- Patrick F1 contributionFrom Light houses to Life Saving Stations, it's all here on the Outer Banks.A must-see on your way to the Cape Hatteres Light house. An interagerl piece of history documenting the effort to save lives, just as important as the light houses. Thousands of historical artifacts from the Lyle Gun (Cannon) to breeches used to rescue seaman from clutches of death in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The original buildings, life boats and observation tower were outstanding, with views of both the Atlantic Ocean and Sound.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024
- Margie B253 contributionsMust visit this special piece of Hatters Island history! We have been coming to Hatterss Island for more than 30 years and I am so glad we finally visited this special museum and watched the enactment of their life saving drill. HThere is a cost ($10 or less per person) which goes toward the upkeep of the buildings. I had a 3 and 5 year olds that enjoyed watching the enactment and visiting the various buildings. It was fun showing my kids items similar to what I remember from grandparents house. The museum gift shop had items for all ages. Great to visit for souvenirs to take home. I will visit the gift shop each year for unique gifts and to support their project. Everyone working wanted to share the history. I enjoyed learning about the history of this area and these brave people. Tip: Go and visit on a day they reenact (this was on a Thursday for us).Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2024
- Wendy CSyracuse, New York8 contributionsTake time to learn about courage! From the time that we walked into the gift shop/ticket sales, the volunteer taking care of us was welcoming and conversational. She was extremely knowledgeable about the museum as well as the surrounding area. She was also inquisitive and asked questions to understand where we were from and helped us know how to pronounce some of the local towns and areas. From there, the museum was a self-guided tour including several out buildings, and there were very helpful signs and informational placards to explain what we were looking at. The museum was extremely well done, helping us understand just what the various men and women did 'back in the day' to rescue others who were in distress at sea. Amazing and courageous!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 August 2024

Excellent afternoon at this museum.... Thursday's at 2pm are the live reenactment which is a must see! So informative and everyone involved was very passionate about the history. On the day we were there, a high school group was also involved in the reenactment. We learnt so much about the history of the coast guard and also got to walk through several historic buildings on the ground. Our 11 year old son also found it very interesting....would definitely recommend for families with children/tweens!

What an amazing resource! My wife and I visited on 3/29/21 and thoroughly enjoyed the informative exhibits, especially the one about the Scottish drummer boy who was rescued from a shipwreck after using his drum as a life preserver. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. We hope this "museum" is available for years.

Great historical site with interesting information about the life saving service and the Coast Guard. Nice little museum with artifacts from the station and salvaged from shipwrecks. The guide was very informative and knew a lot about the history of many of the artifacts in the museum.

This place is almost in a desolate location in the Outer Banks. I really liked the buildings that were renovated to how they looked in the main time period when this station was in use. Its most famous rescue was the crew of the Mirlo, 42 of whom were rescued from a burning tanker which was torpedoed by the Germans in WWI. There are several movies to watch but they were a bit boring. I liked the buildings out back better.

We were pleasantly surprised by our visit to this museum. We are history buffs, and this was one of those visits, where you left wanting to learn more. The history of the life-saving stations prior to the establishment of the U.S. Coast Guard is remarkable. There is a brief video to watch for an overview of the station before you walk the grounds and through the individual buildings to see artifacts and experience what life was like for the men stationed here. It gives a great perspective of life on the Outer Banks and is a great tribute to the men who served here. If your visit is on a Thursday, you may be fortunate enough to watch a reenactment. We are grateful to the local folks who keep history alive by keeping this historic site open. The site includes a great gift shop.

If you’re visiting the OBX, put this on your list to stop at. Very informative guides and the artifacts were so neat to look through and learn more about how those brave men served their community. They even have the original surf boat used in the 1918 rescue. Very neat stop and so glad we went!

We have always wanted to stop here and never found time in our schedule. Finally, we made it, and what a great experience it was. The lady inside was really pumped about the history of this place. That is what makes a stop like this so exciting. She filled us in on some of the history and then let us watch an introductory film. It was very informative, too. There was so much to see just inside the museum. Absolutely great items and displays on the life-saving station and the process they used. In addition, there are several outbuildings on the property that were significant to the area. The actual Chicamacomico Station is on the premises. We spent a couple of hours here and enjoyed every minute of it.
