I did use the wand and did not mind taking it back to the ticket building. One reason for returning wands to the ticket counter is they need to keep any deposit IDs safe behind the counter. ( As I recall, I was not asked for an ID, which surprised me.) The above suggestion that it helps the Gift Shop is probably true and another good reason for asking people to return the wands to the ticket building.
