About
Your visit to The Cedars may include touring both Hans Heysen’s studio – Australia’s oldest artist’s studio able to be viewed– and Nora Heysen’s studio, as well as the Heysen family home. Some 200 original works of art can be seen in changing displays in the studios and the house. All visitors are welcome to spend time in the charming garden that changes with the seasons, or to wander along the Artist’s Walk and discover some of Heysen’s favoured painting sites.

    A must place to visit
Well worth a visit but ensure you take the house tour. Has changing collections so worth while finding what is on display if you have particular preferance for their works. Staff were really knowlegable and keen to share. Now has a cafe which has only been open a couple of months so has a few teething issues. Our scones were cold and when warmed again were a bit crusty (might have used the oven rather than the microwave) Also a little skimpy on the jam and cream.
Thank you so much for your 5-star review, rosssL8634NJ. We agree that the house tour is a must! Our new café has also become a must-visit destination in its own right. We do apologise if the scones were a little crusty, but you are right, we do use the oven rather than the microwave. And, I hope you won't think it cheeky of me to say, (whilst we have passed on your message re jam and cream to our café manager) at The Cedars (unlike in Dickens) you can always ask for more! 😉 Do come and see us again soon!

The Cedars - wonderful history of early Australian history and art
Our Guide, Celeste was wonderful. Her knowledge of the Heysen family along with her local history knowledge combined with her own art background really brought this history to life. Would highly recommend this very personal tour and advise to enjoy the gourmet and innovative delights at the cafe.
Thank you for your warm words and 5-star review, anniemaree57! We are very fortunate to have an incredible cohort of volunteer guides and now a café in which you can linger longer! We look forward to seeing you at The Cedars again soon.

A wonderful tour. Well worth it.
We dropped in to see the property and then my husband decided it was not his cup of tea so I came back the following day for the 11 am tour. It was really good and a real introduction into the upper class/arty crowd of the era. The house is amazing and some of the family photos are very touching. I really enjoyed it. Love the history.
Hi Flickymicky, Thanks so much for your wonderful 5-star review. We're thrilled that you were able to come back the following day so that you would really soak up the stunning setting. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Warm regards, The Cedars Management Team

A delightful visit from start to finish. Recommend the tea and scones prior to a tour in the quirky tearoom. We felt so welcomed and the tea/scones were beautifully presented and so tasty. The teas, jams and other items are available for sale. The tour was well run, informative and respectful of the property’s history. The extensive gardens are well cared for and peaceful. Will set aside more time to explore the gardens on our next visit. The Cedars also has an active program of events outlined on their website. All up, congratulations to the hardworking and friendly volunteers who make The Cedars experience possible.
Hi Takeahat - Thank you for rating us 5-stars and taking the time to write your lovely review! This is review self guided ticket. You basically don't get much for 17 dollars. It wasn't worth the money. You can't access the main building with this ticket where all the actual painting are. Misleading and way overpriced.

Hi Townsvillemasterchef - we're very sorry to hear that you didn't feel like you got value for money. Our $17 self-guided ticket allows you access to many aspects of The Cedars including Nora Heysen's studio with current exhibition 'IN SERVICE: Nora Heysen - war artist', displaying original works of art created during Nora's time of service as Australia's first official female war artist, her original easel, smock, palette and other art materials, and ceramics that she used in her still-life artworks; Hans Heysen's studio (Australia's oldest original artist's studio open for viewing) - again filled with original artworks, art materials and easels; our authentic Artist's Garden - one of the rare original Artist's gardens designed by the artist himself, filled with plants featured in Hans and Nora's still life paintings and containing over 300 varieties of roses; the historic garage containing a Model A Ford and original camper trailer that Hans took on his many trips to the Flinders Ranges; the Artist's Walk under the towering gums on the broader bushland part of the property; our Cedars Café with delicious light meals, home-baked cakes made from Heysen recipes and locally-roasted coffee and Heysen tea, and our Cedars' giftshop. The only part of the property you didn't have access to was the Heysen home - which is only viewable on a guided tour by one of our trained volunteer guides – available to all our visitors for only $5 extra. However, our guides are very happy to answer questions and share stories with anyone who visits, even if they have chosen a self-guided tour! As we are a not-for-profit organisation, all ticket, cafe and merchandise sales go back into maintaining this beautiful property and its collections for all to enjoy. Perhaps you could view your ticket purchase as a contribution that helps preserve this extraordinary cultural legacy.

Post Easter, food was so, so stale it was inedible. Must have been prepared some time before Easter. Never had this experience anywhere else in the world.

As per our other reviews normally the feedback is exceptional, so we'd like to address this immediately. Warm regards, The Cedars Management Team

The Cedars offers several options to see the gardens but the tour is the only way to see the house. Do it as you will learn so much! We knew it was going to be fabulous when our tour guide asked if there were artists, historians, or partners being dragged along so she could customise her tour accordingly! Plenty of time throughout the tour to absorb the atmosphere and look at the beautiful paintings and artefacts, and you are welcome to continue to enjoy the grounds (and cafe!) afterwards. The tour really put everything into context for us, so we appreciated the grounds even more as a result.
The cafe is super friendly - highly recommend their refreshing juices as you sit back and watch wrens and other birds flit around. Highly recommend!

Hi RJ_Aust - thanks so much for taking the time to spread the word about your visit to The Cedars. Our guides love tailoring the tours to match our visitors ... its surprising though how many "partners being dragged along" end up falling in love with the place! We've even had an (initially) begrudging attendee end up volunteering with us, he was so taken with the tour he went on! It truly is our aim to have everyone who visits feel enriched by the experience, so we're very pleased to hear from another happy guest! Do come and visit us again soon.

Have visited the Cedars once before and loved it. But this time, the guide was so quiet And she jumped around way too much with personal snippets, we struggled to hear what she was saying when we were outside. The guide we had last time was full of energy and enthusiasm about the Heysen story, but sadly, this time around it was a different story. After 15 minutes I wanted to give up and leave it was so frustrating. Great story, great history but please better training and selection of guides. It cost $44 for two of us so I expect to hear what is being said and some enthusiasm is needed. I found it painful.

Hi jimhl1429KX We're very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit to The Cedars this time around. We aspire to have all our visitors leave feeling inspired and enriched and it appears you had the opposite experience - our sincere apologies for this. As you can see from many of our other reviews, we normally get exceptional feedback about our passionate guides who all undergo regular training. However, things can slip through the net so we appreciate you bringing this to our attention so that we can work out what went wrong and create the necessary changes so it doesn't happen again. We would be very grateful if you could email us at contactus@hansheysen.org.au to provide more details of when you visited so that we can work with the guide in question to improve and deliver what we absolutely agree is a great story and great history.

Firstly, you enter Heysen's built for purpose art studio, then the Arts and Crafts extended and fully furnished home that Heysen and his wife Stella and their eight children lived in, Nora's studio and work. All this was brought together by our very knowledgeable and passionate guide Stephan who was also very considerate of guests abilities to manage the paths and steps required. The garden was enhanced by Heysen and his children and was absolutely charming in the dappled light on the day we visited. I rate this tour extremely high and recommend it. A world class experience I was not expecting.
