Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have been there now the last two years for The Gathering which every collie lover and reader of the late author Albert Payson Terhune knows about. The park named after the author is the former grounds of where he and his wife bred collies. Being an author Terhune wrote about Lad, one of his first collies he had at Sunnybank which was the nae of his home. Lad took off back in the 1919s an Terhune kept writing about them and began showing them. The Gathering is in honor of Terhune and a celebration of the breed he loved so well. Many of the collies he wrote about are buried there and you can see the graves and headstones. the grounds and headstones have been lovingly maintained by The Terhune Sunnybank Memorial Park members. From the grounds you can see Pompton lakes and there are plenty of places to sit and have a wonderful picnic lunch. I plan to go again. The Gathering has been going on for over 20 years! May it continue for 20 more!!!!

My husband and I try to go to the annual "The Gathering" when we can. Every 3rd weekend in August, collie lovers come from all over the world for an even at Sunnybank to celebrate Albert Payson Terhune's beloved breed, the collie. The park is so peaceful and plenty of shady spots for a picnic. Though sadly, the house no longer stands, one can visit the gravesite of many of the collies featured in his books. And to attend The Gathering, there is so much to see and do, educational lectures on collies, and shows for the virtues of the collie - And every bit of money raised goes towards the Collie Health Foundation, researching ways to keep our beloved pets happy and healthy. And collies! Lots and lots of collies of all ages!

My first trip to Sunnybank, the former home of Albert Payson Terhune and his collies was amazing. I arrived at sunset then came back the next morning pre-dawn. After a glorious sunrise, I explored the park in quiet solitude, only the birds and the woodland creatures sang their accompaniments. To see the graves of the great collies, including Lad, Wolf, Bruce, Fair Ellen, Sigardson, Treve, Jean was a moving experience. One could almost feet the presence of the collies. Then the park came to life with hundreds of collies and their owners attending The Gathering sponsored by the Collie Health Club (third weekend in August). This is an amazing experience not to be missed. A small park preserves the area where ATP's home and collie kennels once were located. One can see the fire blue lake - Pompton Lake and dream of what was. If I could give this six stars, I would.

Sunnybank overlooks Pompton Lake at the edge of the Ramapo Valley. It is a 9.6 acre tract. Albert Payson Terhune and his wife Anice Stockton Terhune (1874-1964) lived here, and devoted much of their life to collies. Statues of collies abound, and there are many dog walkers here -- mind the footing.
Great oak trees, beautiful views of the lake and many birds -- we counted 24 swans this April.
Sunnybank is owned and maintained by the Wayne Township Department of Parks and Recreation.
Wisteria and woodbine surrounded the old Victorian mansion; weeping willows from Virginia grace the lakeshore.
Peaceful and comforting -- but mind the footing.

We love this park. It is very serene here. We came here with our beautiful Cassie who passed away last month. I have been wanting to go back and just sitting on the bench where we would sit with her at our feet but it is still too painful to go back without her yet. If you have a four legged loved one that you want a place to go that is not crowded and peaceful, this is the place to go.

This park was the site of author Albert Payson Terhune's home and becomes a mecca for collie enthusiasts the third weekend in August. Terhune wrote many books, among them "Lad,a Dog." His collies are also buried on the property. Tucked off Rt. 202, it is a lovely, quiet place.

Once a year Albert Payson Terhune fans and Collie lovers come from all over the globe to celebrate his writings and the beloved Collie Breed. The third weekend in August becomes a weekend you'll never forget set at the beautiful park on the lake. All proceeds go to charity.

I love Terhune Park! If you go when there aren't other people you can almost feel the ghostly characters around you, a very happy state of affairs! There's the Master in his puttees and heavy coat surrounded by a swirl of golden collies frolicking on the lawn. There's the Mistress, always in a white dress, pouring tea on the veranda in summer and next to the fireplace in winter. There's Robert French supervising the kennels. there's Lad, Wolf, Fair Ellen the blind collie, King Coal and the rest of the well loved, famous Terhune collies. It's a magical place and you can almost recreate the glory days of Sunnybank if you have a bit of imagination.

The Terhune Memorial Park is a dedication to Lad, Wolf, Fair Ellen, King Coal, Bruce and other collies. Memorial statues and plaques can be viewed celebrating the collie's of Sunny Bank and the subjects of 30 books written about the collies. The books included "Lad a Dog" and the "Further Adventures of Lad". The Terhune Collection of books and collie dog awards are located at the Van-Ripper-Hopper Historic Museum about 4 miles from the Memorial but also in Wayne. Aside from the many memorials on the property there are picnic facilities with tables and charcoal grills, fishing access but only emergency boat launches on Pompton Lake. Today it is a cultural center for art shows, Collie competitions in August, fairs and other activities. Originally the land was part of the Arent Schuyler crown grant of 1695. The Van Cortlandt Regiment used the encampment of Sunny Bank in the winter of 177-1778, The land was turned over to Wayne Township by Albert and Anice Terhune/

This small park is devoted to a man who was devoted to collies, and people who love collies continue to visit on a regular basis
But so do other people who love dogs, lots of dogs, so watch your footing with care.
But you don't need a dog to visit this restful and beautiful spot. The lake is invariably a magnet for beauty and for many many birds
If you're in the neighborhood as I was a few days ago, stop by and enjoy one of the most peaceful places in New Jersey.

There is an excellent parking lot at the end of the road going into the park. At least 50 spots if not more.
