It’s amazing to see such a beautiful church in a remote place. This is the kind of church you would find in a metropolitan city: ornate, intricate wooden carvings throughout, beautiful stained glass windows. There is a free museum down around the back with history and artifacts. If you like churches, check it out!

This is an active Catholic church with masses on Sunday. Even if you can't make Mass, be sure to tour the museum. It's beautiful, fascinating, and you'll see pictures and artifacts of long ago Virginia City.

This is the big historic church in town. You really can't miss it as it is so much larger than other buildings and stands alone. Maybe take a tour?

...on my spontaneous excursion to Virginia City from Carson City yesterday. I had just ran across this church on Google Maps and chose it to be my last stop on my way back to California. I started my day off heading to Lake Tahoe and was thinking I would get to see Carson City and possibly Reno as well. I got some good hikes (walks) in by the lake and the State Capitol Building as well even though my knee is giving me some problems. I decided to take the half-hour drive out here from Carson City instead of just passing by some by crusty old hotels and casinos in Reno. When I got here, I didn't know that Virginia City was some kind of tourist mecca for the Old West - sort of like Tombstone in Arizona is. All kinds of old Western-style stores and shops and restaurants with lots of families and couples walking around including quite a few in Western dress. Maybe I didn't take a walk in the town because as usual I am alone and don't fit in. And what would I do with a souvenir if I bought one. There's really nobody to get one too. Anyway, this amazing cathedral-like church is somewhat oddly here not exactly fitting in as well with the rest of the town. It's a beautiful, old structure with a top-notch small museum filled with interesting and amazing little artifacts and realia located on its bottom floor. I decided to check out the museum first. A very sweet, older lady inside was overly helpful basically following me around the half hour or so I was there - pretty much struggling to explain all the different items we were looking at. It was actually quite cute and charming. She did tell me an interesting story and pointed out some pictures about the Cistercian monks from France I think it was who came here in the 50's. It's kind of a funny story, they came and started rebuilding the church, but actually tore it up instead, and the townspeople didn't like them and made them leave after a few years. Another cool thing I thought was the murals (frescos?) they have painted in a couple of the rooms. Anyway, a very nice visit in the museum. The church itself upstairs was a little harder to get in as they were having a wedding rehearsal and were closed. I waited about 15 minutes till it was over and did spend a few moments inside. Very pretty place but not really overly ornate. Talked to another lady up there. Now she was in charge - every fiber in her body let you know that she was the gatekeeper - still kind of friendly though she was ready to leave and wanted to close. I don't know, more than the church itself, I liked being around the older ladies in the church today.

St. Mary in the Mountains church was our first stop on our visit to Virginia city. Came in for prayer and reflection and to admire the beautiful architecture. On our way out purchased books and cards from the gift shop at very reasonable prices. Loved it.

Walking into the church your breath is taken away by the beautiful stained glass and carved wood. Oldest church in Nevada! A must see!

This is the old historic church in this small western town. You can't miss it as the spire is so tall and is especially visible from the main street. Worth a quick visit.

Other than being a beautiful church, I am interested in the services offered, Is Mass said on Sundays? I will be visiting the general area and would like to attend Mass on Sunday the 17th if there are times of Masses available to the general public. Thank you.
