About
Located in Helena's Great Northern Town Center, this world-class, hand-carved work of art consists of 37 animals carved by a renowned Walt Disney World carver and 14 Helena scenic-carved rounding boards and stained glass artwork. In fact, the National Carousel Association said it is the finest carousel in the nation, if not one of the finest in the world.

The Great Norther Carousel is more than just a place. It becomes a piece of some of your favorite memories while living in the Helena area. My daughter asked to have her 9th birthday party here over all the other choices she had available. Some of her third grade friends and a lot of family came along. All the kids had a blast. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful the entire time. This is the third time she has had a birthday party there. I am so glad they are open again. Support your local business so it stays that way. 10/10 A+

I am 31 and my boyfriend is 29. We visited the carousel on our first day in Helena. The carved animals were beatiful. The craft that must have gone into creating them is hard to imagine. The carousel itself is an impressive sight. We purchased a ride for $1.50 which is incredibly cheap. (My boyfriend noted that a carousel in his home town is $5 per ride). As the gate opened about nine pre school aged children attending a boy's third brithday rushed to select their animal of choice for the ride, and so did we. After strapping on his "seatbelt" my boyfriend said to me sheepishly "we are the only grown ups riding". I truly can't imagine why. This activity is geared towards children but is also fun for adults, I would recomend this for a date activity. In fact we enjoyed it so much, we made an unscheduled second trip to the carousel the next day.

We also visited the "Exploration Works" museum/center next to the carousel. This is truly more of a children'sactivity. We each paid $8 each for admission which we were happy to do as support for the place. However once we entered we soon realized that it wasn't an activity that translated well into anything that could be enjoyed by adults. There were a few exhibits that were interesting but for the most part, I think this would be ideal for children. If you have children don't miss the carousel and science exploration center.

Lots of different animals to ride from Buffalo, river otters, bears, wolves, and of course beautiful horses. Fun atmosphere and the ice cream is great - good place for kid parties.

We have loved the carousel for years with our kids, and now, it's our grandkids that we take there - ages 2 and 4. The youngest is nervous but wants to ride, so we have always been able to secure her in the horse and stand with her on the ride. Within the last month, they have changed their policy so if an adult wants to safeguard by standing with their child, you have to pay as well as the child. This is total nonsense! They should appreciate the fact that adults are being extra careful with the little ones.

Thank you for your review and please know that we appreciate your business. In order to cover rising maintenance and the upkeep of our carousel, we have had to make some hard decisions, one of them being to charge adults accompanying young children. We are only asking adults to pay $1.00, once the day of your visit, no matter how many times the children ride that day. Other carousels charge adults for every ride and they are community owned, we however, are a privately owned small business trying to cover costs of operation. We are sorry that you feel this is poor business practice, but it is one a the hard decisions we had to make.

A must do when we come to Helena for sure, grandkids love the carousel. Ice cream shop to enjoy after ride. Outside there is lots of hands on things for kids to enjoy and climb on.

We were exploring around Helena after our train tour and decided to use the "free" coupon for a carousel ride. It was fun, a unique carousel with the carved animals being specific to MT. And the ice cream afterward was good too.

If you have a favorite Montana animal, you may be able to ride it at the Great Northern Carousel! My nieces who are now in high school and college still like to ride their favorite animals when they come to visit, choosing the same ones as they did when they were small. Besides some beautiful horses, there is a pronghorn, grizzly, frog, big horn sheep, mountain goat, wolf, bison, trout, and my favorite the otter (because you ride on the belly with otter looking up at you). If there is a birthday party taking place it is crowded and loud, otherwise plenty of choices to ride. Watch and grab for the gold ring and get a free ride. Ice cream is ok with about 15 flavors to choose from. A little pricey for everything, single scoops for 8 and 12 ride tickets was over 30.00, so be prepared.

This is not an historical carousel although it does have carved animals and jaunty music. This would be a fun place to take kids for a ride and an ice cream. Many of the animals are carved to look like animals indigenous to Montana.
