Fishing was outstanding and Owen knows what he is doing. Once we got our bait, it was 'game on'! Be sure you have some strength to reel these King Fish in, as they are really strong. Snapper was great too, and had an amazing meal that night. A bit rough on the water so the patch for sea sickness was a good idea if you are prone, like me. Saw some dolphins and watched fish (don't remember the kind) on top of the water in huge droves was cool to experience. Great views of the NZ coast as well. Thanks for the amazing experience we will remember for a lifetime.

Awesome character! My nephew came over from Australia and has been keen on catching a big king, this time of year we weren’t sure where to find them around home, so I made a booking with epic adventure charter. 10 out of 10
Skipper was friendly and knowable, and showed us exactly where to place our baits to hook up some big Kings, I can feel my muscles will be sore tomorrow but it was well worth it and to see my nephew catch his first king and many more afterwards was just epic! 😄

Skipper Chase took us to the mark & said "drop your bait down 50 meters and you'll be straight on". My bait got to the 50m mark and with in 10 seconds I was on to a 16kg kingfish. It was like that all day. I had to take rests as I couldn't keep doing that drop after drop - my muscles just couldn't take it. Chase didn't stop working all day between watching the sounder and baiting our hooks - yes he even baits the hooks for you. The day was EPIC! Thanks Chase I'll be back. Cheers Scott

Amazing day out as a birthday treat for my 12 year old son. Captain Chase got us onto lots of huge kingfish and did a really good job of helping the kids have a great day out. Thoroughly recommended.

First day a bust big wind bad weather we really wanted to fish thats on us.
Second day made it clear we did not want to fish unless weather improved and we could chase the big fish we wanted on the outside.
Owner Roy assured us we would be going outside but the skipper had other ideas.
Unfortunately it was all about money at the end of the day and not customer satisfaction.

Thank you very much jendavel for alerting us to your dis-satisfaction with the second day fishing with Epic. We fully appreciate both good and bad feedback and view negative feedback as an opportunity to improve our service. Whilst we aim to be a profitable company, our customer satisfaction is of the highest priority. Our process is to ensure the customer is fully informed about the impact of inclement weather, especially if it isn't severe enough to cancel the trip. Whilst I can and do make certain predictions regarding the type of fishing trip a customer may experience I do not advise the Captains where they will go to find fish. The Captain also has complete autonomy with all decisions regarding customer safety during the course of all Epic trips. I am very sorry your expectations were not met and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

Hired a whole boat for a full day and got zero kingfish. Hooked into one towards the end but lost it immediately due to gear malfunction. Back at the docks saw all three other charter operators were successful, how? Would have liked if someone told me that some days getting even one fish is a coin flip so it's worth sharing the boat over many days with strangers. What's painful was the lack of customer service when trying to fit in another day while we were still in Whitianga. If getting a donut is indeed such a rare experience, it should be worth trying to help the us fit in another day and maybe even offering it at cost when I already paid $1600, but maybe this happens more regularly than you might expect. I shared my story with some of the other smaller, local charters and some offered discounts and tried to move around bookings to fit us in because they value how people talk about their Whitianga experience and couldn't believe that a full day, whole boat booking in October could be fishless. If Epic are really about making an epic fishing trip come true then they'll get back to me and I'll happily change the review.

Hi again Stefan, thanks again for writing another review. I spoke to the Skipper and it is a real shame that you and wife didn't enjoy the day out with Epic, and a shame that she was violently ill all day with seasickness. Not a nice experience and I'm sure a return to shore was suggested. It wasn't too rough but we would normally not have gone out, but as you were from Australia we made the effort to get you on the water. As per your email to us, you noted that the skipper worked very hard all day to put you on the fish, tried lots of locations but sadly couldn't force a fish onto your line. This is one of the risks of fishing and what makes it's so exciting when a big one hits. It is indeed very rare to have a day where there is no kingfish caught, we run 3 boats out of Whitianga and in the years we have run the business I don't recall a boat coming in without landing one. Conversely, we are often approached by customers who have similar experiences elsewhere and we try and accommodate them as we are all proud of the amazing fishing that is on offer around Whitianga. I recall my business partner sent you an email once we learnt that you weren't happy and offered you a discounted trip on another boat which you declined as you were leaving the country. Unfortunately, we didn't have space on the following day charters for you. Thankfully they all came in loaded with smiles and photos of the great fish they caught. Hopefully, we get another chance in the future to get you out to experience how good the fishing really is off Whitianga. Until then all the best.

I booked with Epic from the UK to go out on Sanity from Whitianga on Sunday 19th Feb.
The boat takes four people in comfort and the trip leaves the wharf at 0700 returning at 1600.
The skipper Toby is great and can put you over fish time and time again. We were catching fish regularly even when nearby boats weren't. He uses his fish finder constantly, accurately and actively and will move away as soon as the fish move on. He will even tell you what depth to fish at using the coloured braid loaded on the reel.
He isnt frightened to use his petrol either as we went for miles and miles to get on the best spots.
He keeps a tight ship , seems a bit bossy at first about looking after his gear. But after getting into a decent kingfish you quickly realise that you could easily have the rod ripped out of your hands. The gear in your hands is of the very best, five hundred dollar reels for example, so you can understand why he is telling you to keep tight hold and with both hands.
He is a good laugh though, he justs wants you to have the best trip without having to flash your credit card for replacement expensive gear!

Take your iPod or iPhone and you can listen to your favourite tunes whilst you fish.
We caught Kingfish to about 10 to 15 Kgms regularly, everybody on the boat had about half a dozen each. Toby will only keep one if the angler is wanting it, so the rest go back to maintain stock, which is great to see.
After we had used up all the live bait , Toby put us onto snapper on and I think every one of us had one each.
Whitianga is a great place for awesome fishing.
The Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club is near the wharf and thy are very active and makes a great place to pop in for a beer.
I saw Striped Marlin being landed and weighed on the wharf during my spell there. We didn't get one but Sanity has had them.
The kingfish were enough for me , arms aching for days.
Fantastic trip, highly recommended, but book early as they do get fully booked up months in advance
Which says it all really.

The weather played ball and 30 minutes after leaving the wharf the live bait tanks were filled and off we went on Epic with Chase chasing kingfish.

We had four fishing on the boat, but the Senators have a heap of room and are comfortable riding so no problem!

After about 45 minutes we arrived at the spot and deployed our first livies - just two were allowed to fish at one time for this trip and as the fish were playing hard to get meant a lot of sitting around just watching - especially when we had to keep travelling (sometimes up to 30ninutes) for sign - but that’s fishing.

I wanted to try jigging (and had brought my own gear to do so) as the kings just weren’t hitting the lives but wasn’t given the opportunity despite asking to. We stuck to live baits all day with meagre results.

By the end of the day (7am till 4pm) we had caught at least one king each but I would have had a rod in my hand for less than a hour due to the two fisho rule and hard fishing - I have fished charters before were 4 can fish but as soon as one hooks up the others reel in their lines so no tangles. If I am brutally honest it was quite boring waiting for a turn and especially when your turn was spent on a barracuda, is quite frustrating.

Over all epic do run a good operation. I would recommend for beginner to intermediate level. Price wise for near $400 I didn’t do enough fishing for my liking but the end of the day a day out on the water is still awesome and the scenery along the coromandel coast was spectacular.

Would I choose Epic again ? Yes.

But I’d chose a different captain - I think Chase was feeling the pressure to find the fish and was hard to engage with him as a result. Luckily the three Aussie fishos were great fun.

Overall experience 6/10
