The Dey Mansion, a mid-eighteenth century Georgian house was built by the descendants of an old New Amsterdam (Manhattan) Dutch family whose 1672 farm is the location of today's Dey Street in lower Manhattan. Unlike many historical houses visitors at the Dey Mansion are permitted to view the 2nd floor rooms in addition to the ground floor. Gen. George Washington stayed at the mansion in 1780 hosted by Col. Theunis Dey. There are some original Dey family items among the period furniture and a beautiful visitors center and restored garden.

This fine old Dutchman's house, built by Dirk Dey (pronounced "die"), was Washington's Headquarters for several weeks of 1780 during the Revolutionary War. He conferred here with Lafayette, who was stationed in another house (still standing) about a mile down Valley Road, off Preakness Avenue At the summit of Packanack Mountain up French Hill Road, troops watched for the British. When the much-needed restorations are complete, you can again tour the house, which is owned and operated by Passaic County. Events such as battle reenactments and colonial cooking demonstrations are held by various groups during the year.

Documents that attest to General George Washington having used Dey Mansion as his headquarters can be found in the Library of Congress. There are 364 letters and orders totaling 594 pages that were written at the mansion., by and on behalf of Washington to army officers and the continental Congress. Washington stayed at the mansion from Saturday, July 1 until Saturday July 29, 1780., at that time he left to greet the French allies in Newport, Rhode Island returning to Dey Mansion Sunday, October 8 and staying till Monday, November 27, 1780. He then left for Morristown, Others who came to the mansion include: Alexander Hamilton, Nathanael Greene, Anthony Wayne, Henry Know and the Marquis de Lafayette. The Mansion is on both the New Jersey and National Register of Historical Places.. The mansion can be toured Wed-Fri from 1pm till 4 pm. Sat and Sun from 12 pm until 4 pm. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors and (3-17 yrs.) $3. Your admission cost gets you a professional pamphlet, a copy of a letter Alexander Hamilton sent to Elizabeth Schuyler, July 6, 1780 and a letter sent by George Washington. The tour starts in the kitchen and encompasses about 12 roped off rooms. Washington's bedroom and office are showcased. Original paint colors, some floor boards and a handful of original pieces belonging to the Georgian style home can be found. The window glass is a reproduction of glass from the period complete with waves and bubbles. Other artifacts while not original to the house are from the middle to later half of the 1700's. There are many interesting paintings as well from the 1800's.The gardens were designed by the Olmstead Brothers of Central Park fame. Parking is free and an adjacent visitor center has just begun construction. Mainly for history enthusiasts this site has historical interest made richer by the narrative afforded by the docents..They have reenactments and a decorated Christmas Mansion tour.

Nicely restored historical headquarters of George Washington. You can just feel the history as you go through the building. Guide was friendly and informative.

This is an example of the places where George Washington stayed as he moved about the region with his army. In fact, despite the fame of Valley Forge or the history of the revolution in Boston, much of the war was fought in NJ from Trenton to Bergen County. This home is an excellent place to learn what his visits must have been like for a family that hosted him.

And the reason he moved often is that he could only stay as long as there was food for his horses and men.

They give a house tour and on weekends have living history re-enactors. I give is a 2 thumbs up.

I brought 4 kids ages 7-14 with me and upon arrival we had to stay in the visitor's center building as there was a lecture event in the actual mansion. There were complimentary refreshments there to keep everyone occupied as well as exhibits to look at. Nicole, the resident archeologist kept everyone entertained with 18th century era toys and great insights into the history of the area.

When it was finally our turn for the tour Nicole did a great job painting the picture of what it was like for General george Washington and his men as well as his friends and hosts, the Dey family.

Would definitely recommend and hope to come back when there is a war reenactment.

This summer, the county hosted a saturday craft for kids at the dey mansion, and it was a huge success with my son! The young ladies who were in charge of putting it together showed my three year old all the art that was in nature and he couldn't wait to go every week! I hope they continue this next year!

for me this place is a perfect example of a simple way to step back into the past. See how colonial people lived and a chance to visit the headquarters of G Washington for a short time. Take the tour for a nominal charge and hear about the troops living arrangement in the attic!
