Best Escape Room On The East Coast
This is by far the best escape room establishment on the East Coast. As part of a duo with one first-timer we were blown away by the ingenuity and care evidenced in the design of every puzzle. We both felt the narrative for “Redemption” was beyond fantastic and was rivaled only by the clear enthusiasm of both owners, Kim & Roger. We strongly recommend this escape room without hesitation or reservation and will certainly be back to experience “Under Pressure” and “Oz” when it opens. Thank you so much for such a uniquely enjoyable experience!

    Under Pressure Escape Room
What a fun time! We went as a family group of 5. Ages 7 - 64. We all had a great time. The staff that assisted us, Addison, was fun and engaging. Will definitely return the next time we are in the area!

    Best.Escape Room Experience Ever!!
This is a must do experience you will be amazed! We had so much fun. We were not able to finish the escape room, but it was such a wonderful time, we are already planning our second trip to get back into that room so we can conquer it! The staff are amazing people! We look forward to trying each room they create. There is great history behind the cool historical building you walk into as well. We were very impressed.

    Amazing mystery escape room!
We took the family to try this and it was amazing! The staff were friendly and helpful, and excited to be there. The room we did was great! It was called Redemption. Lots of clues and puzzles and a few red herring. There were layers of mystery and nice effects too. We had a great time even with 2 kids on crutches! I highly recommend The Key to Escape and can't wait to go back and try the other rooms!
Oh my… on crutches! You picked a tough room but so glad you did. It’s a great room but we will be putting our holiday room in that space soon. Come back soon!

There’s no place like… Key to Escape NC!
My family and I have done too many escape rooms to count, honestly I have lost track, however I will say every time I do a room at Key to Escape it becomes “the best room ever.” The Oz themed room has now taken the top spot! It’s such a great room. The puzzles are creative, they weren’t too difficult to solve so if you are a beginner I would say this room would be a good challenge for you. If you’re experienced you’re still going to love this room and it is still challenging. One challenge you may have is one we encountered; my husband and I said that at times we were sloppy with our puzzle solving because we were so enamored with the design of the room and just lost ourselves with looking at all of the details that at times we missed the obvious. 😂This room is purely magical. You know that feeling you got when you were a little kid and you went to Disney World for the first time and you rode on one of their classic dark rides and wished you could jump off and explore? It has that kind of vibe to it. This escape game is like jumping off the Disney ride and solving puzzles in the dark ride scenery! I don’t know if there are awards for escape room design, but if there are, this one deserves a gold medal. ❤️ 🌈 ❤️

We've heard wonderful things about Key to Escape and were excited to visit. For context, our group had players with a range of experience (from 10 to 200 escape games).

The positives: extremely friendly and engaging staff, beautiful historic space, some cool technology.

While we successfully escaped Nutty Holidays, we did not really enjoy the puzzles or game setting. I'll try to expand on the issues without giving anything away.

Many of the puzzles involved counting or finding numbers, which started to feel like busywork after a while. We encountered a lot of 4-digit codes and, because of the structure of the game, spent a lot of time calling out codes and trying them in the many possible locks. It felt like there was minimal cohesion and flow. A lot of the decorations seemed to come from a thrift store or Cricut machine, which distracted from the elegance and cleverness of some of the tech puzzles. Finally, there was a cacaphony of constant noise (holiday songs, jingle bells, sound effects, etc.). While some audio was important to the game, the overall amount of noise made it difficult to focus, communicate, and recognize when something happened.

Overall, we felt like some thoughtful edits would've elevated the experience and made for a more enjoyable game.

Thanks for your review. We do provide an immersive experience and that includes audio as well as an elaborate decor. Since images of our room are available online, it’s easy to see that our rooms are very immersive in this way and hardly thrift store quality. Regarding audio, as soon as my staff assessed your group had sensitivity to audio, we were able to turn off any sound effects that were not essential to the room but I do think it detracted from the experience. We had to turn off the ball drop countdown clock which is designed to keep you aware of your time remaining because a click was distracting. We never have a problem accommodating for special needs but it would have been helpful to have had you fill out the request when booking as there is a space for that. Sadly, all of our rooms involve this same fully immersive experience. All of our rooms have decor floor to ceiling. We love our tech but it is only part of our games. We don’t want guests to be in a boring room with only a few tech puzzles. That’s just not our style. But I respect our style could be distracting to some who need things less immersive. I’m sorry our style was not everything you would have liked. However, our rooms will continue to be designed in this elaborate manner. Again, for guests with any accommodation needs identified when booking, we can make changes in advance. This includes sensory integration problems; sensitivity to light, smell, sound or other effects. We have alternative timers we could have placed in the room. But making drastic changes in the moment of the room run is difficult and detracts from your experience as we can’t put alternatives in the room. Often, because of the coding involved, we simply can not change some things on the fly. So the question regarding special needs asked during booking is an essential question to answer for us to meet you specific needs in advance. We do use many techniques to help guests know a code goes to a certain place. Some of these include Cricut machine riddles or images. We find that enthusiast bias expecting the room to run like other rooms can cause people to overthink obvious connections. That’s why we say we are designed for all players... our best time in that room is from a group of people new to escape rooms that just caught on to things and communicated well. Thanks for the feedback. Our style just might not be a good match for you.

Key to Escape has a beautiful setting in a historic church, very clever and original, personally constructed rooms. You will be amazed. It is not the same old 100 padlocks to open. There are puzzles that are immersive and interactive that trigger your progress. There are even ways to get secret bonus items also so keep your eyes peeled! Pieces of an interesting storyline are revealed along the way. The hosts are top notch, friendly and inviting. There is a lot to discover so bring a team! This is an enjoyable experience for those that are familiar with escape rooms and are looking for something original and different. If you are new to escape rooms, this place will spoil you, because rooms like the ones at Key to Escape are few and far between. Go have a good time and good luck!

My girlfriend and I took her two boys, 10 and 13. We chose the Under Pressure experience. A story wrapped in local history and paired with "time travel". We had so much fun. Both boys got into the experience and had such a fun time they immediately began asking to return. We were unable to finish our "escape" but still had a lot of fun. We are going back to finally turn that sill off and stop the explosion. The owner talked with us and his excitement got us into a fun mood. The experience is immersive and I can see why this place should be on the top of everyone's list when they are looking for something fun to do. One of the funniest moments is when the 10 year old was tasked with making a phone call on a rotary phone. He stared at it and responded "How does this work?" You will love this place.

We were looking for something to do while school was out. I will say that we had a great time and the staff was amazing. Sierra walked us through the story and then set us on our way. The clues were interactive and made it even more fun. I highly recommend.
