Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful campground on the reservoir. SO CRAMPED AND CLOSE! Your fire pits and picnic tables are within feet of your neighbor’s. Might as well have a group fire! We were put in a handicapped spot (we are not handicapped and we have a 20’ trailer) next to a trashed out Shasta trailer which was all boarded up with plywood…including the door…and parked more toward the middle into our space. AND there were other spots available! Why??? We just figured the trailer was being stored there it was so old and unusable. But at 11:30pm the owners came home slamming doors, dog barked…like they were IN our trailer! Why would the camp host allow this? Worse night of a 2 week trip!

The campground was not what we were expecting. There are two sites on asphalt next to each other; a small break and two more, etc. All sites are on the lake. They have electric/no water. They also have no showers. You can fill your tank when you come in but there was no sign about that as you entered the campground so we never did. We were here 4 nights and survived just fine, but it's not a place we'd go back to. We weren't crazy about the sites or the setup.

I'm sorry to say that this park was a huge disappointment. We arrived anticipating trees and semi private spaces, like most national parks. The sites are side by side with no separation, and not many trees. There was no feeling like being in a national park at all. Proximity to the lake would, I suppose make it good for people with kids, or those fishing. For people who are thinking that this park will give them a sense of being 'in nature', perhaps consider finding another location.

We camped on the lake for four days and never ran out of things to do. The swimming, fishing and boating was great. The Lookout Trail hike was a good hike to run the dogs and get a great scenic view of the Missouri River and Hauser Lake. Campers can rent boat slips for $5 day. The campsites were nice UNLESS you were on the sites next to the boatslips. These sites shared tables and fire rings. They are still ok, just be sure to choose an odd numbered site so that the table and fire ring is convenient to your rv or trailer door. Ours was an even number (16), and it was fine - we just put our grill on a table we brought. The view of the lake was tranquil and lovely. The dam was about a mile up the road and there are trails there as well. The bathrooms were very clean (flush toilets). The tent area also had a clean pit toilet convenient to their site. The trailer sites had electricity, with water nearby. The camp host has an adapter for the spigot that you can borrow to run a hose to your trailer. The dump station also has fresh water.

We were camped next door at White Sandy and with temps in 90’s and no shade just couldn’t deal with the heat. They had an opening at Black Sandy. $15 well spent. Electricity and on the water=cool! Very helpful staff. Nice clean flush toilets and beautiful views. Yes sites are a bit close but it was fine.

Black Sandy State Park is for boating on the lake. The lake is beautiful! What a great fun to be in the lake.
However, there are picnic tables and people stay there st the lake and at the mountains.
I liked the mountains that surrounded us and the beautiful lake.
Worthwhile to see!

Black Sandy is located about 15 miles from Helena, to the North in Lewis and Clark County. It is located along Lake Hauser which was formed by the Hauser Dam. It is more or less an area for camping with camp site after camp sight, but the lake is beautiful and a great spot for boating and fishing. There really are no concessions for food or water, so we walked a bit and moved on.

It's a nice lake, frequented by people with their own boats. I didn't see any services there: no food, water or boat rentals. And it was *HOT*.

I love this Park. It is truly beautiful. A great place to enjoy Montana. It is clean and well kept. You can get right down to the water and dangle your feet if you want.
