My 8-year granddaughter came to me with a request for our next family vacation. She loved doing pony rides where the horse walked around a corral in a circle. But after watching the cartoon series “Spirit” asked if she could ride a horse on a real trail on our next family vacation. This year's family vacation was going to be a week in the Berkshires. So, I searched online for a place that would allow an 8-year-old to ride a pony on a trail. I found a few places that offer the usual pony rides for young kids and others that offered trail rides but only for children 10 years and older. But I did find one stable that offered trail rides for children 8 years and older – that was Rocke N Horse ranch.
At the time I first contacted Rocke n Horse their stable was located in East Otis in the Berkshires, but by the time we arrived in the Berkshires they had moved to East Greenbush, NY about 45 mins away. I spoke with Wendy, the owner, a very pleasant lady who gave me the details and I made arrangements for a group trail ride. Wendy has three horses available for rides – Whiskey, Carly and Red. All full- sized horses, no ponies. There was also Scruffy (Wendy’s little white farm dog) who walks the trail with the horses. My granddaughter enjoyed petting and brushing Scruffy when she wasn’t riding on her horse.
Normally Wendy does trail rides with no more than 2 riders since she usually rides her horse on the trail with them. But when one of the riders is a child, she walks the trail holding onto the lead of their horse to insure they are comfortable and safe during the trip. So, she can accept three riders when one is a child. I talked my two daughters (my granddaughter’s mom and aunt) into riding the trail with her. They had never ridden a full-size horse on a trail either.
My wife and I drove them to the ranch and meet with Wendy and took pictures as they dressed in riding helmets and mounted their horses. Since the ranch was very rustic and did not have a public lounge for visitors to hang out and wait, we drove back to a Dunkin Donuts about 10 mins away for the hour and returned when they were finished.
The trail ride was a fun experience for the three of them. Rocke n Horse made my granddaughter’s wish come true – to ride a horse like in the show “Spirit”. My granddaughter rode Red and had no problems at all riding her with little instruction and sometimes without Wendy having to hold her lead the whole time. In fact, Wendy coaxed the other two horses with the inexperienced grownups more than she did my granddaughter’s horse. Before we drove off to Dunkin Donuts, Wendy had asked that we stop near the red barn on the property and wait a while to be sure our granddaughter did not panic once the trail ride began and had to be taken off. But the call we got was that all was fine and to go eat donuts and iced coffee for 45 mins and come back.
Wendy is very patient with new inexperienced riders. On a hot day we appreciate her walking the 3 miles along side the horses for this trip. She charges $50 for a one-hour basic ride on a trail near the stables for inexperience riders of age 8 and above and who weigh less than 230 lbs. Price of $60 for an intermediate trail ride for the more experienced rider.
Rocke N Horse is just one of many horse stables and farms in this farm complex. The farm complex itself is easy to get to and there is a gravel driveway next to a big horse corral by Burdenlake Road. But once inside you drive a maze of dirt and gravel roads through the complex to Rocke n Horse. Once you pull onto the dirt driveway you follow the arrows on the fences - mostly left turns - and you will pass a large red barn to a narrow dirt road up a hill to Rocke n Horse stables. We had stopped and parked our car at another horse farm at a big red barn on our way in - thinking we had arrived at Rocke N Horse. While there, we saw a chicken coop, a house cat and met the horses belonging to another stable. Wendy directed us by cell phone the rest of the way. In fact, it is best to call Wendy upon arrival at the main entrance to the farm complex and let her talk you through the drive to her exact location.
