    Excellent museum
The museum hosts a very comprehensive range of exhibits spanning the countries history of military enagagements and does an excellent job of summarizing the broadstrokes of American military conflicts while also focusing on New York's role in such conflicts. One could dedicate an entire visit to a particular section of the museum with plenty more to return to see. There are helpful guides available to answer questions and admission is free.

    History site!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, great exhibitions that highlight military history in easily explained terms. Wonderful descriptions, displays and photos. Well worth the visit, even for non history buffs!

    I learned SO MUCH
Excellent museum of military history. Just the right amount of information. I loved the WWII exhibit and might return a different day to see other exhibits, if they've fixed the air conditioning. Man at the front desk says they were already fixing it yesterday, the day I visited. Would have given 5* if A/C had been working. Parking can be a challenge. Across the street from our favorite restaurant. Still free to enter.

Staff was great and helpful. A speaker was doing a wonderful presentation regarding the medal of honor. It's not a really big building but it manages to have a lot in it. And you can't beat the price. Free. Glad we visited.

We were traveling thru Saratoga Springs for September and interested in seeing the best of local history and attractions. Excited to come upon this site, as my husband/son are both former Army. Unfortunately, the visit didn't happen as they are mandating masking? Too bad. Won't be supporting this.

We checked this place out after visiting the USS Slater in Albany earlier in the day. It doesn’t take a lot of time to see everything, an hour or so, but there’s a lot of cool stuff here. They have a scavenger hunt for the kids to help keep them engaged and interested. Cost is zero so make a donation. Places like this are rare so keep them going by giving back.

This is the best exhibit of the arms and equipment used by the US military and their allies and adversaries. Highlighting New York State's contribution to the wars fought throughout American history, both in terms of supplying the troops and the manufacturing of weapons. I spent an hour but could have been there all day. As a New Yorker, I was touched go see just how important of a contribution our state has made to America's war efforts.

NYS Military Museum is a nice homage. It covers most wars & NY serviceman that served our Country & State well. There is also a 911 Memorial with photos of the New, USS New York (LPD-21), built with steel from the Twin Towers . Make sure you do not miss the WW 1 exhibit, Bunkers and all.

I'm not a military buff, but I visited the museum with my husband, a former marine. This museum isn't large - we were able to see most of the exhibits in about an hour - but it features artifacts and descriptions of every major military conflict from the war of independence at least through WWII. What I liked best was the focus on the local connections to these conflicts, especially during the revolutionary war, since upstate New York was the site of so much of the action. This is a free museum, and totally worth a visit.

The museum has exhibits starting with the early days of the revolution to the lasst days of WW 11. A tour starts with the Revolution working to the War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, War with Spain ending with World Wars 1 & 11. Exhibits include weapons, uniforms, medical & dental kits & a number of cannons. The Civil War has the largest exhibit. Here is information about Prisoners & Prisons, Battle Flags, large selection of rifles, carbines, revolves, swords & scabbands and early photography.

The wall are filled with countless words & photos on each era. If a visitor reads every word, they could easily spend two hours. Photography is permitted, however NO FLASH. A flash can damage the uniforms. All staff members are very friendly & helpful.

If a visitor has a relative that served in the N.Y.S. military of any era or the N.Y. National Guard, the museum can check the state's archives for the relative's record.

NO admission, however donations are appreciated.
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday. 10:00 to 4:00.

NOTE: The museum's parking is limited to street only, NO parking lot. Two blocks WEST on High Rock Avenue is a large FREE public lot. About a 7-8 minute walk to the museum.

A visit is recommended.

My 8.5 yo son and I came here one day in February.I had researched things to do with my son and this place was on my list.I was so glad we made it here!It happened to be RIGHT behind our hotel,Hampton Inn by Hilton Downtown,so it was extremely convenient to get to.It was steps from the hotels side entrance. It is filled with artifacts and information.
It is all on one floor (ground floor)and they have very tastefully packed a lot into a small space. This is not a mom and pop museum, but very much has a feel of a very experienced larger museum.Very well done.
We were warmly greeted by two gentleman at the front desk ,who I believe are volunteers.I think we were told the museum is run by volunteers (!).We were given a little run down and informed that each war area (Revolutionary,Civil, WW1,WW2)had a Look and Find sheet for children/kids.If you completed them you "won a prize".My son generally does like or do these type of games but for some reason he decided to.I was so glad tbat he did because it really made him slow down and look at thing's.We even kept going back if we missed something on his sheet .It made him read labels and I think it helped him get a lot more out of the museum then if he chose not to do them.He did all 4 and was given a nice museum magnet which he proudly put right on our fridge when we got home.
There is also a small but filled gift shop.Used books, new books, jewelry, models to build, toys, posters,t shirts, all military related. We left with an airplane model to build,1 used book and postcard for 19$.
This museum can ,unfortunately be overlooked and I'm not exactly sure why.
The location is great,a 5 min walk from the main street in town, near pubs ,restaurants and hotels. It is big museum quality on a small scale. But that's perfect when you just have an hour to spare.(a real history buff, who doesn't have young children in tow could easily spend 2 hours here, lots of info to read).
I wish I had cash to put in the donation box because the museum is FREE.It's got something for the kid's and adults.
I highly recommend!

It is in the old armory and has an extensive collection of NYS military history. The price is right. Great place to go on a Tuesday.
