on all of my visits to whitstable in my lifetime, i'd never been lucky enough to visit when the tide was far out - until june this year. it was such a cool experience, definitely take a walk if you ever get the chance but be careful!

We were told about The Street by a local. Not sure how often the Street is uncovered by the rides, but worth a wander out for a look back at Whitstable and Tankerton.

Visit at low tide
Sep 2020 • Couples
To see the street you definitely have to be here at low tide. We managed to walk out quite a long way and half an hour so later the tide was almost covering the whole pebble bank. It’s an interesting phenomena. Great views from above as well.

When the tide is out, you must try it out!

A really cool strip of shingle pebbles and shells that goes into the water. Be careful and extra vigilant with incoming tide!

A unique & fascinating feature

Plan to take a stroll up this shingle 'spit' approaching low tide, preferrably a spring low, so early morning or evening, when it's far longer. But don't dwell too long at the tip!

A pleasant walk
Nov 2019
Extending about half a mile from Tankerton Beach into the Thames Estuary, The Street is a strip of shingle which is exposed at low tide. When the tide is low, it is possible to walk out into the Estuary, with the water on either side and, when you get to the end, to look back at the old-fashioned Tankerton Beach (ie no amusements or donkey rides, etc) with its wooden groynes. It is a pleasant stroll and, if you are a photographer, as The Street is north facing, there should be the opportunity of getting good shots at either sunrise or sunset. Possibly the best views of The Street, when you can appreciate just how far it stretches out into the Thames Estuary are looking down at it from the Tankerton Slopes

Lovely on a summer afternoon

Lovely on the terrace. This is a really nice place for lunch or just a coffee the menu is good and the food is a very good quality. We sat on the terrace where there is a good view of the garden where the children can play safely.

So Unusual
Sep 2019
I've been coming to Whitstable for many years and never noticed this phenomenon. If you are in the area well worth a look at low tide.

Interesting walk along the street, fun spotting shells in the sea
Aug 2019
We spent the morning sitting on the beach in front of the street waiting for low tide. It was amazing to watch the street slowly appear and quite impressive seeing just how far it goes! Walked along the street, quite painful walk with bare feet, i recommend getting some wet shoes for this as it will be wet but a lot of shingle and shells on the way. Enjoyed stopping by the sides to see all the different types of shells now clearly visible in low tide and even spotted some tiny fish!

An unusual walk
Aug 2019 • Couples
You need to time your visit if you want a walk on The Street, as it is only visible at low tide. It’s a spit of land that extends into the sea and it’s a quite unique experience walking along with the sea on both sides, as the spit gets narrower and narrower. It’s also nice to look back at the town for a different view of the sea front and beach huts. A really nice walk, if you time it right.
