Kruisrivier Oasis

What a gem. An oasis in a most unlikely location. A most scenic gravel road from Calitzdorp, 30 km out and you'll find Kruisrivier Gallery. But much more than that; great cappuccino and delicious fresh home made food. And biscotti to die for. Fir adventure motorbikers it will make a great stop before heading for the Swartberg Pass.

We had a fabulous stroll along farm roads to find the gallery and were surprised to find a feast for the senses in this little oasis in the middle of nowhere! Photographs are exceptional, felted items and baskets an interesting and beautiful addition, coffee delicious and the lovely Phyllis full of interesting stories. This is definitely worth a visit - even if you have to travel far to get there.

Had a lovely meander around this little gallery as well as a coffee and chat with Roger who was very hospitable. He’s an extremely talented artist with very emotive photographs being exhibited. Thanks Roger! We hope to be back again.

A gem in the outback

You have got to visit this gallery.

The photographs are amazing, especially the ones of the weddings that Roger has done in the area. They are so filled with humerous drama depicting the cultures of the area and the write ups are equally impressive. I don't think I have stifled laughter so vigourously for decades. The compositions are awesome. I could not believe that Roger has not yet published his work, decades of brilliance means a future best~seller.

The food we were offered was delicious, when I say delicious, I mean mouthwatering. Do yourself a treat, have a look at this place, and experience firsthand the work of these brilliant people. They also have accommodation at a very reasonable price. I will certainly return. Hi

We were told about Roger Young by Grant Burton of The Retreat at Groenfontein where we were staying. We set off the next morning and arrived at Roger’s gallery just as ESKOM made themselves known! But it was just as Roger had finished making us a fine cup of coffee!
Rogers photography is super amazing! You need to see his work. I found his shots of people deeply moving. He is talented at scenic shots as well, however, I found his people portraits to be his forte. Especially his wedding portraits! He has some lekker snacks and good honest coffee and one can walk around or sit outside and be enchanted by the beauty that surrounds him. Roger also sports a room that one can rent which we looked at and thought it was very charming.

The menu while limited was tasty The coffee was excellent. The hosts are very gracious. The black and white photographs and other artwork on display are of the highest caliber and I will definitely be back to purchase a photograph for my entrance hall

Make the detour

Off the main tar R.62, in the centre of Calitzdorp make the drive on the Kruisrivier gravel road to Roger Young's studio. Not only is this road through the valleys stunning but you will be greeted by a photographer at the absolute top of his game. That Roger Young also makes furniture is testament to an artist worthy of the highest acclaim but what is more, one who is engaging, welcoming and will have time for you. An absolute gentleman. What we found most moving were the captions written by Roger of deeply moving stories connecting the photographs to real life events. Unmissable.

The art works are truly fascinating and beautiful. Friendly people and amazing sceneries. They also serve light meals for lunch at fairly reasonable prices.

Truly Wonderful

Photographs of incredible beauty and emotion. The photographs exhibited for sale would themselves make an excursion to a major art museum worthwhile. He is very friendly and too humble, not a surprise given the gorgeous and relatively remote place in which he has chosen to settle. The whole loop road is full of beauty and interest, but don’t fail to spend some time here.
