Unexpectedly awesome

We did a slack pack trip through the cedar berg. The last leg of which included a donkey cart ride. We were allocated a colourful driver who owned six trusty steeds which he cajoled and encouraged over a narrow precipitous mountain pass with great gusto, two whips and consummate skill.

Donkey Cart hike in Cedarberg
Aug 2015 • Friends
This unique experience of hiking through the remote and amazingly beautiful Cedarberg with donkey carts porting your luggage. You can get onto the cart and ride along at any time if you're tired of hiking. You stay in community houses or a community lodge and the food is prepared by the local people. Wonderful!

Authentic and off the beaten track

Park your car at an empty parking lot in the middle of the national park. Walk about 10 minutes down along the trail to find 6 donkeys happily grazing all around. It takes the young man about 20 minutes the get all the donkeys in 3 neat rows in front of the cart. You get onto the seat with the miniature pillow and hold on. On your 2 hour journey, you get lost in a world where time has stood still and every step the donkeys take is one further from civilization as we know it. After many whips and commands from the very competent guide, you disembark, kiss the ground and are welcomed to this tiny self-sustaining village. On of the children of the Moravian Church of Wupperthal. You stay in a very neat backpackers with a maximum of 10 guests and enjoy a home-made meal at candle light. You are free to wander around the village and locals are friendly but shy. Escape electricity and noise and the world as you know it. Get a glimpse into a world where everyone works for the greater good of the community and where values and family bonds is the glue that holds it all together
