum was on our itinerary, but we were lucky enough to be able to have a tour of the Putnam house as well- the museum was built around the original structure which has not moved. It’s as authentic an original dwelling from ~1800 you will find (the windows being a notable exception). Excellent history of the area. Very informative.

After reading David McCollough's book The Pioneers, our family drove to Marietta to tour the museum that featured the home and relevant belongings of Rufus Putnam and Mannaseh Cutler. We enjoyed the museum's self guided tour, and the docent that guided us through the home of Rufus Putnam was excellent. I would definately reccomend this museum for those who love history and want to see real relevance as related to The Pioneers, by David McCullough.

This museum showcases not only the Marietta area but also several other areas of Ohio including people from Ohio. Many of the items are from the pioneer days of Ohio. Old long rifles, woodworking tools, old quilts, coal mining, an old Conestoga wagon, and many other items from earlier days. Several of stories of pioneers and what they contruibed to the area. They have plenty of chairs at several different locations on all three levels of the museum enabling seniors or handicap individuals to rest if needed. There is a small gift shop available.

We came to the museum because my ancestor Rufus Putnam's house and belongings are encased inside. But besides enjoying looking at his things, the museum itself provided an excellent history on the area from pre-historic times on. There are two floors to explore, although the second floor is just the balcony area, but there is Putnam's house, parts of the stockade, and outside is the 1700's era Ohio Company Land Office. Included in the price of admission is the Ohio River Museum. Anyone interested in local history should stop here. We were here for about two hours, but we like to read everything.

Just visited with my elderly parents and happily found the museum was easy to navigate since it has a long ramp to the front door and an elevator once inside. There are also chairs sprinkled around where you can take a break if you need to sit down. The exhibits were great (especially the Rufus Putnam house) and I highly recommend!

This is a great museum; we were extremely surprised that, on a weekday in the middle of tourist season, we were the only ones here. We got a personal tour of the Putnam house, inside the building, and the guide was very knowledgeable and didn't rush. Although all the exhibits are good, by far the most interesting for us was the bottom floor (where the restrooms are); it was entirely devoted to the migration from rural life to city life and also how many Appalachians moved from their homeland to the more "advanced" Ohio towns/cities. I love history, but have never encountered this before; it was utterly fascinating! The museum also gives a good overview of the very early days of Marietta. To make this experience even better, please add a short video; it would be very helpful for people just starting their visit to this lovely town.

My wife and I travelled to Marietta for the scenic drive between it and Woodsfield (beautiful, by the way), but were pleasantly surprised to find this museum. After spending several hours here, one should stop in Marietta for this museum alone!
The staff is welcoming and enthusiastically explain key exhibits. Admission cost is reasonable. We left much more knowledgeable about life on the American Frontier in the late 1780’s and fascinated by the history of Ohio and Appalachia in general. If you have the slightest bit of interest in US history, this place is a must-visit.

I had never heard of Marietta, Ohio before reading the book, The Pioneers by David McCullough. Marietta was the furthest west US settlement in 1786. Most people came here by riverboat but some by wagon. The book is fascinating, which means Marietta is also incredibly interesting. The best place to see the history is here at this museum. It is one of the best for American history. The first settler, Rufus Putman built a two story home and part of the museum is built over the original homestead with some of the original furnishings. If you visit Marietta, this museum should be one of your primary stops. Well worth your time. 3 floors of displays.

A pleasant surprise on our visit to Marietta, a city rich in history. Had not heard of this before until we checked Trip Advisor for things to do. Very impressive museum complete with the 1788 home of Gen Putnam, head of the Ohio Company, carefully preserved under roof of the building built in 1928. Our docent, Dave, did an excellent job of explaining the history on our private tour. Cost was $7 per person - reasonable.
