My family (including 10 year old kiddo) had a wonderful time exploring Yellowstone with Carl a few weeks ago. We booked our day with him while the park was still in the process of reopening after the flooding, and he was very flexible about traveling all the way to the West gate to meet up with us (once the North gate opened to tour operators, we mutually agreed to meet up at Norris Geyser Basin instead). His vehicle was clean and comfortable, and well stocked with drinks and snacks.

As we started driving we chatted, and found out that Carl used to be a smoke jumper, and had worked in anti-poaching enforcement in Africa and the US. His passion for wildlife and the preservation of the park were really evident. Seeing him interact with the park staff and other guides, it was clear that they liked and respected him and were all happy to share their own wildlife sightings with our group.

Within a few minutes of meeting up Carl pulled off into a small lot and found us a wolf with his scope! Tons of other tour vehicles went right past us in a rush to get to Hayden Valley or Tower Road - we were immediately impressed by Carl's "eye for wildlife." Throughout the day he consistently picked out great vantage points for us, near the action but away from crowds. We did mostly wildlife viewing, except for quick stops at Tower Falls the Artist Point to see the Lower Falls. We never felt rushed along, and he patiently readjusted scopes to get the best views of the animals and scenery.

Our family - 3 "children & 10 GRANDs" has been to Yellowstone multiple times (lucky us!!) and eat of the last 3 times we enjoyed the visit to a significant degree because of Carl and his Yellowstone knowlwdsge and experience. We have been there with GRANDs ranging from 4 to 16 and each time Carl did something special for and with the GRANDs. Last time he took the 3 youngest (14, 12 and 8) on a 45 minute walk through Bison trails ... with older GRANs on an earlier trip he insured that they had an "ice cream stop" and many minutes watching Old Faithfull "explode"!! We went in January one year and what a tremendous visit ... Carl had us all over yellowstone - it was spectacular (yes - COLD) ... but the bison traveling through waist high snow was a sight never to be forgotten. Terrific work/guiding by Carl EVERY time.

We were a family of 7 that decided to book a wildlife tour with Carl. We experienced most of the pros and cons of Carl that are mentioned in other reviews. Our group definitely saw a wide variety if animals and learned a lot, but we all felt like Carl was a grump. He did spent time with other guides when we stopped. He did capture images and videos through the spotting scope and air drop to us. He shared a lot about himself, but never asked us about ourselves. He never even asked our names. He had a negative opinion about things, including other tour guides. Our group was definitely put off by his negativity. The lunch he provided was a huge disappointment. I was expecting deli sandwiches, but it was homemade sandwiches on grain bread, with Tupperware containers of lettuce, cheese, and tomato slices. The only drinks provided were mixes of instant coffe, hot chocolate, and Hot cider. He provided the hot water. The food and drinks were only made available about 30 minutes before the end of an 8 hour tour. I think that there are other tour guides as knowledge as Carl, with better customer focus. I would not recommend Carl.

Carl is a true expert on the wildlife, ecosystems, and history of the area. We had a full day of unexpected sightings and nature documentary worthy moments. Animals don't preform like a Disney World ride, but Carl knows the heartbeat of this land and can put you in the right place and time to see much of it. We saw Gray Wolves (including an adult bringing food back to a rendezvous point and having eight cubs explode out of the undergrowth, wagging tails and begging for a portion), Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Coyote, Long-tailed Weasel, Mountain Goat, a couple groups of Pronghorn, and hundreds of Bison. If there's a chance to see something, Carl will make sure you do. Highest recommendation.

I've seen another review that says Carl is a jerk. I selected the Safari because Carl has 28 years of Yellowstone experience and guaranteed the sighting of wolves. To deal with lots of folks - we treated him with respect and he treated us with respect.

We saw several wolves, black bears, grizzly bears, elk, and bison. Most were about a mile away and needed a spotting scope but the view was excellent. He even saved video and air dropped it to my iphone. Awesome souvenir.

We have a four-year-old who was understandably tired on the one mile hike uphill to the grand prismatic spring overlook, Carl gladly picked him up and sprinted up the hill! He was a very good with my 4 year old. Carl was even better with my 15 year old daughter, who did some pouting but really enjoyed listening to his story is.

If you want a wildlife expert to lead your Safari, book with Safari yellowstone. If you want a college student that was trained for a week, book somewhere else. We spent 3 days with Carl and wree completely worn out at the end but loved it!

Our tour guide was Carl. Carl is an experienced, well-traveled, and very knowledgeable guide. Carl is also a jerk. Carl is NOT kid-friendly. If you have children I would suggest a different company. Carl also needs to mind his tone when speaking with guests. At one point he got upset because my company, consisting of children, had their face masks off. Carl aggressively demanded we put our masks on, but Carl was not wearing his own mask most of the trip. I don't know if we were on the safari for our benefit or for Carl's, as he spent a lot of time speaking with his "colleagues". Carl's vehicle is an old van with 4x4. Realistically, if you have an SUV or a pickup truck you can do a little research and do the whole tour in your own vehicle, at your own convenience, and save a ton of money. Objectively, this tour was a waste of time on our trip.

My family had an amazing and educational trip with Carl today during our full day private Wildlife tour of Yellowstone. Carl is incredibly knowledgeable regarding Yellowstone’s history as well as knowing great spots to see wildlife. He even made it entertaining for our 5 year old daughter. We were able to see wolves, elk, pronghorn, coyote, grizzly bear, mountain goat, and of course bison! I highly recommend Safari Yellowstone as you will have a guide who truly loves what he does and takes the time to educate. There were many other guide companies out today but Carl was clearly the best. Thanks Carl for the wonderful day!

My family and I went on a tour while vacationing in MT. There were 8 of us including a 1.5year old. Carl was amazing. He gave such detailed information about every landscape and animal we came across. He was extremely knowledgeable and made our experience one to remember. He delivered on all our requests to see certain animals: wolves, bears, sheep/goat and of course bison. He really exceeded my expectations and we wouldn't hesitate to do this again!! 10/10 hands down!!

My husband and I just returned from Yellowstone where we booked two days of private tours with Carl of Safari Yellowstone. As someone that guides ecotours for a living, I appreciated Carl's knowledge and passion. He picked us up at our hotel and located all the big-ticket animals for us - wolves, bison, elk, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, coyotes, mountain goats, moose, and a fox! During our days in the park, we saw several other similarly named tour operators with large groups pulled over at the side of the road, filing in and out of their vehicles throughout the day. It made me glad we booked a private experience so that we could set our own itinerary, stop when and where we wanted to, and also had hot beverages, breakfast pastries, and a nice deli spread for lunch. If you want a big tour bus with several other families and a guide that reads from a script, then this trip isn't for you. If, however, you want to get the most out of the park with someone that actually knows their stuff, book with Safari Yellowstone!

Carl is the best. He knows everything about wildlife and we saw awesome animals (and even shared them on his phone with ours). We had signed up with Yellowstone Guidelines initially who cancelled on us the day prior and Carl came to the rescue on his day off to help us out. This is a fabulous tour and competitively price.
